XCOM: Enemy Unknown looking to be a promising modern TBS

While I've never experienced the original XCOM games, I have heard of them quite often. For a Turn-Based Strategy game about defending the Earth from classic aliens with an elite defense force, they left a big mark on the genre, so big that expectations for the upcoming reboot of the franchise are sky high, fueled by nostalgia and a true love for the series. For this game to meet those expectations it must completely reinvent how we view the modern day TBS while retaining its roots. And as best as I can see the games designers have been doing just that.

Garth DeAngelis, Lead Designer - “That’s our biggest challenge, clearly. Maintaining the spirit of the original, but then re-imagining it in a way. There have been many changes in game design, many changes in how narrative works. Getting that ingrained in the game as well has been a very big challenge. We looked at the core systems of the original that the game had to have: the strategy layer versus the tactical, the turn-based play, the base expansion. Giving you destructible terrain, the fog of war, the classic aliens. We have a lot of elements there from the original, but we wanted to twist it and make it feel more appropriate in the modern day.â€

Personally, I am beyond excited for this title, and if you'd like to give it a try there's a Steam demo out now. If you can't access that they even created an interactive youtube tutorial, complete with squad choices and tactical decisions that affect the outcome.

So what do you guys think? Worth a shot? *wipes salivation from shirt*

I played the original game, love it, have been looking forward to this game for awhile. Too bad I'm too cheap to get it until after it's like $5-10 on sale on Steam or something down the road, but that's the price I pay for being poor. :P

Already pre-ordered it, can't wait to name my troops after my friends and send them to their dooms victory. Just started playing the original game but having a hard time getting started, my army of Guiles keep getting blown to bits by floaters...

Steps/tips for victory:

1) Treat your time units like a precious commodity, and always have some left over on each unit so that they can respond to attack during the enemy turn.

2) For the love of fuck, USE COVER, because your life depends on it.

3) Crouching also makes you harder to hit, and if the cover is short, you need to do this to not get your head blown off.

4) Do not send anyone off alone in any given direction - they will die, gruesomely.

5) Snap shots are sometimes better than aimed ones, especially on rookies who can't hit worth crap ANYWAY so having more shots is better.

6) To increase chance of hitting, don't shoot from clear across the map, distance actually does affect accuracy, A LOT.

7) When in doubt, GRENADES.

Any intercepting tips, I have a hard time shooting down those UFOs because they usually flee as soon as I make contact with them.

Xcom is godly and all who think diffrently are obviously aligned with the Xeno scum and must perish.

The best LP of Xcom i have ever seen was done on spacebattles. Everything was exploding Everything. Everyone had missile launchers and if they didnt clense 80% of the map in a mission it was an off day. The kicker? The Base commander is Gendo Ikari.

If i could find it i would link it.
