Dublinthefox
We may have won the war on video game censorship, but that doesn't mean the medium won't be in need of protection against unjust attacks. Case and point, Oklahoma State Representative William Fourkiller is currently proposing a new bill, which if passed, will place a 1% tax on all video games sold in the state that have been deemed "violent." Oh, but before you begin calling out the bills pure what-the-f**kery, it gets even stupider. The bills definition of a "violent video game" is incredibly loose. How loose? Well, any game with a Teen, Mature, or Adults Only rating will automatically fall into the "violent games" category, regardless of content or context. In other words, games like Super Smash Bros. or hell, even an out of place game likeWii Fitwill be deemed "violent" by default. Because, you know, bopping Pickachu upside the noggin and burning away helpless fat cells will turn the sweet innocent kiddies of Oklahoma into heartless, violent serial killers. Sigh. Mr. Fourkiller, could please just stop this bill before you wind up embarrassing yourself further in an inevitable legal "slobber knocker" with the Entertainment Software Association? CrypticQuery
Good god, the definition of "violent video game" gets broader and broader each time some idiot that doesn't understand what he is doing proposes a new bill like this. Here's hoping someone actually has common sense and strikes this down; either that or the ESA gets wind of the plan. :P
Vy'drach
I 'member when young children could play Turok 2, DOOM, Duke Nukem and what not and the majority of people wouldn't bat an eye, so long as it was explained that these are games, and thus not real and that decapitation is not something you do on a normal basis. Harmony Descent
...........Speechless. I am just purely speechless about how f***ing stupid that is.... Hell, if they consider Teen games "violent," might as well consider E+10 "violent" since there's games that have this "violence." (Hence, Shadow the Hedgehog, which I didn't find that violent) I clearly don't see anything worth the point in this bill. Can someone dry-clean my eyeballs and show me where this bill is "right?" Psygonis
also lol at the guy whose last name is "Fourkiller" trying to pass a law against violence The exact same thought at the moment I began reading the original post! Well, old debate, as old as its carriers, and as senselessly driven now as when it began I'm afraid. Is it election time in a state where family protection associations represent an active lobby? Vy'drach
also lol at the guy whose last name is "Fourkiller" trying to pass a law against violence Also, given the nature of surnames and their origins, it's quite possible one of his ancestors was quite the violent person. Irony enhanced.
