Star Fox 20th Anniversary Theme

As 2013 draws nearer,I am starting work on a major theme overhaul for the site. This thread will be the progress, thread for this project.

Here is the vision: Make the site look like the menu and other various UIs from the SNES Star Fox game!

Colors from the game's menu interface will be used, as will different UI elements.

The goal here is not so much to create a slick-looking theme, as the goal with Corneria Star was, but rather to make a theme that looks and feels like Star Fox SNES in all of it's 16-bit glory.

To start, all headings and major links are in Lucida Console, a monospace font to create an older look.

The current logo borrows from the title screen, but the rest of the top of the page borrows from the "controls" screen:

You will notice that the tabs are no longer tabs, but rather "buttons" that correspond to the "buttons" containing the control schemes. The View New Content and Quick Nav buttons will become text links underneath the heading, opposite the breadcrumbs.

I also included the amber arrows from the game, though I have rotated and went with only one for better UI purposes.

More things will be there later to fill some of the empty space. For instance, something actually mentioning the anniversary would be important!

That Arwing may make it in there at some point, though I am not sure yet how to use it.

Other elements are being used as well:

Notice the green border and brown borders around the sorters. This design comes from the game as well:

Eventually, all buttons will use this style, as will some subheadings.

Also, there are hovers over all of these buttons so you know what you are about to activate. I couldn't move the > images without Javascript, and I would really rather not use it, so I am sticking to what I can do with PHP, HTML, and CSS for the moment.

Currently, the post heading that contains usernames is using it:

NOTE: THIS THEME IS VERY EARLY IN DEVELOPMENT. RADICAL CHANGES ARE LIKELY.

Suggestions are welcome!

Also, if any of you are Photoshop Gurus, and want to take a stab at creating a banner for us, here is the logo:

I love it so far! Though I am going to need some time to adjust to it like everything (Don't mind me). I don't want to speak on behalf of all the artists but I would certainly be willing to help.

I noticed in your sample page viewing a topic (The SF-O Hall-of-Fame one) that there is no border on the side of the posts while there is a border in this current theme.

There will be borders eventually. The theme is not currently usable, and like won't be for a while. Remember: This is a very early preview. My goal is by the end you won't be able to immediately tell it is IPB.

I laugh at your last sentence DZ. Is there anything specific you would like to see in someone making a banner in Photoshop? (I could take this to the CyberArtists). I'd say if you want to keep it SNES-themed, keep the text and stuff the way it is maybe just move the "ONLINE" part into the bottom of the X.

Very nice indeed, although I do really like the 64 Star Fox styled logo at the top. But what evs!

Fact: That's not the logo from Star Fox 64, but rather the one that appeared on the cover of Star Fox 64 3D

Cool! Like it so far! Maybe I could try to make a banner, but I'm going to have a lot of work in the following weeks so I can't promise anything.

Would the banner be "transparent" to let the background image appear or should it use its own background separated from the page? If that's the second, having the "space sky" image available like the logo could be appreciated.

Also, I have a suggestion : I found this fellow on dA who made a SNES Starfox font -> Look here

I know changing fonts in a website can be troublesome, but I thought using this, for the buttons and stuff, could be amusing.

Could I suggest as part of re-doing the theme, making it so when you copy text out of posts and stuff, they don't come out highlighted black? Not sure if you've ever tried copying text out of here, but when you do, it comes out highlighted black, unless that's a result of the default text being white.

This looks really promising DZ ! Looking forward to see the end result !

It reminds me of the days that AL had its retro starfox theme (I would use it every time I was on :) ), but it got flushed when they updated the forum software :(

Also, just a suggestion, but maybe you could use some UI elements from SF2 ? It had a pretty sleek UI.

I'd offer help but I'm sure other people are better than me at photoshopping (gimping in my case :P ), and besides, I'm kinda unreliable these days.

Though, if you have anything like writing facts or trivia on the SNES lore I might be able to give a hand. :)

SF2 elements may be possible. There is not a lot to work with in SF1.

This is my shot at a logo. Not exactly the best I can do, but I tried to make it look like the logo. Hard to work the fonts and all to recreate the 8-bit bitmap kinda feel of the original SF logo.

Anyway, the theme is looking really good. It'll definitely be my primary theme when it's finished. :-)

Unfortunately, I have to use standard fonts. If I start using uncommon ones, most people won't see them and will see their browser's default font.

So, the options are use images or use standard fonts. The former uses too much bandwidth and requires complicating the php code, and the later doesn't look exactly right. The later has the lesser problem.

That looks like an awesome idea. I'll see what I can do for a logo, sounds like fun. XD If you need any other graphics or input I've been rockin graphic and web design for years thanks to being ancient by Internet standards and artistic to boot. Except we shall forget my old Tripod webpages... they do not exist. :P

Yes, I'll be willing to help as well in any way that I can. I liked what you put out in terms of a logo DZ, but I would move the arrangements around a bit.

Working on a shopped logo, will post when I return later this afternoon.

EDIT: Alright, I've got two to submit

The first one I just did, and it keeps true to the original title screen. All the colors are the exact ones from the game.

Second one I did a while ago to fit SFO's more modern look. It's not perfect, but if you guys like the design better, I could make some changes to it.

This new look is very classic and SF friendly . Can't wait for 2013 :) My only question here is if all the text is going to be 8-bit including the post text?

I, at least, very, very, much approve. :P

If it's usable, though. I thought DZ said it would have to use a real font or something?

Kind of took your design and improved on it :D Thanks Icy.

Also, I have a SF-themed font. http://www.dafont.com/arwing.font Use it for anything SF. I almost exploded when I saw it.
