As of recently I've been taking a break from tokusatsu shows and got back into watching anime again. I was reminded of a series that I haven't watched in almost a decade and decided to rewatch again.

Who here remembers this......interesting classic?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JeOlQFNjv0

It wasn't until I became a fan of Kamen Rider that this series had the same creator, Shotaro Ishinomori, who was also the creator of the Super Sentai series (Power Rangers). From what I've seen, Ishinomori.....really likes using cyborg humans fighting against terrorists as the theme of his stories. (Basically the entire Showa era for Kamen Rider)

I also was lucky recently to find the complete series of Trigun.....but it wasn't for a small fee though.  :hehe:

Anime is indeed pricey for some strange reason. Would love, love, love to own the entire Gundam Wing series, but last time I checked it was over $200.

I don't know what you've seen, but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Puella Magi Madoka Magica are amazing.

Anime is indeed pricey for some strange reason. Would love, love, love to own the entire Gundam Wing series, but last time I checked it was over $200.

It's even worse if the anime was released by the company Aniplex. It's not normal for anime to be around 200 dollars, at least not in the United States. They tend to range from 30 to 60 dollars. Aniplex, however, regularly releases its shows at prices around 150 or 300 dollars (Bakemonogatari, a 15 episode anime, and Fate/Zero, respectively). While Japan normally has high prices, that company is releasing a Bluray in Japan for the low low price of 500 dollars.

Meanwhile, Funimation releases the 26 episode anime Casshern Sins for 25 dollars and the 26 episode anime Tenchi Muyo GXP for 15 dollars.

Gundam Wing is out of print, so such high prices aren't insane, considering how hard it is to find a new copy of the show.

In other news, I'm thinking about buying some anime. I'm having a hard time deciding between the following:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Durarara!!

Deadman Wonderland

Spice and Wolf

Tenchi Muyo OVA Collection

...and I'm also kind of wanting Kimba the White Lion.

Tenchi Muyo or I will come over to your house, and I will cut you.

You obviously only say that because you haven't watched Madoka and thus don't realize its glory.

Madoka Magica > all.

I've seen all of Madoka though. Plus Madoka is expensive. I want it in limited edition. It'd cost me 210 dollars. Tenchi  Muyo OVAs 1 and 2 I have not seen. The OVA Collection comes with those, and I saw the first episode of the 1st OVA, and it was great. I've been wanting somethin Tenchi in my collection for a while. Plus the OVA Collection is about 50 dollars.

EDIT:

Kimba the White Lion is low priority for me, but the art looks so beautiful...

You can't go wrong with Muyo or Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo was a bit meh but had it's moments for me, but I did not care for Galaxy Police one bit, I tell you what.

I want them all anyway. Even the new Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar. I've been watching Galaxy Police, and I love it. But I also know that its absolutely awful, with a horrible dub, a lot of weird perverted moments, and a lack of seriousness or story. But I still like it. Still, the original OVA I want most. Then either GXP or Ryo-Ohki (as far as dvd sets go, the ryo-ohki set is the 3rd ova).

Is anyone planning on seeing any anime movies? There's one that's supposed to come out in America this year that I really want to see. It's from the makers of Summer Wars:

Just from this trailer, I can already tell this should be a great movie.

I actually bought Summer Wars on DVD today! I love it. And I'm definitely excited about Wolf Children. I've been obsessing about it over the past few days. The movie is already well recieved.

Other anime movie related news:

From Up On Poppy Hill, a Studio Ghibli film like Ponyo and Spirited Away, is in theaters now, I believe.

Other news:

IGPX will begin airing on Toonami April 27, probably replacing one of the Cowboy Bebop slots on the lineup.

I've never seen IGPX.

Yeah, that's what I heard. I hope Wolf Children comes out soon this year. I really want to see it. It looks to have a great and heart warming story. Plus, people becoming wolves? Already my interest got peaked at that. And it asked the question that is my biggest pet peeve. Why are wolves always depicted as evil monsters? Both of these are already great reasons for me to see it.

I didn't even know wolves were depicted as evil monsters. My memory of wolves in media includes Wolf Link from Zelda games and drawings of wolves looking cool howling at the moon or twilight movies or furry art, though. So I don't usually see wolves as bad. Usually I just think of honorable lonely creatures that look really cool.

And then I remember the big bad wolf.

I'm actually worried Wolf Children won't be dubbed. I haven't seen any announcement by funimation saying its going to be dubbed, as far as I can remember. I like dubs. :/

Oh, it's more than just the big bad wolf. The Boy Who Cried Wolf, all the werewolf movies, the wolves in the first Chronicles of Narnia movie, the wolf enemies you face in almost every RPG in existence, I could go on. I think of wolves as the most beautiful creatures in the world. They care deeply about family, always traveling in packs and willing to starve just so they can feed their pups.

Back onto the topic of the movie, I am worried about that too. I'm most use to dubs, especially when it comes to movies. The visuals looks too good for me to waste all my time reading subtitles.

Hmm....I didn't really realize wolves were thought of as bad guys. I'm glad this movie asks this question then.

Funimation dubs a lot of things, and this is a big movie, and Summer Wars was dubbed, so I would think that they'd dub it. But with no announcements I've heard of, this strikes me as odd.

And yes, the movie looks amazing, and I want to be able to take in the art to the fullest too.

Unrelated:

My Summer Wars DVD looks awful on widescreen televisions. :/

They've been looked upon as bad guys for as long as they existed.

Funimation is most likely still dubbing it. They just wanted to get the word out that they're bringing it here.

I don't think it's that wolves are considered bad guys so much as they tend to be associated with certain characteristics, and depending on the themes of the work and the moral stances of the main characters, they tend to fall either in favor with them or against them. You have shit like in Narnia, where the wolves' cunning and shit is played up as a foil to Aslan the lion, who embodies valor and such. Then, you have stuff like Spice and Wolf, where the main character is a guy whose entire living is made by being quick-witted and clever, so those same characteristics are cast in a good light.

In my personal experience, wolves aren't typecast as specifically good OR evil, so much as just being made a protagonist or an antagonist because of where they stand in relation to the other characters. That said, my experience is just my experience, and is indeed terribly flawed, but meh.

They were in the first movie. They served the main antagonist with orders to kill the four kids.

Well most of the time, they tend to fall against the main characters. They have been shown as allies in some forms of media (Spice and Wolf, Princess Mononoke, Bleach, Hoodwinked and, ugh, I really don't want to use this one as an example but, the Twilight saga T_T), but more often than not, they're the villains.

I think we've derailed this topic quite enough with my argument about wolves. Let's get back to what it was originally created for. Our love for anime.

I can't remember the last I anime I watched, I think it was Samurai Shamploo and One Piece. From what I saw it was okay, but since I don't watch much in the way of anime i don't know. Does anyone have any suggestions since I'm practically new to this?

If you're looking for an amazing story, the two anime I recommend over all else are Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Madoka is shorter, at 12 episodes, and has the tighter storytelling, but is considerably lighter on the action than Gurren Lagann, which is 26 episodes and almost never isn't a badass action scene. They're by far my two favorite anime of all time, and no matter what I recommend you watch them both.

Moving away from those two, there's a lot of great ones. If you want a lot of cool action, try:

  • Yu Yu Hakusho
  • Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Soul Eater
  • Durarara
  • Ben-To
  • Accel World

If you want one with less focus on action and more on developing a story, try:

  • Death Note
  • Spice and Wolf
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  • Angel Beats
  • Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
  • Gosick
  • Dantalian no Shoka

And of course, those aren't in any particular order. I just ran down my list and pulled them as I saw them. That's also not to say that the ones I listed as action-y don't have good stories, or the story-focused ones can't have action. I just tried to roughly separate them into two categories.

I know it's a hella big list I just gave, but I find it literally impossible to just recommend one or two at a time. I keep wanting to add more.

I also think I'll save this reply so I can copypasta it in the future, since I find myself having to make it quite a bit XD
