Why does this place's management suck so much?

Milkyway64

Question

So I saw this little section of the forum and brainstormed for questions to ask you guys.  I then immediately stopped, because there's very little I'd ask anyone here that I have not already gotten an answer from on Steam or Skype.

But then, I got it. My question became clear, why does this place blow so much ass?

See, some of you folks are cool and you know it, and the rest, if not being total idiots, are idiots in disguise. Disappointment is a recurring theme since a year or two ago around this place, from the TF2 server, to the counterpoint, to even the staffing. DZ is cool, he's a successful dude with a smexy voice and a set of talents to match his usually generous disposition. And no, this is not ass kissing, it's a brief list of positive qualities to offset the rest of you nerds who either up and poofed, don't do a singular thing anywhere, and have no sense of the law.

Much like a cop who does nothing but sit and work a speed trap, most of you have nothing better to do than wear the badge and share donuts while on the job and thus are out of shape to actually chase anyone down. It makes you look like lazy assholes. A good number of counterpoint topics and some others (most notably the pony thread, more on that soon) are rather unmonitored and anyone can get away with about anything until shit REALLY gets bad, at which point you butts deal with it with all the energy of a kid replying "Do I HAVE to...?" in response to their mother's order to mow the lawn.

It's bullshit. I remember, before everyone stopped caring, that backhands were thrown at any brat who deserved it. If someone stepped out of line where said line was clearly marked, the staff stepped in, laid down the law, and then it was over. None of this "Guys, take it to PM and keep it civil, or we might have to lock this topic...!" treatment that then follows with a lock that stops everyone else from contributing. You have to nip this shit in the bud. I'm taking great lengths not to mention any NAMES, but in the -past,- when an overtly arrogant asshole nobody could stand started shitting all over threads and then making new ones to keep tooting their self righteous horns when told to stop started up, he was temp banned right on the spot. Bam. No bullshit, just raw, hard justice that kept the forums free and didn't leave room for things to crop right up again.

It's a damn shame to see the gradual pussification of how things are handled these days. When I stepped out of line, nobody fucked around. They did what any reasonable enforcement system did and slapped me on the wrist, told me to cut that shit out, and sent me to the slammer for a week or two so things could cool off. I know our main force are indeed as into each other as Team Rocket's Jesse and James, but that doesn't mean they have to be as (non)threatening as they are.

Harder restrictions and punishments eh? I like the sound of this.

I, too, have noticed the time between the problem and when the reaction and response of the mods came. They should be looking over out shoulders and ready to respond on the spot.

And when people step out of line, ban, right then and there. No warning. They should know the rules right? And maybe no opinions or arguing outside the Counter-Point... or at all. That'll keep the peace! Scratch that, lets ban everyone who has ever stepped out of line and anyone who is a threat to this Forum.

But wait...

This somewhat sounds too totalitarian. And we all know from history class that that style doesn't run. And most of the mods here still don't fuck around and take things seriously.

Listen, I agree that recently some stuff went down and security needed to be beefed up. Yet, a one verbal warning rule is a more sane approach than a autoban.

At least we have mods where the forum is looked over almost all points of the day.

It's because we took Prayer out of Forum Topics.

Of course I've noticed that things are a little more lax than previous times were, but that's not an entirely bad thing.  I'd love to see more mods active at more times of the day, but I have seen moderation going on, topics being moved, like just a few days ago, and making sure there's no strife between members.  I haven't seen much tension between people, but then again, I try to not look around at things outside my pay grade.  They're doing something at least though.  The ones that are active.

I haven't seen some people who wear the badge in a while, though.  That's the point Milky has brought up that I would say I agree with most.

To be honest we need a more comprehensive system. Our path is clear.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from, Milky, and I commend your ability to voice your opinion regardless of others possibly taking offense.  The thing is, I don't think this forum necessitates a hyper-oppressive regime in which a single step out of line is met with four-thousand years of back-breaking labor untangling ethernet cords in a server host headquarters, or something of the sort.  The arguments that do crop up and eventually end up in a rather large blow-up are dealt with and are, for the most part, rare.

I do admit, however, that we, as a moderation team, could definitely improve on policing the Counter Point and being active in general.  You undoubtedly have a valid point there, and I won't beat around the bush with it.

You're basically saying that over something as basic as a mis-phrased post, you should be banned? For most internet forums, the standards here are already pretty high. Simply by reading the content here alone, one can get a sense that to so much as even survive on this site, you've got to act at your best already.

Personally, I don't see a purpose to this.

I did not imply that the smallest offense should deserve a ban. I implied that people can get away with far too much at almost no consequence, and a lot of the fault for this is the practically nonexistent staff given that most of the names there are inactive or completely lazy.

Sometimes this place blows because of the assholes in it that are members, not just staff. Milky, you are hardly one to judge others when you yourself are known to be a douche. And if your Team Rocket reference is regarding R3d and I, then fuck you man. At least our kicks don't come from trolling, RPing, or whatever it is you do to pass your massive amount of freetime. We do our jobs, but we're compassionate about it. You want stricter stuff? You don't even know what's going on in private - I don't put everything out in the forums for all to see.

You come here when you smell drama, and you're here to escalate it. If anyone isn't happy with SFO, then they can leave, plain and simple. The people bothered  the most are the ones that are troublemakers anyway.

Regarding inactive staff, who is this exactly? Me? Lol. R3d? Nope. Crazy? Nah. Steve? I don't believe so. Sissi? No, she was online this week and last night. User? Also logged on this week. sroberson is no longer a mod. DZ has also logged on this week.

Now I understand that you want Red to be around to look after you all the time, and God bless you. But Red is trying to graduate this year and also has a job, okay?

We aren't psychics who can sense trouble. There is a report function, so if anyone sees bullshit, then REPORT IT instead of bawing like a baby about how your mommy mods aren't running around after you.

Okay Milky, you can brush your tear away now. I know it must hurt.

I'm sorry to see how you are mentally traumatized by the actions against your from way back then but being all out aggressive is probably not gonna give you the comfort you need.

Lololocked.

I agree with Milky a bit, though I'll be frank: You've been part of the problem.

I have instructed the staff to make some changes.

Also, I'm in a foul mood right now so that makes me mor likely to make an example out of someone. My banhammer arm is ready. I highly advise those of you who have gotten involved in drama to re-evaluate how important this community is to you.

This is the warning here: Take a shit on a staff member (or anyone else), and the weather in your area is:
