One of the reasons I did put a new desktop together was to use it for HD video-editing [as well as gaming]. What baffles me, however, is the sheer amount of choice among the consumer video editing software, and their relation to the professional versions available for much more money. I was considering two choices mainly; either Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum or Cyberlink PowerDirector 10. Both seem to be alright from what I can tell, but I haven't been able to download the trials for either as I'm still out of state and using a base-level laptop. Does anyone have any particular recommendations concerning these two or others?

Also, PowerDirector 10 seems to be the only conusmer [non-pro] software that natively supports 64-bit, therefore making use of more than 2gb of RAM. I currently have 8gb in my desktop, and being only able to use 2gb of it seems like a waste seeing as Vegas Movie Studio is 32-bit. I'm not sure whether I'd actually need that much for general video rendering and editing, however.

Thanks to all that reply/give this thread a look. :-P

EDIT - Added a poll and marked down the three suggestions given at the time of this edit.

Actually, 32bits programs can use up to 4GB of ram, not 2. ;)

I'm no video editing expert, but I'd go for vegas, I had so many issues with cyberlink editing software, like freezing when previewing videos or when using the capture card.. It was almost as terrible as windows movie maker..

Vegas HANDS DOWN. Vegas is absolutely stellar software, and I use it for all my video editing. I actually prefer it over Final Cut, which is the industry standard.

Plus, I managed to get mine for $90 from Sony, which includes Sound Forge Audio Studio (Basic) and DVD architect. A great deal, if you ask me.

Vegas has always been my first choice as well; I was just incredibly wary of the 32-bit only architecture. Since it seems to suit your needs [and comes with a boatload more if you do buy the Production Suite version] I'll probably go Vegas unless someone suggests something to the contrary.

Vegas. It is the King ... no, complete Overlord of all video software.

Concerning Vegas Movie Studio; has anyone run into problems with running out of RAM when rendering larger projects? [i doubt I'd be rendering anything over twenty minutes though.]

That hasn't been a problem for me, since I have 4 GB installed. What has, however, is working with HD video, since my GPU is outdated. Only 256MB of RAM on the card, which makes HD video and heavy effects lag up significantly. Make sure you have a beefy GPU or one of the fancy new Intel Sandy or Ivy Bridge processors.

Judging by the unanimous feedback, it looks as if Vegas is winning by a longshot. Good to see you again too, Wes. :P

If the price of Vegas is too steep, then you could try NCH Videopad. To get the free version (if you're using Windows) then go into the "uninstall or change a program" area of the control panel and you should get a prompt that allows you to downgrade to the free version. It's light on the effects side but it allows you to export to a lot of different formats.

I'm good on that end; Sandy Bridge i5 2500k and an Nvidia GTX 550 Ti should handle things reasonably well. :P

Thanks for the suggestion. Vegas Movie Studio fits what I've budgeted though; a shame the Pro versions are so ridiculously expensive.

You're good to go hardware wise I see. If you're going to be using Vegas as a power user and be working on large projects, I'd recommend getting another monitor. Even a cheap, small monitor will make things a lot more efficient. I tried making gaming videos on a 15" laptop mointor. I quit.

Being trained by professionally experienced teachers, I have to say you are all wrong and bad.

Industry uses what is best and also what is most efficient.

You are looking for Final Cut Pro (Mac Only, The literal only reason I can find to own a mac), Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects.

Learn how to use what the big boys use or you will never surmount to that quality of creation nor the career that comes along with it.

You assume I take the time to read your opinions almost as if I care or something. None of you have worked in a Studio as a Co-Op (Cogeco Cable, Niagara Falls) nor have you spent like 90% of the hours in the day editing some gay shitty footage, Shot by a grade 9 with shaky hands and HORRIBLE Audio... (Oh please, Not to mention the content) to get something good out of it.

I have over 200 Hours of Industry Experience, I have well over 5000 Hours of Adobe Premier/AfterEffects / Final Cut Pro experience and this is me telling you, That you are bad and wrong.

Congratulations - and it appears you cared enough to post in the first place. I'm using editing software on the side for any hobbyist projects I occasionally have, thereby negating the need for Premier or After Effects. Locking this now; had my answer anywho.
