Just a quick question

I think im finally going to get TF2. I'm just wondering, do you actually use steam or just use the 1.5 MB download they give you the option of using if you don't have a steam account?

Because it just gave me some weird download time of 6 days or something like that. And that can't possibly be right???

To play TF2, you first download the Steam client (the 1.5MB download), install it, run it, then go here in a browser (simpler): http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/

Click "Play Game" or "Install Game" and then say "I have Steam installed" and it will launch Steam and tell it to install. It's at least ~10GBs or so, though, so depending on your connection speed it may take a while to download.

SF-O server is: 74.201.57.200:27015

Use the favorite on the server browser. (Favorites tab, "Add Server to Favorites" 74.201.57.200 is the IP, 27015 is the port)

EDIT: Damn, I need to play on the server. I'm in 179th place now. D:

Well apparently I can't add anyone as a friend from the group because i haven't purchased anything through steam. Some might have to add me by sending me a friend request. Is the "in-game" name the one that i see in the profile under other people's accounts or is the regular account name the one that identifies me outside of games to other people?

In-game name for me is: [sFO] StarFoxFan4Ever

Hopefully I can be found within the group.

Edit: I find it funny how i can add favorite servers but not friends. In case you are wondering later, my mouse double-clicked by itself and started the server by accident. In anycase, cant wait to cause some mayhem. Thanks for the help everyone.

I added you.

Also, if you want a premium account just purchase any item from the Mann Store. The price doesn't matter.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/31280/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_7 <- Buy this. It's only $5, it's funny, you can win some TF2 items, and it will unlock all of Steam's features for you.

Alternatively, buying something in the MannCo store will allow you to use Steam Friends as well. There are cheap, sub-$1 items. As a bonus, it will make your TF2 Premium so you don't have to be Poor and Irish with no hats. Note that I think the minimum you can put in your Steam Wallet is $5, so you'll have to spend $5 regardless. If you want to play Pyro, I recommend buying a degreaser and an Axtinguisher (Both are 99¢). Yeah, someone could trade them to you, but if you need to unlock Steam you may as well buy something you'll use!

Also, game night is tonight. It starts about 5 hours from the time stamp of this post (7PM CT, 8PM ET). Though sometimes people join early (I probably will, I need to get back up in HLStats...).

Also, seeing as you're new, if you play Spy or Engie without fully knowing how TF2 works, you're gonna have a bad time.

Soldier, Pyro, and Heavy are generally the best classes for beginners as their basic mechanics are simple. Being good at these classes, however, requires some practice. Soldier has the highest skill ceiling of the three, and is the only one of the "easy" classes that is a competitive class. Generally, learning soldier will be very beneficial to your TF2 career. Pyro is about ambush and close-quarters death. Once you get the axtinguisher, you'll be able to quickly kill anything in melee range save for overhealed soldiers and heavies. Heavy is the tank. Deals a lot of damage, and can take a lot of damage. He's also a big target. His big head attracts snipers like a candle attracts mosquitos, and the slow movement makes them easy backstab targets for spies.

If you have prior FPS experience, Sniper works, too, but no-scope shots do less damage that scoped shots and cannot headshot. If you have not played FPS games before, I'd wait on learning sniper until you can learn to aim with other hitscan weapons (pistols, shotguns, miniguns, etc.)

Scout and Demo are not as forgiving as the three mentioned before, as the scout has low health and damage output and demo requires some aim, though you can spam pipes and set stickies without much practice, you won't generally be effective without aiming. Random spam is easy to avoid, as are out-in-the-open sticky traps, making anyone with a half-decent knowledge of the game get close to you. As a demo, letting the enemy get close is a death sentence. Demo has insane damage, and scout has insane mobility. Both are a force to be reckoned with if the player knows what they are doing (both are considered competitive classes, along with soldier and medic).

Medics are important, but you should wait until you know a bit about how the game works before playing Medic, as you will be a target.

Speaking of medics, if an enemy is being healed, kill the medic first. Shooting the medic's patient will serve only to make the Medic's Ubercharge charge faster. Uber will make both the medic and his patient invincible for a while, and Kritzkrieg (Kritz) Ubers will make the patient fire very powerful shots (Called "crits," short for critical hit) for a while. You want to avoid this.

Also, you will die. A lot. Get used to it. Go for the objective and help your team, that is more important than kills alone. Dying to kill the medic or make them use the ubercharge early is worth it. Dying to reset the timer on the intel is worth it. Dying to keep the cart from rolling back is worth it.

In addition to what DZ said, we have competent players at every class, so if you need help on a particular class don't hestitate to ask one of us.

One more thing, engineers can build things called dispensers. They look like refrigerators with a TV screen on them. These give health and ammo. Help your engie keep his up if it is under attack by killing or chasing-off the attacker, and if you see an enemy one, destroy it. If you need health or ammo, and there is a dispenser, a medpack, and an ammo box in the same area, use the dispenser. Medics may need the medkit, and the engineer may need the ammo to repair/build/upgrade his buildings. Dispensers should be your primary ammo source, and rally point for your team's pushes and retreats. Dispensers also give engineers metal. If you destroy a sentry and not the dispenser, that sentry will be back very fast.

They can also build teleporters, which move you to another location instantly (provided the teleporter is charged), and sentry guns which fire at enemies automatically.

All buildings have levels. Level 1 is the level built. Level 2 have more health and are better at what they do (dispensers heal faster, teles charge faster, sentries are more powerful), and level 3 is even more so (Sentries get rockets). Putting your crosshair on a building will tell you the engie who built it and its level.

I have a dumb question(s) related to getting involved with TF2 and the SF-O members and since I am a Steam nub

1) How do I join the SF-O group and what is its name?

2) Other than purchasing TF2, do I have to buy anything else? (Edit: foot in mouth, install, not purchase)

3) When are "official" matches?

Sorry if this info is somewhere else, I just am not sure where to find it.

Well this is a weird situation. I got some practice in with randoms before, and now that game night is on, they release a patch or something and the game now says your server is running an old version of the game so i cant join tonight unless you guys quit and restart your games. I must say, in the short few hours I've played, I am absolutely convinced this is possibly the best and most enjoyable FPS i've ever played.

Yeah, a few of us left the game and then tried to rejoin and are getting the exact same thing. DZ just told me that the situation should be resolved as soon as the map changes.
