Aerial Combat Games/Space Shooters General Thread

Apparently there is not a general thread for non-SF aerial combat games or space shooters similar to Star Fox, so i think it's time to create one.

This thread is to talk away about any space shooters or aerial combat games, like Ace Combat or Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., for instance. I think SWTOR may also fit here due to its shooter-ish combat system in space missions, from what i've seen and heard of. Note that things like Flight Simulator/Micro$oft Flight are not specifically shooters, but aerial combat simulators are also fitting here.

Well, so far i've played H.A.W.X. for PC and H.A.W.X. 2 for Wii, and the Ace Combat series from games 2-Zero, except for the portable ones and AC6.

Got anything new coming up or announcements on a game series? Here is also the place to post it.

Probably the only game I remember that fits this gaming style is Crimson Skies. It was basically what the U.S. would have been in the 1930's if they became completely dependent on air travel for even the most mundane of tasks. This meant a lot of planes, a lot of dog fights, a lot of zeppelins, and a lot of air terrorism (the kind that involves shooting planes with other planes).

I sort of misplaced my copies of the games, but I loved 'em. Helped prepare me for any other aerial combat games that I may have played afterward (Star Fox, for instance).

I always liked Ace Combat 4. I've played 6 too. I have a space fighter game for 360 called project Sylpheed. It's kinda neat, but I find it hard.

I find Evochron Mercenary pretty interesting - it tries to be a fairly realistic space simulator. You can mine, trade, survey, explore, and yes even fight. Fighting is pretty different in a zero-gravity environment like space, haha. XD Most people get frustrated with the inertia and difficulty in avoiding missiles and rage quit.

I was actually seriously thinking about getting a good flight sim combat game...Didn't see much hope in H.A.W.X. especially after I heard some of the Youtube reviews (worth a hill of beans, I know), but Ace Combat looked pretty good. Which one do you think would be the best?

I started of with games like this by playing Aerofighters Assault for the Nintendo 64 (discounting Star Fox since its not really a flight sim at least to the extent this game was). I keep running into the old music from that game and I can't help but just want to fly corkscrews around enemies and fire missiles at them in high velocity violence >:-)

Any of the PS2 ones. 4/5/Zero are the good ones, 5 especially story-wise.

6 for the 360 is okay, but I couldn't care less for the characters in it. Flight physics is nice though. 4 is another one with a good flight physics model.

I really liked Ace Combat (though it is the only Ace Combat I've played :| ).Have you looked at IL2: Birds of Prey? It seems to have gotten good reviews if you want a WW2 flight sim for a 360 or PS3. However, If you want a more realistic sim you are going to have to get a pc flight sim. I personally prefer IL2: 1946; it is a WW2 sim, but you get access to all those pretty experimental rocket and jet planes that were being worked on at the end of the war. It is a few years old though.

AC04 was my favorite one in the series. The story was great and I loved the music. I actually downloaded all of it.

I did play 6 but didn't like it. I've played IL2 before on PC. I also am in the beta for World of Warplanes. It's fun.
