Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs is an upcoming sandbox/open-world game, published by SquareEnix and developed by UnitedFrontGames. Formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong and previously published by Activision, Activision canceled the project at the last minute, and it was thankfully picked up by SquareEnix. The game puts you into the role of an undercover Hong Kong police officer, attempting to infiltrate the local triads. It mixes elements like melee/hand-to-hand combat similar to Batman Arkham Asylum/Yakuza, driving similar to Just Cause 2, air-based carjacking like Pursuit Force, and a large, sprawling open world like GTA. There are even deadly combat finishers, similar to the fatalities of Mortal Kombat. It looks fantastic to me; as both the undercover element as well as the uniformed law-enforcement officer are emphasized, the world has an incredible amount of random events as well as a 20+ hr singleplayer campaign, and it is an innovative take on a genre that has been dominated by Rockstar. I'm going to place my preorder soon, and if you would support new IPs in the industry as well, I'd be a very happy person. :-P [The last video listed is actual gameplay from PAX; I'd give at least that one a look.]

The release date is currently August 14th, 2012.

Glad you're considering; there aren't too many games out there that play from a pseudo law-enforcement standpoint, let alone look and seem to play this good. I forgot to mention [editing first post now] but the game releases on August 14, 2012.

the game releases on August 14, 2012.

Yeah, I've had my eye on this one for a while. It looks very good. I only hope they have improved the combat system. It seemed way too primitive (visually, that is. It seems to play fine, it just needs more… action going on) in that video you posted.

I must say, though, that driving trailer is wow… It looks like a racing game in parts but it's not. No open-world game with driving has ever captured the traditional racing aspect of a game. This looks like it can.

Can't wait.

There is a good reason for this; some members of the team at UnitedFrontGames had previously left Black Box Studios, the creators of Need For Speed, quite some time ago. Square Enix's publishing also brought the team that worked on Just Cause 2's gameplay mechanics. :-P

Ah, I see. Just Cause 2? Even better! Probably the best open-world game ever right there. Still waiting for 3, guess Sleeping Dogs will be good until JC3. ;)

JC2's driving was pretty good. Still not like a racing game, but if they came from NFS then I see why it looks like one.

I think, if the gameplay is done right, (and it looks it) the voice-acting/story/overall game are not complete crap (in other words, shoving everything they could into the game but not optimizing it all) then this may very well be the best open-world do-whatever-you-want video game ever.

It's certainly got the potential.

Certainly looks like they've fixed some of the issues I saw in the trailers from last year.

This looks incredible. Definitely going to buy it day-one if not pre-order it. :)

Also @Crazy, I got confused with the Max Payne recommendation you sent me. I thought it was another video for MP3, so when I realized it was for the release of the original Max Payne on PSN, I felt pretty stupid. Regardless, love those recommendations feel free to send one my way anytime you please.

Later guys.

No problem; and though the re-release of the original of Max Payne on PSN is great, it is the PS2 version. The PC version available on Steam has superior graphics and more levels/areas that they had to cut out of the PS2 version. And I'll keep sending those recommendations out; it is a feature that I must applaud Sony for implementing. :P

I mirror your opinion; I'm glad that it seems as if United Front Games and Square Enix took the time to fully develop each section of the game. Driving is what you'd normally get out of a racing game, the fighting comes from dedicated brawlers, and each component of the open world seems that it could be its own game. This is how sandbox games should be done IMO, but I'll save my praise for when the game actually comes out. :P

Also, which platform would you be purchasing it on? I'm torn between the PS3 or PC.

I'd prefer the PC one, because I don't have a PS3.

But if I had a PS3 I'd buy the PS3 version, primarily because I'm more used to a controller than a mouse-and-keyboard

Oh wait, then I'll add a PS3 to my wishlist as well! (another advantage is I wouldn't have to borrow a friend's PS Vita when I play Sly 4 :P but that's off topic)
