ShutUpNavi
This thread is for talking about severe and extreme weather both past, present, and hypothetical. Anything from tornados to giant snowstorms can be covered here. I suppose this might be a good topic to start with Hurricane Sandy currently on it's way to America's Northeast coast. Everything seems to indicate this storm is going to be bad. Right now its all but certain to collide with a nor'easter to create what their calling a "perfect storm". Question is what do you think is going to happen, and how could this affect you? While were at it have any of you gone through hurricanes, storms, or other extreme weather like this before? If so feel free to tell your story here.
Icy
Didn't know Sandy was going to be that serious. Huh. I haven't been keeping up with it since it wasn't headed our way, so ehh. Hope it doesn't do too much damage though! I've been around for any hurricane that's hit anywhere around Alabama since 1996, so it's been quite a few. Most memorable of course were Ivan and Katrina...Dennis too, I guess. They were quite the experience for me. Ivan hit at like 2AM here iirc and it was amazing having the door open from time to time and seeing the rain pour down, wind howling, etc. Once it got too bad to be outside it was fun and sort of cozy, my whole family being stuck inside with the power out, crunched up in the hall for added safety. Lots of canned/junk food was eaten that night and on for a few days. Katrina was a much worse storm but we didn't get quite as much as Ivan. It was fun too because it hit during the day iirc (again) and so it was a bit different. Dennis didn't do anything but knock a few limbs down from some trees. The power never even went out... Did quite a bit of damage to where it really hit, though. I know, me saying this was fun and all may be in poor taste, I suppose. These things killed quite a few people and destroyed homes, whole towns, etc, and I hate that, but there was nothing I could do to prevent that. What better to do than try and have fun? /shrug We haven't had anything major at all since Katrina (2005). So yeah.
The Shaper
This, being Canadian weather, means it will be snowing perpetually until the sun moves closer to the earth in a few billion years. So yeah 20 inches of snow all around! Also, that's the first time something white has been 20 inches long. True story. Just kidding, it's been raining here since October started. Went from no rain for 3 months to tons of rain all day erry day. Nothing severe.... yet....
Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted October 28, 2012 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted October 28, 2012 We're supposed to be getting hit hard here in the East Cost. A probablity exists that the power may go out, and it may be out for a day to a week I hear. So If I disappear for a length of time, It's probably cause power went. Drasiana
Shaper, are you on the island? That 7.7 earthquake just hit and everyone's freaking out. I don't think I felt it out here, though a section of the Skytrain seemed unusually rocky. Scary! Hope there aren't too many aftershocks or tsunamis >: As far as other extreme weather goes, I was in hurricane Katrina when it hit Florida. It was really fascinating, we watched as the transformers across the city busted and chunks of it would go dark. The rain was coming through the windows and palm trees were flying everywhere. I remember a bit of shaking a few weeks ago but Victoria has been pretty silent.
Drasiana
Like, two hours ago there was a huge one by the Queen Charlottes. If you're in Victoria you should be okay though because you're on the interior part of the island, but there's a big tsunami warning in effect for the outside of the island, Alaska, and Hawaii apparently. There's been some pretty big aftershocks too.

Arashikage
I'm gonna get hit by Sandy. Right now, my parents are out in Massachusetts and my sisters are elsewhere, so I need to prepare the house myself. I have my 72 hour pack because I'm going to be on call for damage assessment just like during Irene. If we lose power, I won't be surprised, but I will be pissed. I'll probably have to go to North Branford or somewhere if they're not flooded.
CrypticQuery
Being in one of NYC's five-boroughs, I am most definitely going to be affected by Sandy - probably late tomorrow going into Tuesday. I do hope that the severity is vastly exaggerated, though since I have previously lived in the state of Georgia I do have firsthand experience with hurricanes. Let's hope for the best. Also, this is relevant;

SpiderStaryu
I'm in New York, so I'm going to experience Hurricane Sandy. I've just been preparing for the damn storm these past few days, bought lots of double A batteries, got my flashlights, already bought some food, and other essentials; hopefully I'm ready!! There's been some REALLY strong winds, so I know the full-blown storm is going to happen soon.
DZComposer
Stay safe. Evacuate if you're told to. Don't drive on flooded roads. Stay away from downed power lines. Keep a NOAA radio handy.

CrypticQuery
Apologies for the double-post, but thought I'd share this; The FDR-Drive is completely underwater; Also, the Hudson River is beginning to overflow and low-lying neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn are beginning to flood and lose power. Thankfully I live at a partially higher-elevation but FDNY has been up and down my block repeatedly as power lines topple and trees snap. The actual brunt of the storm hasn't even hit yet and shit is hitting the fan already. The subway system has a good possibility of flooding as only 700 pumps [some of which are nearly a century old] that work to pump out water are overworked and can barely pump water out on a normal rainy day. Arashikage
I was just in Rhode Island doing last minute barricading on a shop. It was 9AM and the waves were around 8 feet tall. It was a scary experience, especially because the shop was right on the shore. The cop wouldn't let us through, so we got a pass from the sergeant because we had to actually do some preventative work before it was too late instead of checking on property like the other people wanted to do. Upon getting back, I checked out the substation for CL&P, my power company, some genius thought it would be a great idea to build it right next to a river. When I came back it was around high tide and the river was almost at the bottom of the bridge, which is bad. I really don't want to lose power, my part of Branford is at under 10% power loss, and I want it to stay that way, but they're saying it'll only get worse. Also, this picture is from Milford CT, someone didn't weigh down their trampoline. can you imagine that? How freaking scary that is?

CrypticQuery
A crane went down in Manhattan; it appears with a little more coaxing the entire thing will drop. I believe NYPD/FDNY have the area under control and are in the process of evacuating people in surrounding buildings.
Gene Inari
:S I've got some extended family on the East Coast. They're a bit more inland, but man, I can't imagine what it's like being in middle of some extreme weather. I've lived in Chicago my whole life, which isn't so crazy in the weather department, so I haven't had much experience on the topic.
CrypticQuery
The wind and rain are getting incredibly heavy now; farther down the avenue power is completely down. FDNY has passed multiple times, the lights continue to flicker, and slight flooding is occurring in the street. The hurricane makes landfall in an hour or so; all major tunnels are shut down among other things. Stay safe, all!
Drasiana
We got hit by another earthquake tonight, and in true Dras fashion I didn't notice. The Vancouver Sun provided us with this extremely dumb headline though: "Major earthquake gives real-life drill to B.C. first responders" Please, tell me more about how a "real-life drill" is a thing and not "emergency responders doing their jobs"
DoctorAllosaurus
Apparently I'm supposed to get hit really hard today with like 80 mph winds. Let's see if that actually happens. ...pffft, never mind. Sunny skies and a nice breeze, way to go sexy weather lady.
Arashikage
Sandy has passed through CT like a fucking hurricane. Wait... Anyway, they just turned on my power, I consider myself lucky only having 16 hours of no power, others won't have their power for weeks. I don't know how long I'll have power for so I better post this message quickly. The storm already took a life in CT. A tree fell on a firefighter and his oxygen tank exploded. My heart is with the family of that firefighter. It's sad to see and hear things like this happening, and though I don't know who he was, I'm sure he died doing his job, people like that are all heroes. A tree fell through my house yesterday, and now there's a huge hole in my roof and a smaller hole in the side of the house. Not fun. We had to go out and take pictures of the damage before we patched it so we can get our insurance. We had to patch the holes quickly before things got damaged from the water. It was on the side of my parents room where their closet was, and the attic where some stuff was. Luckily it didn't take the entire side of the house out. In other news, this is one of my favorite pictures from the storm. Hurricane or not, they are still standing guard.
