What if you'd had to learn a new language?

  1. 1. Which language would you rather learn?

Recommended Posts

I recently decided to go to French lessons so I could try to add a third langauge. Something that, not only I wanted, but also that it'll work for me later in my career, where any language learned counts.

What if you had to learn or decide to learn a new language? Which would be your first choice regarding your definition of utility and your own will to want?

Oohhh..as much as it pains me to say it since I kind of dislike Chinese government and culture as a whole, I would have to say I would like to learn Chinese if I had the choice. Their rising status of a world power and increased power in international business puts Chinese on the top of the list of languages to know in my opinion. European languages would be nice to learn, but I don't see it being as important to know French or Italian in the global scheme. Can't get myself to learn Arabic, in the unfortunate occasion I get to learn more about their culture - I will inevitably get more confused about the region as a whole.

Well, I chose French mainly because of it being commonly labeled as one of the "universal languages" with Spanish, English and Portuguese. French is used even on places it doesn't seem to fit. At least I saw that on some occasions

As I heard once: "English's fundamental, Chinese's the future, German's the present and French will land you a job"

I hope to be able to speak fluent Norwegian. My future plans are to eventually move to Norway since I have a lot of family out there and I've never been outside of the States.

I've always wanted to learn Russian for some reason; perhaps it is because the written form of the language looks so interesting? Or maybe saying vodka in an authentic dialect/accent would be cool.

The idea of having to learn another type of alphabet tires me. Damn Greco-romans who migrated east and mutated into Cyrilic DX

Russian, because it is the closest language to Greek (which i know) from that list you provided, hence making it easier to learn than other foreign languages (hopefully).

Well, apparently, from what I know, Germanics are easier for the Englsih speaking population (German, Dutch, Scandinavians...) and the Latin family's easier for the Spanish speakers like me (French, Italian, Portuguese...)

Brazillian Portuguese has always incapsulated me. i feel the need to know that language and its culture...if i had to move out of country (USA) it would be to Brazil. In a sense, their culture is a lost part of me. ;)

I wish to learn German, I will be teaching myself for now, and may take a class in the future. I've always wanted to visit Germany, and I want to learn a new language, I think it would be neat to speak German for some reason. :D

I'm torn between Mandarin, Japanese, and French :argue::collapse:

Japanese culture has always influenced my life, whether through anime or my zen buddhist father who has some very eastern attitudes towards things. So yeah, I'd want to actually become fluent in Japanese, though Chinese would be second due to it's sheer utility given China's place in the world as the other major power. Firefly had it pretty much right: in the future everyone will be bilingual in English and Chinese. XD

I'll probably have to learn at least one other language, so I'd chose Spanish, because that's the language I run into most on the Internet. I wouldn't really have much use of any other language, to be honest.

Hi,

already speaking German, Russian and English (and some basic knowledge in Latin). Next to go would be Japanese to understand all the animes and games from there^^

Spanish is one of the most useful languages in the world now, and will be even more so in the future.

Well, l heard Spanish speakers (of every kind, including learners) actually outnumber English speakers.

Russian, all the way. I don't know why, but Russia has always interested me. Plus I heard it is hard to learn and I like challenges.

Not quite. In terms of Native Speakers, Spanish has more speakers than English. But in terms of any speakers, English has the most speakers. Mandarin is the most Natively spoken language in the world. All the same, I'd pick Italian due to my heritage.

Being part Greek I'd like to learn more of Greek than just some of the swears. But I'd also like to learn Japanese, Italian, German, Russian, and Finnish.

I speak enough Spanish to be at least able to talk to a native speaker, I just need a little more immersion to get my vocabulary built up.

This summer I'm going to self-teach myself some Japanese. Katakana and Hiragana at least, and some Kanji if I can manage it.

Pretty close between Japanese and Russian. I've already studied some Japanese

Hiragana and Katakana are fairly easy to learn. It's more the sentence structure and grammar that (I feel) are really important to a foundation. Japanese simply isn't put together the same way as western languages, but simply learning the "math" of Japanese sentences/phrases will go a long way toward being able to read/hear and translate things.

I wanna learn German. It's an angry sounding language, so it'd be cool to yell it at random people just to freak them out.
