The iOS Jailbreak Thread

Ground rules: Do not name any repositories/sources that contain copyrighted software, and do not discuss how to get copyrighted software onto a cracked iDevice. Also, I personally don't reccomend jailbreaking unless you have technical know-how or have an older device. The newer iPods and iPhones work just fine.

Alright, so, recently I jailbroke (jailbreaked?) my iPod. My reasoning: Apple never fails to impress with it's rapid out-dating of products. I bought my 2nd Generation iPod about 2 years ago, and now am missing out on features like multitasking and homescreen background because Apple doesn't let 2nd Gen iPods like mine update past software 4.2.1, which was alright but lacked the greatness of the newer versions.

A few days ago, I decided to crack my iPod, see what it would be capable of if it weren't for that meddling Apple. I used greenp0ison, and with just a few clicks and several painstakingly long reboot times, I had my freshly jailbroken iPod.

Now, what is the purpose of this thread? Share sources, packages, or jailbreaking softwares. Ask for advice relating to your jailbreak. Show yours off.

I'll start by recommending a few base Cydia packages that I've found to be useful. Keep in mind, though, I'm pretty new at this, considering I performed the jailbreak only a few days ago.

-Winterboard

-MxTube

-xCon (For fixing issues where an App Store app won't run because it detects a jailbreak)

-Terminal

-Activator

-Cydelete (helpful for getting rid of cydia apps)

-Covert

-Features (Extension for Winterboard, allows for multitasking, battery meter, homescreen background, etc. on 2G and 3G devices)

Steve jailbroke his 2nd gen touch, too. o: I thought about jailbreaking my iPhone, but then came to teh same conclusion you did: there's nothing wrong with the way my iPhone works now, lol.

Yeah, if I had a newer device I would probably have opted not to jailbreak it, though if I do end up getting a newer one I don't know if I can go back. So many features.

When I had an iPhone 3G, I had to jailbreak it because I bought it cheap in Canada outside of the regular mobile phone shop circuit. It wasn't unlocked as a matter of fact (locked on the Roger's network) so to use it with my own french SIM card, the jailbreak + desimlock was necessary. And as a computer engineer, I found it fun, being able to make your own apps without paying just to test them.

I sold it to a mobile phone recycling company to lower the cost of my current iPhone 4, that I jailbroke + desimlocked too, for the opposite reason (french network locked, and had to use it with a canadian SIM for a while... :P ). It's officially unlocked now (after 6 months of ownership, french companies legally have to unlock any phone for free if the user asks), but I still jailbroke it after the unlock, in order to be able to "play" with it... ;)

In Cydia, I like the SBSettings app (+ plug-ins) to control basic parameters quickly, Mobile Terminal, iFile and the Five Icon Rows/Columns/Folders/Dock tweaks to optimize the space on the SpringBoard.

I'm gonna be THAT guy. :troll:

I love my Nexus phone. Easy to root if I ever have to, and easy to unroot later. I could OTA it if I want, or install a whole new OS on it if I chose. But ICS is too awesome to get rid of, and none of the custom ICS ROMs are up-to-snuff yet.

Plus, the back isn't covered in glass that cracks if you sneeze on it the wrong way. Plastic absorbs shock. Glass does not.

Gotta love the iHype, though. It's entertaining.

Look up ____, it's a cracked app installer allowing you to get free apps of anything in the appstore, even previous versions and custom - unapproved apps.

[!Corgi, read the first post over again;

Though it allows for unapproved apps, piracy is also an option with it I'm sure.]

I love the Nexus as well. Not to mention the NFC, it is soooooo nice!

I'm tempted to Jailbreak my iPod 4th Gen just for the iOS source port of Quake 3 Arena (I already own it, so I'm not doing bad hopefully. :P )

wait wut they have that

GIMME

Edit: Played it, and it's glitchy, but a good port. Can't get sound to work. And controls are completely whack. But runs alright.

Well, after finding out that iOS 5.0.1 doesn't have the Safari based jailbreak yet, I think I'll wait until they either come up with that, or I find more than just Quake 3 Arena for a valid reason.
