I suppose there is not a general thread for actual science focused in space. Spacecraft, possibility of new space missions, launch streams, news, pictures, etc, it all goes here. I'm already leaving something for you all to discuss; Advanced space travel, and the best, apparently it's possible!

"Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility." These are the words of Dr. Harold "Sonny" White, the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate. Dr. White and his colleagues don't just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they've already started the work to create one.

Yes. A real warp drive, Scotty.

HOUSTON — A warp drive to achieve faster-than-light travel — a concept popularized in television's Star Trek — may not be as unrealistic as once thought, scientists say.

A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving faster than light. A concept for a real-life warp drive was suggested in 1994 by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre; however, subsequent calculations found that such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy.

Now physicists say that adjustments can be made to the proposed warp drive that would enable it to run on significantly less energy, potentially bringing the idea back from the realm of science fiction into science.

Thoughts?

(I'll be posting more when i can. I'll also post livestreams of spacecraft launches if there are any.)

Oh, and if you're a night sky photographer, feel free to post your own photos.

Oooh, a fellow enthusiast. What with termination of the shuttle program and all...I still curious as to what lays ahead for our space programs. Speaking of curiosity--Did you by chance catch the NASA streaming of landing of Curiosity on Mars?

As for sky photography-- i wouldn't say I'm a "photographer" but i see something eye catching i'll post it.

Sadly, i didn't catch the streaming, but i tend to regularly lurk the MSL page, so at least i can see the imagery. :-P

Oh, and launch news:

Launch site: ELA-3, Kourou, French Guiana

A nearly-completed Ariane 5 for Arianespace’s upcoming Flight VA210 currently is in the Final Assembly Building, ready to receive its EUTELSAT 21B and Star One C3 passengers for their November 9th liftoff.

Arianespace will use an Ariane 5 ECA rocket, designated VA210, to launch the Eutelsat 21B and Star One C3 communications satellites. Eutelsat 21B, formerly designated W6A, will provide data, video and government services to Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
