Horror Game Recommendations Plz

I want to play some scary video games! But I am picky. And I was looking for recommendations before buying all willy-nilly. What are your thoughts? Here are some things to note.

  • I only have a PC. So obviously, it has to be available for the PC.
  • I am so fucking sick of zombies. So yeah, I'd prefer no more of those.
  • It should probably be actually scary. Not just blood/gore/zombies/demons and shit. Shit-your-pants mindfuckery is preferred to SUPER XTREME DEMON BATTLE

I have Amnesia, but it doesn't work with my graphics card because apparently I have some uncommon-ass card that it just refuses to work with (it's the only game I've had this problem with). I kind of want to get Alan Wake now that it's available over Steam.

Come all ye gamers, bring forth the knowledge of fear

I wouldn't recommend Alan Wake if you want something "scary" , it's more of a mystery and suspense type of game.

Suspense is spooky, and that's what I like about it. Games like Killing Floor and such don't freak me out, but give me something that suggests something /might/ happen and I'll be sleeping with the lights on.

As always, I highly recommend Aliens vs. Predator for the PC. Goes by Aliens vs. Predator: Classic 2000 on Steam.

Play the Marine missions on Director's Cut (which is really just hard difficulty), and you have white knuckle, shit your pants, paranoid out of your fucking mind fear. And not for the usual horror game reasons, which is resource starvation and jump scares.

AvP gives you plenty of health, plenty of ammo for your M41A Pule Rifle (Which will be your BFF), and infinite flares to illuminate dark areas. What makes the game scary, is there's a limitless supply of creatures out for your blood at best. At worst, they will render you immobile, implant an embryo in yoru chest, which will mature, and chew its way out through your breastbone.

They do not stop coming, they will flank you, your weapon can jam, facehuggers are instant death, the drones can explode in a shower of acid, and they usually come at you en masse.

There's more to it, but I'm not feeling doing yet another rave for this game.

Also, if you have Half-Life 1, then the mod "Cry of Fear."

That's kind of exactly the kind of game I was referring to when I mentioned how I wasn't interested in "shoot all the bad guys blargh isn't it scary look at all the blood". But thanks.

It's more than there's just a lot of bad guys, and lots of blood, as actually there's only about 2-4 of them at a time, and there's actually very little blood, except for the acidic blood of the Aliens. It's that they are quite possibly the deadliest thing I have seen in a game, and they are faster than Rainbow Dash, and give you absolutely no quarter. Plus their ability to climb any surface.

Remember, I find Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Dead Space, Killing Floor, all that good stuff incredibly unscary. It's not that there are creatures that's scary, it's that the ones in AvP don't require any of the "horror game" gimmicks to support them. They won't kill you because they whittle you down because you have no healing items, or because you ran out of ammo, or the weapons are incredibly ineffective against them. No, they kill you because they are quite possibly the most lethal species to exist in Sci-Fi. Often times, you will kill one, only to be doused by its acidic blood because you shot it in the wrong spot for the range you were at. And it's not simply one of those, "Hurr durr, I r shootzing stuff" games. You say something "might" happen scares you, then this might not actually be for you, as there's no "might" about it. You will die.

If any of the Aliens movies scared you at any point, than this game is liable to stop your heart.

As far as pure psychological "horror" goes, I can't help you there, as I find psychological horror to be unscary. Closest I can offer is that "Cry of Fear" mod again.

Yeah, still doesn't sound scary. Alien, while I enjoyed it, didn't really scare me either. Maybe a little the first time, but I was in grade six and watching it with a bunch of screaming girls and we were only worried about the cat. But otherwise, no, I didn't think it was that scary. Science fiction in general doesn't scare me; it flips a different switch in my head, and I approach them differently. The only time I was "scared" in a science fiction game was Ravenholm in HL2, but only on the first playthrough. It probably doesn't help that I'm averted to movie-based games, even if they're good.

You're a Predator guy, I'm a Poltergeist person. Oh well.

You need Silent Hill. Homecoming is available for the PC, I play it on my laptop. Amnesia is awesome, Penumbra... Most horror games I played were on the PS2 so these are all I can think of right now.

I don't know of many horror games other than the ones mentioned above.

…Amnesia, Penumbra, Silent Hill..

But if you're looking for a scare, don't try Dead Space. It's not scary at all IMO, and it's not just a shoot 'em up, either, which is odd. :S

One game I would say is a tad scary/jumpy is LIMBO. It's not really scary, or, isn't supposed to be, but it gives you some frights along the way, and the atmosphere is very creepy. ^^

They're both rather short, but SCP-087 and SCP-087-B are both pretty creepy. The first one set a pretty good atmosphere and had me tweaking out a little bit, but the second one actually had a scare that got me so bad I got disoriented and didn't realize I was going backwards until I realized I was going up stairs instead of down them. Much less suspenseful, but more effective IMO.

Both are good, but I'd suggest playing SCP-087 first since it's not as scary in my eyes. If I'd played 087-B first, I wouldn't have been nearly as freaked out by 087.

Not games per se, but enter at your own risk.

I see you are looking for some horror games that don`t rely on killing a lot of zombies, and you want something that relies more on psychological horror.

While im not a horror gamer myself and i hadn`t played much of them, the only one i highly recomend you is "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth", which is a game based on some H.P. Lovecraft`s stories and elements, so it has that factor of suspense that you may find interesting.

That`s all i can remember that i would recomend to you, hope it helps.

And sorry if i have bad english.

I personally would suggest Resident evil 4, if not for the excellent game that it is.

If paranoia is your shtick then i would suggest "Dear Esther" Which while not big on scares is a good way to be paranoid.

The CAll of Cthulhu Dark corners of the earth is a good one, Generally anygame where the scares arent of running out of ammo. Like Fear, Get those three.

Id also suggest dead space the first, although the scares are from the jump scares and there exists a way to break the game without any effort.

Perhaps you would enjoy The origional AVP games, but i found those not scary at all. UNless you play multiplayer with sadistic oppfor, then shit gets REAL.

I heard Homecoming wasn't very good though >:

Penumbra

Penumbra

So...tell me more about this Penumbra thing.

One game I would say is a tad scary/jumpy is LIMBO.

I like the atmosphere from what I've seen of Limbo. And it's cheap, too! I might check it out.

SCP-087 and SCP-087-B

Okay back the fuck up

There's games based on the SCP Foundation?! Okay, YES PLEASE.

I tried the first one...but...I couldn't get past the repetative music and the Engrish D; Maybe I'll try later...

Buy a new computer, play amnesia.

I don't need a new computer, just a graphics card, but I can't afford one right now. Amnesia's the only game it doesn't work with.

"Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth"

Resident evil 4

"Dear Esther"

The CAll of Cthulhu

dead space

The origional AVP games

Resident Evil 4/5 and Dead Space were...meh. I did play them. They were alright, I guess, but felt pretty standard to me. Then that's two for Cthulhu, already nay'd on AVP, and I've heard of Dear Esther but it looked like more of a mystery to me?

Also: anyone know anything about a game called Dark Fall: Lost Souls? It's on Steam, idunno

How could I forget. Ao Oni.

Should creep you out a bit, provided you're willing to download it. I watched a Jikkyou, which is basically a Japanese "Let's Play," and it's roughly, Amnesia with only one enemy, in a JRPG format, with no combat.

Personally, I'd of found it as scary as a sack of puppies, but if you're in to that "Might happen" scares, it should be right up your alley as you don't know when he will appear, and he can be a real dick about appearing.

Is...this what you were talking about? Because between the cutesy J-pop and Blue Man Group reject I'm going to have to agree with the "exact opposite of scary" sentiment.

Also; has anyone played Scratches?

That's a fanmade trailer. The monster does look like that originally, though his design is a little more... contemporary in recent versions, but the game can give nice thrills it seems. There is no J-Pop music in it, last I saw. Just a giant, blue demon that appears now and again, and proceeds to chase you as you run for your life in an attempt to lose him, and if he catches you, you die.

Here's a more recent picture of him:

Yeah, he still looks a tad goofy Vydrach...I'd probably die...of laughter...if that thing showed up. Lol. Thanks though.

And Xort EEE thank you, I will play these for sure!

Before you give it the final "No," here's the Jikkyou I mentioned before with English subtitles.

The scared Japanese guys will make this hilarious, but it does show how the game tends to pan out. Giving part 2, since part 1 doesn't actually show the demon.

He gets worse, Sara. Much worse.

The second one, for me, was scarier overall than the first one. It's nto much of a game rather than a scary ride.

Wow that Oni thing is...entertaining as an LP, at least.

I'll check it out tomorrow, Harlow!
