Hello people. When I try and update my PS3's O/S from 3.61 to 3.70 it stops at 54%-56% and I get error code 8002F1F0. When I restart thr console nothing I can do will stop the update loop its stuck in. I have been trying all day and have tried everything i can think of and can find. I also called Sony tech support and they couldn't help. Please give me assistance, I am totally confussed.

Thanks in advance.

P.S I had a problem just like this about a year ago, it is updating to 3.70 not 4.11 because a game started the update, and I haven't bothered updating it since I the last problem because i was trying to avoid this very situation, but I needed to update to play the game. The problem was fixed last time when my PS3 randomly had a fit and fixed itself, but it wont do it this time. The game was Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One.

Try this stuff, I reckon.

For future reference, Google-Fu is a great skill.

Moral. Call Sony Tech Support if you give up on trying to fix it yourself. Worst-case scenario you are looking at like $150 for a solid replacement (assuming your warranty is expired).

Yes, I got it second hand on ebay last year. That may be pary of the problem.

I have been on google for the greater part of the day and I couln't find anything that worked.

Just curious; when you got it, did you ever format the HDD?

I'd have to recommend either putting the update data onto a flash drive, and then transferring that to your PS3; updates can be found on Playstation's website. Though I would not hesitate to give Sony's tech support a call; they've always been curteous and helpful in my experiences. :)

When I got it I put a bigger HDD in, the thing started the update through a game disc, and didnt use the flash drive I had plugged in, and I cant cancel the update and try a different method, as it wont let me, and I cant activate safe mode, it will start updating again. I did call Sony but what they suggested didnt work, so I might ring them again.

Did you google the actual error code?

I did, but from what I found, nothing was useful. I am yet to try what has been suggested here because I cant find my screwdriver.

I have tried the suggestions on both places and nothing has worked. Does anyone have any more ideas? This is really annoying me.

Check everything that may possibly be a hinderance; your network settings, proxies, media servers, etc. Try calling Sony's Tech Support if all else fails; you're bound to get different input on each call.

Try going into network settings and DISABLE "Media Server Connection."

I can tell you that you are not alone. A quick google search reveals TONS of other threads with this exact same problem and 99% of don't have a solution posted.

The only problem is I cant go into any settings for it. As soon as it starts it goes into the update loop, nothing will stop it and I cant activate safe mode. If I could get into it's settings I would but I can't. And I will ring Sony again tomorrow. I would today but its Easter Monday so they wont be there.

Thanks for all the help, I'm really not sure what else I can do.

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. However, no matter what I try the PS3 wont work, and since 2 other things on it are broken, I am giving Sony their $175 and just getting the thing fixed. Hopefully I will never have to ask for help with this problem ever again.

Thanks again.

I've never had an issue with my PS3. Granted I hardly play the dang thing. I treasure it because it's rare... it has the ability to play PS2 games.

Nice. I have PS2 so I didn't need to get one with that function. But still, that's pretty awesome you have one that can do that.

I had three 60GB's in the first 4 years of PS3. They all died. Now I have one of the slim PS3's and a satin silver Slim Ps2 I got brand new off Ebay. I'm much happier with this current setup. I still use the PS3 as a place holder for my PS2 memory card data.

If you have one of software emulation BC's you have a better chance, but all those old BC PS3's are eventually destined for failure at some point. The hardware emulation BC PS3's (i.e. 60GB) are in the biggest trouble but none of the early generation PS3 models seem to last very well. However, if you are the type that knows how to reflow/reball....then that changes everything.

At the moment, I'm currently running with my 80GB original PS3; it uses the PS2 hardware emulation and, for the most part, most titles work properly. It has yellow-lighted once, but a quick trip to Sony and $190 later it was back, looking and playing brand new. The repair bill was quite steep, but it hasn't given me a problem since and I'm happy with it.

[With the PS3s that have emulation instead of a dedicated emotion-engine chip, it's always fun to see which PS2 games play properly, and which ones do not. The original Stuntman, for example, works fine except for the fact that there is severe slowdown on the menus, some of the text in the menus does not light up, and all of the missions involving the player car chasing another vehicle fail; the vehicle you are supposed to chase ends up crashing somewhere within the route and is unable to continue. Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando runs with severe slowdown as well. Glad I've still got my original PS2 though. ^^]

Hmm that is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I do miss my 60GB quite a bit. I used the PS2 emulation all the time and I just love the way it looks. I still have it here but I know of no options for fixing it.

I'm fairly certain that, if you call up Sony's customer support, they'll send you a specialized box and you can ship it to them to repair. It'll cost you, but it was worth it in my case. :)

Just letting you know that my PS3 is back and better than ever. It updates flawlessly, and all the wireless works on it now. Now I can get back to my non Nintendo gaming. $175 well spent.

Glad things eventually worked out for you; I forget, but does Sony give you any warranty on that repair?
