Underrated Video Games

The title of the topic says it all: what are some video games that you think are absolutely fantastic yet everybody seems to hate? Well, maybe it's not always the greatest game, but those certain games that are in no way as bad as everybody else makes them out to be.

I guess I'll go ahead and name a few:

Obviously, the Star Fox games on GameCube

The Kane & Lynch series

Reservoir Dogs

Duke Nukem: Forever

Resident Evil: Outbreak (which is my all-time favorite RE to date)

So, how about you guys?

Psychonauts. This gem somehow managed to slip under the radar for a lot of people. It was brilliant.

If you hadn't mentioned it, I was going to.

Didn't peg you for a Kain fan there, Xort.

Anyway, not counting Legacy of Kain, Body Harvest is one. It more or less started the open world shooter games, and was done by Rockstar before they were called that.

Also, Phantom Crash. It's a mostly single-player mech game (has split screen for vs.), where you build your own mech from the ground up, with a myriad of customization options, and battle them in arenas against other mechs in a free-for-all battle. There is a lot more to it than that, but that requires going into the customization options and all that further. One fun thing about it is that it was one of those SP games that seemed like an MMO due to the amount of random characters and chatter that would go on. My favourite mech game to date.

My memories of the series are kind of a haze of craziness spread out over a week with Milky and his batshit-crazy friend from Chicago, full of giant pyramids made of soda cans and copious amounts of awesome hats, but what I do recall of the series was damned impressive. Great voice acting, for one, really stood out. I've been meaning to play through the series again sometime, but doing so isn't all that easy when you don't even have a PS2 or anywhere to play one :/

Indeed. If you have access to a PS3, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver are on the PS store.

If not, PS2s are rather dirt cheap, last I saw.

And yes, the Legacy of Kain voice acting is unbeatable. Story was damned fine, too.

One thing I loved about Kain, is that in no point during the games does he lie. He'll tell half-truths and use other deceptions, but does not actually lie.

Mischief Makers for the N64. I would be overjoyed if a sequal ever came out.

I actually have "shake shake" as the text tone for my phone. :3

Thanks for reminding me, Space Dynamics, and by the way, Mischief Makers is an awesome game.

Anyway, my next contribution to the discussion is a little game on the Sega Saturn called Guardian Heroes which is made by the same people who did Mischief Makers. I wouldn't go so far to call it underrated as much as it is overlooked, but I figure I'd bring it up. Unfortunately it's a rare game and commends outrageous prices (my friend bought his copy for $90, which he said was the cheapest he could find at the time), but check it out whenever you get a chance to.

This. While not the greatest game out there, its a fun as hell little Diablo-esque bundle of fun when played with friends.

Also this. Most people unfortunatly dont know about it, and frankly i dont know why, given how well the story's presented and just how massive the scale of everything makes me scratch my head a little bit as to why so few people have heard of it. dunno tho. 'sposedly Relic is working on the 3rd installment.

Split/Second - PS3, 360

Oh, that is a gem right there. Too many people have never heard of it. It is one of the best racing games I have ever played. Never gets old. :)

Driver: San Francisco - PS3, 360, PC

Although the Wii version is a completely different game from the PS3, 360, and PC versions, think it is the most underrated of the group. It is actually closer to both Driver 1 and 2 on PS1, and I definitely enjoy that. :)

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.

Very odd, semi-kid friendly FPS, where you use small animals as ammo, while you play a Clint Eastwood themed bounty hunter who is out to take the bandits out. Was released on Steam and PS3 in HD though. I recommend it.

Tail Concerto for the psx, . . .

Tail Concerto is such a nice game. The one thing I will never forget is those times you accidentally side-jump off a cliff.

I agree with Vydrach on Stranger's Wrath, I had that game for the original XBOX. Some other underrated games were Blazing Angels 2 for the XBOX 360, Super Mario Strikers for the GameCube, and Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict for the XBOX.
