The Saurian Adventure Episode 0: Prologue

Robert Monroe

He Mentally sighed as he got no response from the psychic. He then snapped back to reality.

" Well.. to be honest... i really don't like my name anymore... it reminds me too much of what i had before I entered the labs and the contingency troop got that damn order that took every-....." he thought a bit. "that's not important... not anymore. It's over... all those people are gone, and I'm stationed to work here and that all that matters"

He thought a bit and came up with a better elaboration. " It doesn't matter what i'm called or how i feel, all that matters is what i can do to help you and the others on the mission...I'm a soldier... a tool... no more and no less. I used to have a name.. but personally I'd rather not put up with the sour feeling in my stomach when i hear someone else say it... sorry if that sounds mean or blunt... but the less i get to know you, the less it'll suck when something goes wrong."

He sighed and walked ahead of her, straightening his neckerchief and trying to remain between people, rather than walking next to someone.

Jami smiles, the decors of her gown jingling like little bells as her legs moved across the hangar as she faces Eurydice. "He's mine, yes. My little boy," she says as she strokes the boy's face. "This is Matthew. He can be a bit of a handful, but he's well-behaved and he knows not to interfere with Mommy's work." She ruffles his headfur, a light tug on his ears. "Why don't you make your way to Dad now? Or go play games in your room? Mommy's going to do grownup stuff now." She waves towards one of the soldiers to escort her son away as she continues her way down the hall.

UPDATE

~-*-*-*-~

Matthew, the child, groaned in a manner typical of a boy his age as Jami stroked his face tugged his ear.

"Gyah, mom! I wanna see what's going on with all these strange new people... can't I watch, pleaaaaase?", he contests. The Cornerian soldier looks to Jami before taking any action either way. All the same, the walk was short, and the party reaches an access hatch at the far end of the hallway. Flashing a security card, one of the soldiers opens the door, revealing the group's destination: the command bridge of the entire M.S.S..

As you step inside, you're greeted to the sight of several dozen operators and technicians working on consoles and watching monitors, and amidst the blue and green glows of computer screens, a panoramic viewport goes around the entirety of the room, allowing a wide view of the open space surrounding the station. Sure enough, the station was in orbit over a small planet, and that planet had entire continents missing from its surface, floating around in unnatural ring. The rumors it seems, were very much true about Sauria.

In the center of the room was a broad circular table, with an overhead lamp shining down over it. The table itself was a holo-grid of the planet Sauria with various technical readouts swirling around. And there standing opposite of each other at the table stood two men: one of them an eagle dressed in a well-tailored military uniform, the other a towering well built feline with bronze fur and a long, draping, hefty longcoat. His hair was light blonde, and groomed on his head in a modest pompadour with his muzzle groomed into a fine beard and mustache, giving him a dignified, heroic look. He reviewed the grid with interest, looking up at the sound of the hatch opening, smiling warmly at the familiar sight of his wife and son.

"Dad!", Matthew exclaims, rushing ahead of the group and up to the cat, jumping into his arms for a hug. The man chuckled and embraced the child before setting him down, also ruffling his hair.

"Son, you've come to see the briefing? I thought your mother would've sent you to your room by now, heheh!", he smirks, flashing a wry grin at Jami before standing upright. "All the same, we're about to discuss something very important, so stay back and play with your toys, alright?"

The child wolf-cat frowns and grumps over to a nearby empty chair and seats himself in it, watching. With that, the adult takes the chance to introduce himself.

"So you've all arrived. Welcome you all, to the Monroe Science Station! I am, of course, the head of this fine institute, Captain Robert Monroe, and I'm sure you're all wondering why you're here today", he begins speaking, motioning for Jami to come stand beside him.

"As you can see...", he resumed saying, gesturing out to the view of Sauria crumbling apart through the reinforced window, "the planet Sauria is in a state of critical emergency. When Corneria discovered the world several months ago, it was the biggest news buzz since James McCloud died. We built this station to study it and its people from relative safety, without interfering with the natural process of history... but, some weeks ago, we detected large amounts of instability in Sauria's geothermic structure. And now... well, you can see for yourself."

Robert pauses as he paces back and forth in front of the table, arms behind his back and head hanging low.

"We can not divine the cause of this catastrophe, either. Not from up here. If a solution is not found soon... Sauria may explode entirely. And if it does... well. I shouldn't have to tell you what planet sized chunks of debris would do should they collide with any planet in Lylat. It will be a holocaust that even Andross would've been jealous of", he says solemnly, standing upright and looking over the group.

"And that is why you all are here. From a selection of hundreds of dossiers, essays, and resumes, all provided to me personally by General Pepper and the Cornerian army's intelligence units, I have selected you ten individuals for your talents, your skills, your knowledges, your strength, your insight, and your abilities, to join myself and my wife on the first ever expedition to Sauria's surface. Together, we will discover the cause of Sauria's destruction at the root, and even if we can not save the world, we may yet still save Lylat...", the towering feline drifts off for a moment.

"Now, I say to you all... do you accept this proposition? If you feel you are not up to the task, you are welcome to back down. A transport will be provided to you back home, and that will be that. No strings attached on my honor as captain of this vessel. If you do choose to work with me, though... then I shall answer any questions you may have, and we may begin the debriefing. So, whose with me to save Lylat?!" Robert proclaimed with heroic gusto, before going silent, watching the party over, awaiting their responses.

Renard looked around idly as they entered the briefing room. He let the Captain go through with his speech, waiting for him to finish. Nodding a bit before creating another psenergy flame. Holding it in front of the Captain, He watched it carefully as it held a color before he extinguished it. He was quick as to not cause anyone alarm

Royal blue.. one who seeks knowledge with gusto, yet is capable of following their heart with openness and purity to make their life fulfilling and worthwhile. A person who wishes for the best in everything and everyone. a truly noble soul and one who deserves the utmost respect.

He Saluted deftly and respectfully. "Project Stargazer. Reporting and willing to engage in this campaign to restore the planet to its normal state."

He thought and bowed for good measure. " I also thank you for your purchase, Captain.. I was hoping for a change of scenery."

Guess I should thank the scientist who managed to get my study file to this guy as well... If i ever see him that is... hehe.. he probably wasn't expecting his offer to be taken, but hey.. he has funding for his research now.

Still He couldn't help but look out at sauria, wincing and flattening his ears as well as squinting... it truly was a sorry sight... if souls could scream, this must be what it sounds like, only much softer, and not the cacophony it was. Massive, truly massive streams of conflicted psenergy erupting from the large craters left from the floating sections of the planet, the red and blue streams keeping the floating continents aloft. They seemed to still churn in a bicolored inferno, threatening to rip the planet apart.

We'd.. better fix this.... and fast.

Axle pulled his arms across his chest, he was listening, but more importantly he was analyzing the Captain. "Whose with me to save lylat?", axle smirked. With this band? A challenge indeed, he suddenly found himself hoping Monroe had chosen the right team.

"Cap'in" axle said informally," Any maps, or geological information i could get my hands on to would be obliged, much easier to find ones way about when a paths have been planned. Also Cornerian level access to data bases would be extremely helpful." His arms shifted.

"Saving Lylat? Sounds good to me. Sir, I'm sure you know what I'm good at. Gimme a target, and I can take care of it."

Manthony snapped a quick salute.

"Holy hell," muttered Freyr after gazing out the viewport at the crumbling planet. "Any idea how long the planet has before it reaches a point of no return? Was this planet attacked by some super weapon, or, something?! I'm all for trying to keep this thing from destroying the galaxy but we have to know right now if there is any hope in trying to save it. From my approximation this hunk of rock looks pretty darn dead."

Pausing for a moment, one of the phrases spoken sank into Freyr's mind as his analytic mind picked it apart. "Wait a minute...you, the government rather, built this massive space station just for this purpose? For some reason I can't help but seem astounded at such an expenditure on a research facility that contains no helpful insight as to why this is happening. Guess that's why the intercontinental hammers the Fed buys are 40,000 CD (an exorbitant amount), heheh."

Gene's mouth went slightly agape, finally getting a clear view of just how desperate the situation on Sauria was. Huge chunks of earth were orbiting the planet, bits of green still seen on the surfaces of the floating continents. Now I see how a sense of peril could be felt from so far... The question of whether or not to help Sauria was a moot one to Gene. Of course he would! "I naturally accept." Gene said plainly with a slight bow of his head, hiding his sense of urgency and excitement.

Amelia stared beyond the glass, both awed and horrified at how the planet looked, with the pieces just casually floating about like no ones business. She's seen the photos, she's watched the videos and CGI models, and heard an entire alphabet of theories as to how Sauria is doing what it's doing. But nothing served any justice compared to actually seeing it in person. It freaked her out to say the least.

"Captain Monroe..." Amelia started incredulously, "Are we LANDING on that?"

Florence stepped forward upon hearing Amelia's concern. "Yes we will, girlie. And everything will be fine, I've been talking to the captain at length." The eagle stopped to adjust his uniform with a pause. "But don't worry, ladies and gentlemen. I'm on board. My name is Florence Sorel, Colonel Florence Sorel. Certainly you guys have heard of me?" The colonel panned his beady, almost intimidating eyes around the room, almost certainly to dumb stares. "Hmph. Well, what matters is I'm the brains behind this operation, I'm a genius, a prodigy if you will. While under my wing, there's hardly a thing about this mission that could go wrong, so none of you worry. Especially you, Miss." He ended with a smirk, and went back to silence while watching the group carefully.

Robert looked over the crowd of people as they began to speak up, then the few who still remained quiet. As concerns and loyalties were secured, he addressed those who spoke to him.

"Ah, Stargazer...", he began, nodding at the fox with a small smirk at his blue psyenergy flame. "Your file was most impressive, I do say. Although, this is not a "purchase". You're not an tool, but a member of this team now. You are being paid, yes, but I have enough tools already. What are tools, without the hand who wields them, no?", he says with a bit of flair. "I'm looking forward to seeing your abilities on the field."

Robert noddded, then looked to Axle. "Ah, yes, we do have detailed geographic recordings of the entire planet, thanks to our extensive study prior to the crisis. However, they may be slightly inaccurate given the current situation", he says, nodding to a nearby drifting continent (Walled City!). "Sadly, I can't give authorization for casual access to the databases. We have a crackerjack team working on that already. You and the others are needed for more than just a desk job."

When Manthony gave Robert a quick salute, the captain chuckles and returns the gesture.

The feline frowned some at Freyr's comment. "Indeed. Despite our vast wealth of knowledge on Sauria, from its geography, to its climates, to its atmospheric contents, the entire nature of this crisis baffles us all. That is why we're forming this team: to get to the source of the problem and figure it out there. This whole thing truly just... defies science. Those floating landmasses you see?", he asks with a stiff point toward one (Walled City). "Our studies suggest these break offs are still inhabited by living, breathing animals. They maintain atmosphere and ecology, despite common sense saying it should be deader than the moons of Eladard."

Finishing his statement, Robert turned to Gene. "I'm glad to have you aboard. I think you and Jami will get along very well, Mister Inari", he chuckles.

Robert's gaze drifted to Amelia, his expression turning slightly mischievous and mirthful. "That's right, ma'am. We are going to be the first Lylatians to set foot on Sauria's surface... what's left of it, at least. Quite exciting, isn't it?! A real adventure of a lifetime! They'll write history books about us, no doubt, heheh. As I said, studies SUGGEST there is still a maintained atmosphere, so don't worry about your blood boiling... hopefully!", he laughs somewhat.

Lastly, he steps aside some to allow Florence to introduce himself, smirking at his oh so humble introduction. "Ah, yes, and this is Colonel Sorel. He's been working with me side by side on this operation soon since the crisis began. Despite his... enthusiastic attitude, the man's a bona fide hero to be sure. The jailbreaker of Fichina during the Lylat war, among other things I can't be bothered to remember", he smirks at the eagle, patting him on the back.

Robert then looks to the rest of the party for any further comments or questions.

Eurydice just studies the mess of rocks everyone around her insisted was a planet named Sauria. She's not quite a geolgist or pathfinder or psychic, but the planet even felt fundamentally wrong. "So the planet's blowing up, right?" Eyurydice asks as intelligently as layman's terms would allow. "I have done some very stupid missions in the past. But a planet going up is a bit different from a refinery on fire I think." She looked long and hard at the plaent again. She was quite interested in how it was that each continent became it's own planet in a sense. But, she was more interested in how they were to run missions on the mess of-- "Sauria" in the state it was in. "Won't be boring at least." she says mainly to herself.

Probably also of note was that she felt a bit put off by Captain Pompadour and the other one with the girly name. Granted, she could respect them but something felt wrong here too. Problems with authority? She didi't have much issue with that before. Maybe it was the ego. Eurydice waits to see how well deserved the confidence was. They reached Captain and Colonel, right?

"You're not an tool, but a member of this team now."

The Captain would see a very... -very- perplexed look come across the teen's face. Confusion of such a high degree that it borderlined complete disillusionment. The entire notion struck him as odd, seeing how it went against everything he was taught and conditioned to beleive.

"E-Excuse me?" He said questioningly before he realized how weak that sounded. he then regained his composure, cleared his throat and tried again, making up his excuse as he went along.

"Excuse me sir, but i'd like to be further informed of how we are going to go about this, the process of this operation... Namely: Where we are landing first, how we get there, what we're to be loking for and whatever else we are to do upon our arrival or during our stay."

He checked his person.. He had forgotten his meager equipment at the facility.. just because he could make weapons at a moments notice dosen't mean it was a bad idea not to be armed with something corpreal, especially in a pinch. "Also.. is there an Armory or a storage locker or something of that nature? and is there a limit to the amount of firepower we are to bring, or what types of vehicles we are allowed to use?"

Ryan stared out the window at the shambled mess of the planet Sauria. He had only heard of this planet but didnt care to much to know anything about it. He studied the planet, locating and taking note of each section of large rock that hung i the planets atmospere. He didnt understand what was happening to Sauria, but then again his job wasnt to find out. His job was to kill anything that became a threat to the mission or team, which led him to his question."What kind of hostilities can we expect to encounter during the mission?"

Robert shakes his head at Eurydice's question. "Blowing up, we aren't totally sure. There hasn't been any violent seismic activity, aside from the expected earthquakes, but nothing to hint that it is literally exploding. Its just a theoretical outcome, one of many, and none of them good for Lylat."

He looked back to Renard. "I'm glad you asked. The chunks of the planet that have broken off are currently inaccessible. We've seen probes to try and get a closer look, but they collide with some sort of force field that prevents anything from getting too close. We've studied the planet itself, and determined the best insertion point...", Robert says, changing the hologram display of Sauria for a higher focus zoom, "is here, a clearing we call Thorntail Hollow. Evidence suggests one of the dinosaur tribal leaders has taken refuge here, so we hope to make contact. Jami is our foremost expert on Saurian culture and language, so she will be communicating for us."

"And yes, there will be a visit to the armory before departure, so you all can stock up on any weapons or armor you need. We've got you covered there."

Robert then looks to Ryan. "Well, we can't guarantee any of the Saurian natives will be receptive of us. However, several months before the crisis began, there was a war breaking out among the tribes", he explains as he once more changes the hologram display, now to an Earthwalker, a Cloudrunner and a Sharpclaw. "These three in particular. This one here, is called an 'Earthwalker'. And this here, a 'Cloudrunner'. They seem to have been the ruling tribes of Sauria, but these fellows here... the 'Sharpclaw' tribe, have been waging war against them both, and gradually winning. In past studies, they've always seemed to be nomadic and marauding, so we can expect at least them to be hostile. This is to say nothing of the wildlife or plants...", he says shaking his head. "It's a real doozy, that's for sure."

Amelia silently listened as Captain Monroe answered everyone's respective inquiries. She heard something about some of the chunks being inaccessible due to some force field, which made her do this confused looked that involved narrowing her eyes and raising her eyebrows. She wanted to think it was some sort of wierd magnetic field, but that didn't make any sense either. First of all, if that were the case, the planet would be some type of weird magnetar. For starters, it would rip apart everything this close to it with the magnetic field, and pull it in like a black hole. Hell, there wouldn't even be a living being in the solar system, as the strong and vast magnetic field would strip every nervous system of its electrons throughout the lylat system.

What the hell do I know? Amelia remembered back on the transport shuttle when Gene was talking about possible supernatural forces that go beyond science, and when he did that trick to her arm. She felt self conscious right now. Surely, that strawberry shortcake-ass wierdo had more answers than she did.

Okay, that wasn't nice... she said to herself, retracting her disdainful thoughts about him. I actually like him. He's cool. Then she started quietly laughing to herself at the image of her carrying him around in her big Burberry bag, similarly to how some socialite might do a toy poodle of a chihuahua.

But back to the point, he did open her mind to the possibilities. She was also reminded of the fact that, as a scientist, she really didn't have all the answers. It her responsibility to find, record, test, and present the information in a way that lets it speak for itself.

Biting her lip, she pondered, thinking that Captain Monroe must have seen something special in all of them, including herself, to select their dossiers out of hundreds, perhaps even thousands, and say "Yes, THEY have what it takes to do this."

"Captain, I have another question..." She looked at the recording device that she still held in her hand, musing on a way to euphemise what she often does with it. "...Would it be okay for me to, um, record my findings and other information through video and photography?"

Armory?...Expensive research facility?...CHAAACHIIIIIIIIIIING! Grinned Freyr with a slightly mischievous smile on his face.

"What kind of history does planet Sauria have with the rest of the ...'civilized'... galaxy?" Inquired Freyr, gears turning in his head. Perhaps if fortune shined even brighter, this was some Area 51-esque (assuming this reference is understood in the RP) scenario of the government trying to hide sensitive places from the public eye.

Wouldn't be the first time...They hid Kristache from us too until we found it. That was some cool stuff there...Maybe this shindig might not be so bad after all. Surely doesn't sound like it would be as hard as that misadventure of a lifetime - no Hunters to tail me this time hopefully. To involve the military would be to create a huge public nuisance of shifting resources and causing alarm. Makes me wonder what they plan on doing with us after its all said and done and we find out any secrets... But perhaps there is nothing at all on this planet, he did after all mention "tribes." They better hope I didn't come out here for nothing or i'll settle these disputes personally.

He Looked at Manthony. " I think he explained what we're to expect in terms of opposition when he went over the political state of the planet before the start of it's collapse." he said as he tapped his foot.

" Provided the planet's rather untouched state, and as the only clearly artificial structure is situated above the planet...." He thought a bit. " Really don't see these "Sharpclaws" or whatever they're called to be wielding anything more advanced than a bow and arrow, quite frankly."

He shook his head. " Of course, i could be wrong, so I wouldn't be surprised if having any ties at all to other worlds gave them anything remotely advanced."

He again noticed the others, jumping a little and bowing to the officers. "uhm... My apologies for speaking out of turn..."

Robert gave a short nod to Amelia's question. "Of course. You'll be allowed to document any findings we discover on the planet by any means you feel adequate. There's no red tape here. The government may fund this operation, but they're not the ones in charge, I am. Too much is at risk to worry about something as frivolous as dinosaur vids on the Net."

He then turned to Freyr again. "Saruia's society seems to be decidedly less advanced than the rest of Lylat, hence why we were observing them from space, to avoid altering the course of their natural history. As far as any of us know, none of the native populations have ever made contact with an alien race, so we're making history here by just landing on the planet."

The captain then turned to address Manthony and Renard. "Actually, we do have some understanding of where the Sharpclaw footholds are strongest, and where the resistance is tightest against them", he said as he changed the holo-display to that of Sauria again. Pointing to various parts of the world, he elaborated, "This strange architecture here (Krazoa Palace) seems to have been completely occupied by Sharpclaw forces. Another dense concentration is this valley (Moon Mountain Pass), and these mountain ranges", he continued, pointing to various parts of the planet. "As for the broken off chunks of the world, it is more difficult to say. Since the disaster began, we've been unable to trace changes in the war front. Those force fields give off a lot of interference."

"And yes, their technology level is rather low, but not to be underestimated all the same. They're very high middle ages, perhaps renaissance. Axes, clubs, plated sheet armor, crossbows... but do remember, these are DINOSAURS we're talking about. They're adapted to fighting with more than just weapons, but their bodies too. Even if they're primitive, they can still easily kill any of us if we are not careful. Do not let our tech advantage make you arrogant."

"Oh..." She figured that with the dinosaur videos on the net part, he already knew how she rolled? Then again, of course he did. There had to have been a background check on her so she could be a part of this whole thing. Past employment, criminal history, physical addresses, email addresses... And her email addresses would connect to her social networking pages, accounts on photo-streaming video-sharing sites, and her blog. She did think there would be a bunch of bureaucracy behind it, but now that she knew he didn't care, she felt a little silly for trying to bend the truth. But anyway, she was like, "Okay... Awesome!"

Ea's head started hurting like it did when she was injured. She never had the same focus she did before, and it was one thing she could not relearn. She tried her best to pay attention, but by the end she had no questions, but asking herself to simply process the information given.
