Sniper Elite v2

Those who I've recommended this to on PSN probably already know what it is, but I felt it necessary to post a topic here as well. Sniper Elite V2, available as a demo on PSN, XBLA, and Steam is one of the coolest takes on a third-person shooter I've ever seen. It's like mixing Mortal Kombat's fatalities with a game centered around sniping. See the Let's Play below for more info; the demo is definitely worth a try if you like what you see! ^_^

Yeah, this game is amazing. Played the demo like crazy. I really, really, really, want the full game. It's already out and I am completely broke.

This time last year I had a steady income of sorts, this year? Gone. Agh, so many games piled up. :VV

Either the Playstation Store for the PS3, Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360, or Steam for the PC. I'd prefer the Steam version if your computer can handle it. :P

That sucks beyond belief, but I'm sure you didn't need me to tell you that. :( - No matter, there's always picking great games up at bargain prices as their release date goes farther into the past. :P

Only thing I didn't really like about the game was the inability to aim down the sights with the other weapons (leading me to miss a headshot on the German in the chair from five feet away because the reticule aiming is pure luck), and how many shots that wouldn't be lethal, that were.

Though it was awesome when I Hathcocked an enemy sniper (for those that don't know, Carlos Hathcock supposedly shot through an enemy sniper's scope in Vietnam).

lol I don't have a PS3 nor an XBox :P Maybe I'll try to get it from Steam once I've bought a new monitor for my PC :):friends:

What? Shooting someone in a spot that would take hours, if not days, for them to die from and watching them drop instantly gets annoying.

I couldn't agree more with you here; that pistol has surprisingly large crosshairs, especially at close range. I remember the first time I encountered that guy in the chair, I put some dynamite near him and shot it from a distance. It killed both of us in the process, but it was awesome.

(I know, I put a " :/ " because I think it's too bad as well)

lol  I can imagine if one would have used a shotgun in that situation :-P

Like I've told you, Crazy, I really enjoy this game! Even though sniping is second nature to me in gaming, I thoroughly enjoy the implied realism they tried in this game. I know it won't appeal to most gamers (which I saw in a video of an Englishman explaining it and bashing it because you "Sat around and camped like b****es," and after shooting a guy through the nutts, "that's basically the premise of this game."), but aside from that, any gamer that enjoys sniping in ANY game should give this game a try. I just REALLY love watching the slow motion X-ray kills whenever you get a vital shot! xD

Oh yeah, one other thing that really bugged me about the game was the grossly over exaggerated bullet drop and windage.

Let me just show you something.

1000828kl.jpg

On the left, we have a 30-06 (7.62x63mm), and on the right, we have an 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm). I'd of put a 7.62x54mmR in there, but I only have dummy rounds for safe weapon practice and non damaging dry firing, and those are inside of my Mosin rifle, which I don't want to handle for a bit because it's soaking up oil right now, since I steamed all the cosmoline and any other lube/protectant out of it, so it needs to soak that oil in for a while.

Now then, in the demo, the rifle you are equipped with is a 1903 Springfield rifle, which is based on (ie stolen from) the Mauser bolt action, and fires the 30-06 rifle cartridge. The Gewehr 98K, the standard issue rifle for Germans in WWII fired, of course, the 8mm Mauser round.

Anyway, as you can see, they are relatively large rounds, with the 30-06 having a smaller projectile, but larger brass than the 8mm Mauser. The 30-06 could easily reach ranges over 1,000 meters, as could the 8mm.

However, in game, you have to aim several feet above the person at ranges less than 100m, which is ridiculous. If you play with windage too, you have to aim a couple of feet to their side, which is also ridiculous. And that's not even getting into bullet rise. Little known fact, bullets don't drop immediately after exiting a barrel. Due to the velocity, and the amount of spin that the rifling in the barrel puts on the round, they generate lift. My Springfield M1A, at the 100m zero for the scope, I can personally put a three shot group you could cover with a nickel into a target with the diameter of a tennis ball. At 200m, keeping the same numbers on the scope, to hit a man shaped silhouette in the chest, I have to aim at the kneecaps. Granted that's with a 7.62x51mm NATO, but that is still a sniper capable round, and able to reach past 1,000m with the right rifle.

Anyway, it just annoys me a bit that they gave the rifles the ballistic characteristics of a paintball gun.

lol which reminds me are we yet to find a shooting game whose gun characteristics are almost, if not same as, their real counterparts? Or such a game already exists without my knowledge? :P:lol:

but the game is still fun, though :P:)

I have yet to see one with bullet rise, even things like ARMA II don't have it. 'Tis a shame.
