Mario and Sonic are two of the most famous rivals in the gaming universe. From games like Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Galaxy, and Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic and the Black Knight, these two characters show their own coolness in their own games. From transformations like Fire Mario to Invincible Mario, and Super Sonic to Excalibur Sonic, these two powerhouses show they have what it takes to fight stronger opponents or face great evil.

Mario first appeared (in his own game, not counting Donkey Kong) in Super Mario Bros., and the sales of the game suddenly skyrocketed and Mario's fame continuous to grow until this very day. Nintendo then proceeded to make more Mario series of games which also became just as successful as the original platforming title, mainly the Mario Kart and the Mario Party series, which brings pure fun and enjoyment to players. Mario's platforming fame eventually led to games like Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Mario also starred in his own sports titles, like Mario Super Sluggers and Mario Power Tennis.

Sonic first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog, and the blue blur made himself famous enough to be Mario's greatest gaming (although friendly) rival. Sonic then appeared in his own great titles like Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, ad Sonic Rush. Sega then proceeded to make more creative titles like Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight. And since Sonic's trademark is his speed, he has his own racing titles (Sonic Riders series.) All of Sonic's games incorporate his trademark almost-reaching-lightspeed speed, and this makes his games more action-packed and thrilling.

Of course, Mario and Sonic have their own distinctive transformations. Whilst Mario's transformations are varied and each has its own useful purpose, like the Tanooki suit or the Blue Shell (the only ones with time limit being Invincible, Rainbow, and Mega Mario), Sonic's transformations (or at least almost all of them) have super strength, improved super speed and almost invincibility, they are hindered by either the ring count or health (excluding the Werehog transformation, as it gives super strength yet removes Sonic's trademark speed in turn of stretching arms, and it expires when the sun goes up.)

(Come to think of it, who will win if Invincible Mario (starman) and Super Sonic (7 chaos emeralds) fight?)

Sonic and Mario have also appeared in crossover games where they both appear (only 1 series and 1 game so far, actually.)

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter games

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Mario & Sonic at the 2012 London Olympic Games

So, which character do you prefer? Sonic or Mario, and why? (As an optional bonus, which game of theirs is your favorite? [includes crossovers])

NOTE: THE TOPIC IS TITLED MARIO OR SONIC, NOT MARIO VS SONIC, SO THIS IS A POLL ABOUT WHO YOU PREFER, NOT WHO YOU THINK IS BETTER. Just thought I'd make that clear.

fox......

Haha, I remember when we had a topic like this, and Wes/FoXXX did the exact same thing. :P

Out of the two, I'd have to choose Sonic. Sonic actually moves quickly, therefore doing what his title promises. When was the last time you ever saw Mario fixing pipes or plumbing anything?

Excellent OP, Geo!

I'm firmly in the Mario camp, even if I'm not rabidly enthusiastic about the plumber's games in general. Compared to how Sonic has been doing though, Mario is like video game Jesus, and before it's mentioned, yes, I realize that Sonic Colours was pretty good and Generations looks to be quite alright as well. While keeping this in mind there is a reason that the 'Sonic cycle' is a well documented phenomenon and that's pretty much because Sonic team had a run of what, five years worth of Sonic games that were absolute garbage. I'm glad to see them getting their stuff together but at this point Sonic is just too much of a tainted franchise for me to support, for reasons beyond those I have already mentioned.

I've been a fan of Sonic since Sonic The Hedgehog 1 on Sega Genesis. I've pretty much played all of the Genesis Sonic games. I have Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, both on Dreamcast and Gamecube. Funny thing is, I bought my dreamcast just to have Sonic Adventure 1 + 2. Those are the only two games I actually have for that system. I haven't played any of the Wii Sonic games, but I did play Generations and I probably will buy it when it comes down in price.

They're the only two videogame characters who managed to brand their companies' name.

When Sonic was designed, it was decided they wanted to completely contrast the then-existing Mario; make Sonic appeal to those rebellious kids.

I vote Falco

For me I think Mario's the best of the two. Why? Mainly because he managed to survive the test of time and can appeal many players regardless the age of the game and the player.

Mario. Sonic's pretty much been a joke since SA2.

Honestly, I think their rivalry today is a joke altogether.

...Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games is not a rivalry, it's a franchise crossover(possible) fangasm.

Anyway, I vote Mario.

KING HARKINIAN!!

But in all seriousness, Mario wins hand down for the overall series, but Sonic wins as far as character goes.

So, I guess I'll vote for Sonic, but I love 'em both.

If you're referring to games, I would choose Sonic. If in an actual fight, Sonic.

I've always been a huge Sonic Fan, but that's not why I'm picking him.

There is a video that I've seen where these 2 guys compare everything about them and send them to a battle.

Let's see if I can find it....

Out of the games I myself prefer Mario. His games like Bros. 3, the entire Kart series, New! Super Mario Bros. (both DS and Wii), Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, his sports games, entire Mario Party series, and most recently 3D Land, were very great games. So far, (at least, for me), Sonic's great games were only few, namely: Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure (both on DS), Sonic Generations, Sonic Unleashed, and some of his games on GENESIS, namely the Adventure series. Mario clearly is more famous in terms of games.

If based on character I would prefer Sonic. Mario's personality has always been varied for all the games. He doesn't speak much, and Nintendo, on purpose, made Mario's personality undeveloped so he would fit in various game genres and roles. Meanwhile the Blue Blur has developed an overall good personality. He has made many friends along the way and his cheerful personality and him being a true friend, along with his other excellent traits, made him a good character that made him practically be able to be friends with almost anyone he meets.

So, yeah, I like both. They are both good in their own ways. Mario in his game variety and Sonic for his action-packed and fast-paced games. Mario for his colorful yet unclear personality and Sonic for his, well, overall personality.

In the end, Sonic gets my vote.... At least, he crossed the finish line first anyway :troll:

I personally don't feel like I have found a decent Mario game since Mario 64. Sonic since that point had a few keepers like Sonic Adventure Battle 1 and 2. While they have had some games that bombed a bit I feel like they at least tried to change it up a little and the latest Sonic game that was released (can't remember the name at the moment) sounds like it has promise of reviving the franchise. The idea of playing another Mario game just feels a little stale imo, especially after I realized Nintendo just kind of monopolized on selling the same game over and over without really changing way too much.

So I guess to make it brief, for a dependably decent game that I can turn to and ensure that I will have some fun: Mario.

If I want to find a game that wants to try being a little different: Sonic.

I vote Falco

Aww...I was hoping for a second it was an option....

Sonic.

I grew up with the character and the characters surrounding him. My first game was Sonic 2, and I have fond memories of the AoStH cartoon as a kid. I've played nearly every game in the brand, I have collectable toys, t-shirts, and even bought the book. I have intimate knowledge of most of the continuities, and can name and draw just about any character of the game's cast.

It's a sickness how much I love Sonic, but I was part of the ideal audience. He's lighthearted and punky, can befriend anyone, and is forgiving. He's a warm, positive, wholesome character.

As for the games, I even played and found enjoyment during the "dark times," when Sega seemingly forgot what made Sonic so appealing in the first place. The last few years, though, have been great game after another, so it's a delight for us fans.

As for Mario... I could never get into the games. At least the main games. The platforming formula that makes Mario what it is go right over my head, but I love those side games. The sporty games, the party games, Mario Kart! I love those! But I'm usually running about as Peach. Heck, I even main Peach in SSB games she's available.
