I just went through the member list and manually stripped the avatars off of user accounts that were corrupted, missing, or not showing in thumbnails.
These avatars were having a negative impact on the site design, especially the broken ones, which were causing spacing issues.
If your avatar got removed, you will need to re-upload it.
