DZComposer
GameStop has sold their allotment of WiiU launch units already, and has ceased taking pre-orders. I'm glad I plopped down my order Wednesday. Yeah, I buy my consoles at GameStop. I don't buy my games there, though. It's looking already like there will be launch shortages. If you want a launch unit, be sure to pre-order somewhere, if you can find a retailer who hasn't sold their allotment yet.
sroberson
I'll probably wait until the price drops a bit and there isn't such a huge demand for the system...or when a Star Fox game comes up and ill throw my savings at the first WiiU that is put up on EBay. Problem is, looking back on the Wii sales when I worked at Target, it could be half a year before the demand drops if not longer considering I am somewhat optimistic that the WiiU will pick up some slack on the hard core gaming market as well as hold on to the casual and younger gamers
Fana McCloud
Is there ever a time when there AREN'T launch shortages? Do they seriously under produce on purpose or is it physically impossible to make enough? I have no idea. XD
Icy
Pre-ordered already as well. At GameStop. I also buy [most of] my [console] games there. I wonder how this plays out. Nintendo certainly doesn't really want a repeat of the Wii, do they? But I dunno. At least this means the console is hot atm.
Dublinthefox
Crap! I was just about to go and preorder mine. I guess I'm just gonna have to find a way to get one during the rush.

CrypticQuery
Ooh, I should have pre-order one. Oh wait. It's a WiiU. ... Ooh, thank god I didn't pre-order one. BURN THE HERETIC! ====== The Wii-U is shaping up to be incredibly attractive in price, feature set, and overall appearence. Here's hoping the third-parties support the thing and that demand isn't so great that people get trampled when trying to get one. Not sure if I'll be making a purchase of one; I'd rather upgrade my graphics card though that stance may change if some heavy-hitter games are announced.
psy_commando
Well I'd buy one, but I'm all out of cash, and I don't want to buy a console without games to play on it :S I also don't want to do like last time ! I bought a Wii hoping there would be a Starfox for it, and I was wrong :(
Ellanie
Sorry, Nintendo, I want to be a PC gamer, now, so the money's going to the shiny new PC. And I totally called it on console shortages, and I'm far from the only one. Ugh. It's a cunning and shady method to advertise, as shortages to the layman make the item in question appear extremely popular, when the demand is high. It makes it seem rather elite to own one when others just weren't fast enough or just can't spend the extra to snap them off of Ebay. This is exactly what they had done early on with the Wii, and may do with the WiiU. Let's just see how bad it is around Christmas.

Do they seriously under produce on purpose or is it physically impossible to make enough? I have no idea. XD I have a feeling that, yes, they purposefully only produce so many consoles to create a shortage and increase supposed demand for the product. If its in such short demand then consumers are tricked into thinking that they have to get a hold of it since it is in such high demand and its hard to find (basic consumer psychology 101). Not only are they creating artificial demand by not producing enough, they are also attempting to stretch out their profit line so that they won't see an insane influx of income from the initial sales of the system and then their sales hit a lull for the several years. If they are able to maintain steady sales for a year or so with a console that is hard to come by, its safer for the company to tinker with their assets. In other words, would you rather have someone pay you $7,000 today to cover a year? Or have them pay you $600 per month for a year, totaling $7,200 after a year? Not to say that I like the idea as a consumer, but I would practice the same thing in a heartbeat if I were leading a company that could get away with it. Fana McCloud
Haha, well Nintendo and I have very different business strategies. I'd rather get the money when the console's price is higher, and have more money now to reinvest or play with. I don't like tricking people psychologically because I believe they already know what they want and making something seem scarce won't change that as much as they'd like, but maybe I overestimate human intelligence. The only reasons in my mind for stretching profits over time is to lower one's tax bracket and not piss off investors I suppose.
Dublinthefox
Well I was able to preorder one. Apparently when they said they were all full of preorders was for the black 32G version. The best I could do was preorder for the white 8G version. I may not be getting the best one on the shelf, but at least its something.
Star Fox Runner
DAMN! I'm home visiting my parents. Once I get back to college I'm going right to my favorite game shop and placing an order.

I guess if they do try and stretch out the demand for the system though they could keep the price the same the same $300/$350 model till the 'demand' drops off and then they can lower it again to continue sales. I mostly think of trying to stretch out sales the way I mentioned is because I personally think managing a single large lump sum of money is a lot harder than a constant influx of money over time since it can be depended upon and not wasted as quickly (HEY! You know what sounds great! More motion controls!!! LETS BLOW OUR DEVELOPMENT MONEY ON IT!! *two years later* oh....ooops...). But that's could just be me :
Punchy
See, while I'm not the biggest fan of the Wii U, I'm still going to get one. I'm kind of glad I'm waiting for the craze to die down though, as hopefully Nintendo throws a price drop before the Holiday Season so I can snag one for Christmas. Ellanie
The holiday season of NEXT YEAR, maybe, but the November release date means it's smack in the thick of it this year, and we won't likely be able to casually walk into a store and get one until this coming spring, and we can't expect a price drop for at least a year or so unless the WiiU as a whole does especially poorly in sales (as the 3DS did.) Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted October 4, 2012 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted October 4, 2012 I'm on the fence about Wii U. Eventually I will have to upgrade if new games that I want come out, like Legend of Zelda or Star Fox. no GCN compatibility bugs me, but I can understand that as it's almost two generations ago. I can see the Wii U being sold out really damn fast at work. Maybe I'll get lucky and can put one on layaway :P
