Aliens Colonial Marines. WTF Happened?!

Okay, if any of you own a Wii U, then obviously you've been looking at games to be coming out in the future, and one of the most hyped ones was Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Gearbox Software and the gaming press hyped the hell out of this game, and as I am also a big fan of the Alien series, (the first two movies being in my top 6 favorite movies of all time) I was really excited for this game. The demo looked great, the trailers were stellar, the set pieces looked like they were taken right out of the Cameron film. The stars were all aligned to give us the Alien experience we always wanted.

And then the reviews came in.

The game is being torn to shreds by the reviewing sites, and after seeing some gameplay footage I can see why.

I can only ask one thing. WTF HAPPENED?! And with the Wii U version being delayed to the very end of the launch window for the console, you can expect that the Wii U version is going to do horribly, and that means a very big dent to Wii U's game lineup.

However, I do have a small theory. There had to be a reason why the Wii U version was delayed. Gearbox had been boasting about how much they loved the Wii U, saying it was an amazing machine. Either they were lying about that just to keep the hype machine going, OR the Wii U version is actually going to be somehow drastically different and the 360/PS3/PC version was just rushed out.

But in the end, one can't help but wonder what exactly caused the game to flounder so spectacularly.

Makes me think the put wrong shit on the disks, and the wrong shit on the internet. The E3 demos were better then the final version.

Best review on the game below, IMO;

I wouldn't be surprised if Gearbox put its resources toward Borderlands 1 and 2 while rushing through Colonial Marines, or if those rumors of them outsourcing the work to another studio were true.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to this game and I never let reviews and all sway my decisions too much... but this is just too unanimous that it's horrible.  The game looked great a E3, before that, and after that. How is the real, full game so much different?

Really weird.

I was hoping this would be a good game, but my distrust of AAA titles held me back from pre purchasing.  It looks like it was a good choice, game seems even more broken than PS3 Skyrim.  Criken has some good videos of it (With 2 more coming soon) so I'll share em here.

Then there's this one, which I've made part of my daily viewing regimen.

Nah, they're not.

It's fascinating how I'd normally contribute a wall of text and various gifs and videos concerning these things but I'm actually so dumbfounded by this I can't bring myself to do anything, really.

I just laugh awkwardly with tears of absolute horror in my eyes.

This is my reaction:

It had so much promise, and so much hype.  They let us down big time.  However, you'll have some people *Cough*WAFFLES*Cough* who will deny everything that's wrong with the game no matter how BLATANTLY obvious it is.

I did not pre order the game due to my funds coming up a little short, and I am very thankful I didn't waste my money based on every review I've ever read and every gameplay video I've ever seen.

If you need me, I'll still be playing AvP 2010.

Nintendo fucked up. I hate to say it, but it is true. They've put the WiiU's launch in the hands of third parties, and are paying the price for that mistake. The 3rd parties didn't bring their best games. Most of them were ports. No real system-sellers.

And now both games that were to be the bridge over the launch window drought have failed to be the bridge. One was for stupid reasons (WTF, Ubisoft?), and one was for disappointment in the product.

I understand why they did it. They wanted to shed their image that Nintendo was anti-3rd party. But look where it has gotten them. Lip service support, loss of exclusives, and meaningless delays.

And then there was the outright disaster that was the marketing. Seriously, Nintendo. Fire your marketing department. Start over. People like to compare Nintendo to Apple. A big difference: Apple knows how to market shit. Apple could sell boots to a legless man. Nintendo couldn't convince people to buy bread during a famine.

We need some big-gun first party titles. It is now clear that Nintendo will not have a major advantage this generation. PS4 will be a decently powerful machine. And if the Jaguar CPU rumors are true about Xbox 3, then combine that with the Wii U's significantly lower specs, and 3rd parties have little incentive to publish for the platform, especially if there isn't an install base. Also, both will have multi-screen and social media support at launch, taking away the innovation advantage.

I'll be honest: Unless Nintendo starts producing hardware that can compare to the other systems, 3rd parties will not be all that interested. Because of this, Nintendo needs to rely on themselves if WiiU is to be a success. They've always been good at that.

And here I was about to put the link to that same review. Anyways, I was actually looking forward to this game. It looked interesting, and I did enjoy the movies (the second one mostly). I was planning on getting this game in the next couple weeks or so. But then I saw the Angry Joe review. What the hell did Gearbox do to drastically change this game for the worse?
