The City of New Orleans

Since we are getting close to Mardi Gras, I was wondering if anyone on this forum has been to New Orleans. I myself haven't. I have heard different things about it, and wonder what peoples opinion on it is good/bad etc.?

It's different, and heck if that makes 'em happy whatever. I look at Mardi Gras and my reaction to it is similar to that of the Chinese sweatshop workers I saw on a documentary that make the cheap beads that are chucked at women who flash their tits: THAT is the purpose of these gaudy things? Seriously? It just doesn't make much sense to me. New Orleans otherwise seems to have an interesting culture but my tiny view of it is through the lens of stereotypes. They helped make jazz though so heck, can't be all that bad.

My feelings on it are complicated. It has a very interesting culinary culture/ history. Because of the liberal policies of the original French colonists, it was probably one of the least racist places in the South! :-)

But it also seems a little sleazy and run down. Kind of like "Tortuga" from Pirates of the Carribean, or Mos Eisley from Star Wars. But heck Id like to go there some day

Judging a city's population based on an internationally famous festival is going to lead to a false judgement. Especially one that draws people from all over and involves a lot of drinking.

I'm no expert on New Orleans, but I imagine, like any large city, it has its nice places and its places where you don't want to be if you are not from there lest you get shot. I know it had a serious crime problem after Katrina (largely thanks to the economic damage), but I do not know how much that situation has improved. One would need to pull some data.

Okay, I only live a couple hours from there, so I've actually been there a few times, even during Mardi Gras.

And I'm going to preface this with flashing your tits at Mardi Gras is wrong and frowned upon by the locals, so don't use that to judge their culture. Other than that, it's like DZ says, there are some areas that look pretty destitute, just like there are areas that are built up well, like every other semi-large city in the US. The area near the Audubon Zoo is gorgeous, and the Zoo itself is well worth the visit. (Just make sure to eat before you get there, there IS a restaurant in the Zoo, but it's expensive.)

As far as pop culture references that might help you understand New Orleans a little better, Princess and the Frog was actually pretty good, even though it took place in the 20's a lot of the cultural references are still valid.

I'm going to end this post by saying King Cake is AWESOME. Always participate in Mardi Gras if you get the chance, it's fun. :D
