Dublinthefox
This afternoon, Sony revealed their next gaming plateform.........The PlayStation 4. From what they showed in the stream, the controller will have a share button that will allow the player to "put videos and screenshots of your game online." They also mentioned that you'll be able to download a game and while downloading it, be able to play it as well as being able to play PS4 games on the Vita. The only thing they showed off was the controller and it is scheduled to be released sometime around the holidays. I'm not really sure what to think of it. For one thing, they didn't show the console, just the controller.............Or..........is that it? DZComposer
x86? AMD? Wow.Jaguar CPU, eh? That's a tablet CPU, though it is a next-gen one that is not currently in anything on the market yet.Though the 8 Gigs of RAM is impressive for sure. While not a Sony fan, I am a bit of an AMD fan, even though I am using an Intel CPU at the moment. It is nice to see and AMD CPU getting a big score like PS4.I am also seeing rumors that the Xbox 3 will use a Jaguar CPU as well, but that obviously is as of yet unconfirmed. (But if it is true, really scares me when it comes to Wii U 3rd party support, which is already shaky.)Interestingly, while this thing will undoubtedly blow the Wii U out of the water in terms of raw computational power, it is along the lines I have expected, and why I still consider the Wii U to be a next gen system: Obviously the real power will be in the GPU, as it is with the Wii U. This design paradigm is using the GPU as a co-processor.As far as the GPU, though, I would be suprised if it is more than a RadeonHD 7000 series (2011's Radeons), which is consistent with the TFLOPS number, which was available even back on the R700 series. I just don't see the thing being affordable if it packs a $500 GPU. Next-gen can mean anything, but I'll be surprised if it is a Volcanic Islands (Next year's Radeons) series chip. This development also raises another question: Are the analysts right about game consoles? Will this be the last generation? This same CPU design is being used in tablets, and it was designed for them.I wonder how long it will take for someone to get Android running on a PS4...EDIT: I just realized they're saying it's 8GB of GDDR 5. Holy shit, that ain't gonna be cheap. Though I do know this: some of that will be reserved for the GPU.Also, it has begun on NeoGaf. People are calling Wii U dead in the water. As much as I want to disagree, I have to reserve judgement. Nintendo: We need games. Now. The launch window is closing, and there is nothing but drought. It isn't helpful that Ubisoft kicked Nintendo in the nuts. Rayman was my next WiiU game. Wii U's advantage was going to be the yearlong head-start and price. No doubt they'll hit the price, but without the games to build an install base, the double launch this fall will kneecap them.
Vy'drach
Wonder if Sony is going to utilize that 1 terabyte disc they developed when it comes to the PS4. Imagine games using that disc. Would be glorious.
IArmoredSnowWhiteI
Those presentations are always in the middle of the night here... but it sure was worth watching! Only one thing I need to know that make me go nuts about it. Will these be hard copies too?
Fire Yoshi
I'm glad to see that they're putting PC-like hardware into this thing. It's comforting to know that it will perform well. But of course, big hardware comes to a big price. 400 US dollars is expensive.
CrypticQuery
I'm glad to see that they're putting PC-like hardware into this thing. It's comforting to know that it will perform well. But of course, big hardware comes to a big price. 400 US dollars is expensive. While it is expensive, considering the PS3, a 7-year old piece of hardware, is still retailing for $300 in most places it can be reasonable. I am rather excited for the PS4, but it will all come down to launch titles, pricepoint, and developer support. I do love Sony's exclusives [as evident by my signature], however. The new controller was incredibly interesting, though I am curious to see how the move-sensor light at the top will interact with the camera bar they showed; it will undoubtedly be an improvement from the underused sixaxis. Dr. Orange
Oh look a new computer... wait... is that the new PS4? Oh Sony trying to make computers now. I'm so proud.
CrypticQuery
Oh look a new computer... wait... is that the new PS4? Oh Sony trying to make computers now. I'm so proud. I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at there; are you referring to the PS4 being more or less a PC with a custom OS? That is more or less what both the 360 and PS3 were; I assume that should be expected nowadays.
Dublinthefox
The only thing that disappointing me was hearing about this. Mostly the PSN part: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/02/21/report_3a00_-psn-games-and-other-data-won_2700_t-transfer-to-ps4.aspx
Steve
The price is just an estimation I believe, having an equivalent horsepower of an HD6970 with 8gb grdd5 is itself extremely pricey, add other costs and really, the math doesn't add. The real question is, is sony really ready to sell the system at a loss?, if they do, it's going to have a really nice head start. Like DZ, I'm no fan of Sony, but if they do offer that kind of power on a console and they do offer it at a 450ish price, yeah, it's going to be a really nice start for the PS4 and really bad news for Nintendo. DZComposer
Sony has taken loss leads on all of its consoles, but, then, Sony wasn't in financial trouble then like they are now.Jaguar will keep the price down, but 8GB of GDDR5 will not.I find $400 to be optimistic, and if that is the price point, I will fear for the WiiU because for $50 than a WiiU deluxe you'd get a significantly more powerful system. I think it would force a Wii U price drop. I find $450-$500 to probably be the price point for the base model, with $550-700 the price point for the premium model. As far as PSN games, it comes down to CPU architecture. Cell is a much different architecture than x86. I highly expect that the PS4 won't be able to emulate a PS3. The Cell is too different.
Icy
I'm really excited for PS4. The presentation did nothing but increase my excitement. I hope it's not too pricey, I hope developers can tap into its power, I hope Microsoft stops being lazy and gets a new console up too so devs will not be forced to put crappy 360 ports onto the PS4... Most of all, I hope Nintendo can outrun Sony's exclusives with theirs this year. I expect Nintendo to release Smash, Mario Kart, and 3D Mario later this year. I also expect them to announce some first-party games (Retro's, for one), before, during, or after E3, and release a few of them this year as well. Sony? Probably a few first-party PS4 games, but that's it. Same for Microsoft. If Nintendo gets back their fans and/or brings in new fans with a bunch of exclusives later this year, I don't think they'll be in any trouble at all. PS4 will be expensive, it won't kick in for a bit because people will still think their PS3s are quite capable, and you can bet on it that Sony isn't going to abandon the PS3, either. They said 10 years, it's gonna get 10 years of support. As much as you hear about people wanting POWERR on their consoles, the PS4's power won't sell it. Games will. Let's see how that goes. I'm a big Sony fan, even bigger Nintendo fan, and neither of them are in trouble IMO. Both companies have great games, ideas, etc, and I'm excited for the future of Wii U and PS4. Microsoft? Funny joke. Only thing that would make me buy their new console would be a new Hydro Thunder game. I hate that they own that IP.. Also, while I'm mocking M$, did anyone else find it hilariously funny to watch Bungie, Microsoft's super loved studio that made games exclusive to 360 for years... up on a Sony stage, praising them? Giving them exclusive stuff, etc. Glorious.
manthony_Higgs
Oh god, can you imagine a fully realized WipEout game on the PS4? I would buy nine systems just for that.
