Starfox 64 or Starfox 64 3D

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I have a question. I would like to play Starfox 64 but I don't know if I should pick up the original version or the 3DS version. I like the save feature on the 3DS and the awesome graphics, but I prefer playing games on console... Is 40 euro worth buying the 3DS version? P.S. I don't care about multiplayer.

:welcome: to the forums. I'd go with the original on N64; cheesier and therefore better voice acting, and an overall better experience in my opinion.

64 3D.

It had everything that the original, plus improved music, plus orgasm-inducing graphics, plus more multiplayer levels, plus a better version of the multiplayer, and while the voice acting was okay, there's something to be said for the exact sound of the original.

Aside from personal opinion, the two of them are functionally the same game, so it'd be like comparing 2 clones of the same apple.

I'd go with the original, although there are the reasons to pick up both. I haven't played the remake yet, but I know there's some pretty cool features.

Original (Star Fox 64)

  • Original version, therefore classic, historical, (And awesome)
  • Better audio (Music and voice acting)
  • Better controls, as the controls were originally designed for that darn three-prong control (N64 control :-P)
  • Cheaper to pick up N64, parts, and the game than 3DS + Game
  • Also available on Wii Virtual Console

Star Fox 64 3D (Remake)

  • Remastered and cool visuals and graphics
  • Portable console, take it places
  • More multiplayer levels and content
  • Ability to save progress when playing
  • Ability to revisit completed levels

Thanks everyone, I'll go for the original first. I'll buy the remake sometime later.

3DS Audio is better. Music uses better instrument samples, and there is not nearly as much compression. It sounds so much cleaner!

All of SF64 had to be crammed into a 64-meg (at most) ROM chip. That left mere crumbs for audio after the game code and graphics elements. So, N64 audio is compressed to hell.

3DS cards can hold up to 8 gigs. You still need to compress the audio, but not nearly as much.

You'll really only get the benefit with some good headphones, however. The 3DS' speakers are absolute shit.

Ah yes, figured that one out with the DS Lite. Not that the speakers aren't terrible for a portable device. Although comparing the audio and music in both games reminds me a lot of comparing the original RuneScape music tracks with their remade ones (2004-2011). The sound quality and instrumentation was clearly better, and certainly more realistic-sounding, maybe even adding an extra "voice", but at the same time, while the older ones (I think they published the originals for RuneScape as compressed MIDIs, so your computer read the files), sounded rather bad but also have a certain charm and sound to them the revised ones don't have.

For that reason, I prefer some tracks from both games. I like Area 6 from the remake, and Aquas from the original per say.

Sort of an off-topic question, you mentioned headphones. Do you know a company that makes decent earbuds for a decent price? I'm looking for some non-Apple earbuds that are good quality, but I'm doing a terrible job at finding a good make.

Although I think Bartek has made his decision, but I do smell the 3DS remake in there too :P.

Hey everyone, looks like I got the 3ds version first. I saw it in a shop and I just couldn't hold myself. Thanks for all the comments, I'll be getting the original version sometime later.

Hey I need some help. I have completed the game a few times, but I can't seem to get on the left or middle path. I am always stuck on the right path. How do you go to the different planets on the different paths?

Ah, this starts from the very beginning!

To start onto the "Left" or harder pathway, you must get "Mission Accomplished" on missions. This can be done by completing the right objectives.

In Corneria, you must save Falco from three enemies after passing through the checkpoint, then fly through the arches in the ocean (You must fly through all three of them and Falco will yell "Follow me, Fox!" if you fly through all of them).

If you fly through the arches, you'll face a different boss than Granga (I won't spoil it for you) and accomplish the mission. From there you can head to the right, or "Harder pathway" to Sector Y. If you don't wish to go there, you have the option to return to Meteo.

Sector Y is similar to Sector X and Meteo, but a bit more complex, but the goal is simple (But can be a little difficult at first), you must finish the level with 100 hits or more (Having 90 before the boss is fine so long as you kill it fast enough). You can then proceed to Aquas. If not, you head to Katina.

This is just a basic cover for the first two levels. I don't want to spend this entire post going on about missions, but if you need more help, feel free to post here or send me a message.

Also, I know English isn't your first language, and I don't know what language you are playing the game in so certain things such as dialogue and text (Like "Mission Accomplished/Complete") May be different depending on the language.

Check this out as well, it's the Nintendo website for the game: http://starfox643d.nintendo.com/

How were people supposed to figure that all out without internet 15 years back? I guess people had more time to look for stuff. I did find everything of SM64 when I was small without internet.

I was wondering since it says on the cases where I live that you can also play them in French (Official Languages in Canada are English and French), but isn't French one of the official languages of Belgium?

A lot of it was figuring out the puzzles on your own, and that was the replay value of the game; going through a level over and over exploring its different possibilities. The flying through arches comes from the original Star Fox which on Corneria, flying through arches at the beginning of the game got you a laser upgrade. Nintendo also released a game guide as they do for most of their games, which had information on all the levels and stuff on the game (Kind of like the website they did for the remake, it's got most of that information in it). However, they did make a very basic HTML website (The internet still being very new to people then).

Yes Belgium has 3 official languages. But the dutch part of Belgium gets english games and the french part gets french games. It's also like that for movies. It's like 2 different countries. And my french is horrible. I hate that language, they can't teach it at school and I have trouble with it. I have a task for the summer vacation in french and it's hard.

Well, if you need help with French, I might be able to help. It's sort of like that in Canada, everything is English except the province of Quebec, where everything is French. Either way, I'm here to help you should you need help playing Star Fox at its finest (Well, not so much the remake as the actual game itself).

No problem! Hopefully you'll be able to make the switch after this to the original :P. How's the game by the way? Are the controls and stuff good? I didn't like them from the look of them, but that's just my observation from afar.

The game is fun. Nice graphics and stuff and the controls are very good. I got used to them in a half hour. But for some reason I would like to play the original one now. It looks very retro and I am a retrogamer so yeah. I also love the memorable dialogue in the game.

Ah yes......Well, one of the most famous Star Fox lines comes from that game. Do you know what it is? It's uhh......Do a Barrel Roll!

Some of the dialogue is a little better in the original game although the sound quality in the original doesn't sound as "Full" for the reason DZ said; the audio files had to be compressed, so the quality isn't nearly as full.

Remember too that because the original is an older game, you can't save your progress in between levels like you can on the 3DS, so if you're playing, you're playing; you better keep that N64 on or you've gotta start back in Corneria. You also can't go back to levels once you've completed them by choice. While it sounds all terrible, it's not too bad, as the levels are short and the game itself is very concise. There are lots of little helpful visual features that aren't in the original as well, such as health meters above the Star Wolf ships, and it won't say on-screen things like "Boost X". (You have to look at the chat transmissions for all that, which isn't too hard).

That's no problem, when I intend to beat the game I do it in 1 time without quitting. It's not a long game. Wel the multiplayer is kinda lame on the 3ds version. The CPU is too hard and there isn't a lot of variety on it.
