What's next for Nintendo?

I'd say Nintendo's been pretty quiet lately, and while there have been a few releases, nothing huge. I wouldn't say the Wii U or the 3DS are doing as well as they planned either. Could they possibly fall further behind, or will they be able to come up with something to bring them back up to the top again?

Miyamoto ain't retiring, Iwata won't, and Nintendo's in no trouble.

They'll keep making cool games and I'll keep buying them. ;)

The WiiU was a bit of a misstep, but they have so many little studios under their belt that I doubt Nintendo's going anywhere soon.

They may have studios, but that's not a money maker if nobody's buying the games.

Well it's a good thing most all of their games sell well, isn't it?

Even if he isn't now, he will eventually and Iwata had plans earlier to resign if 2013 goals weren't met.

I believe Nintendo should have waited to release the wii U and pack it with a little bit more future proof hardware. After all, we really don't have such a huge library of games for the Wii U yet, just a couple to be worth the mention.

All the good stuff is coming after the E3 this year, tho.

All the game companies are releasing game devices too soon with few good games for the console to start out.

I don't even know why we need new game consoles. I miss the good ole' PS2 where good games came out all the time and the device was popular for a very, very long time.

Them releasing the Wii-U without a new Zelda title to go with it was a huge mistake. The only reason hardcore gamers bought the wii the first time around was because Twilight Princess was out and they wanted to play it on the Wii. The demographic that bought the Wii doesn't want the Wii-U because they are just fine doing their workouts and playing with their grandkids on the Wii.

They've released a Mario title, now they need to start shoving out the names that have carried them for so long. Get a Zelda title out, get a Star Fox game out, Get a new SSB out, get a new Mario Kart out. That's when the money will start adding up.

   My prediction:

   More backward ass decisions!

Another Super Mario game, a Legend of Zelda game that takes place in outer space (they're running out of ideas, it will happen eventually), F-Zero, Fire Emblem, and just to annoy the hell out of the Starfox fans they'll resurrect Balloon Guy. Why? Because Nintendo is a backward ass in every respect! Balloon Guy has been on the shelf and Nintendo WILL make a new game and completely bypass one of its important and revolutionary franchises. Starfox brought us into the 3D graphic age with the FX chip and th-that was nothing?!!. GAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Nintendo is not in as big of trouble as people think. Yeah, I've seen all the image macros of the Wii U gamepad with the Dreamcast logo on the screen.

But Nintendo of 2013 is not Sega of 1999:

-> The Dreamcast was third in a line of failures

-> Sega had no successful handheld

-> Sega had been trending into financial troubles for a few years

-> Nintendo has enough cash on hand to survive about 20 fiscal years of consecutive losses.

-> FY2012 was Nintendo's only year of loss since its IPO.

-> The 3DS is the dominant handheld

-> 3DS has been profitable for over a year now

-> Wii U's loss lead was small enough that 1 game sale would turn it black. This means the Wii U will probably hit hardware profitability in a few months.

-> Nintendo's business fundamentals are strong

Sega was in deep shit. Their choices were:

1. Completely restructure from the core business plan down

2. Go out of business

Nintendo is not in deep shit. Wii U could be an epic disaster and Nintendo could survive it.

That said, I think there are some potential vision issues at Nintendo, but I do not think the company is really in any kind of trouble.

That doesn't mean that Wii U doesn't have its problems, though. I think Nintendo made two big mistakes and one moderately big mistage with the Wii U:

1. They kept the Wii brand on it. The casual market is pretty much done for consoles. As mobile devices become more and more prevalent and powerful, consoles will become niche devices that ONLY "core" gamers will buy.

2. Nintendo put most of their launch eggs in the 3rd party basket. The third parties have turned around and backstabbed Nintendo like a clever YER Spy. Loss of exclusives, ports of year-old games, arbitrary delays of important drought-bridging games, EA's Nintendo Network/Origin Butthurt Tantrum, and games that did not live up to their hype. With no strong first party titles to pick up the slack, system sales have been sluggish. With the rumors of Xbox 3 being X56-based, and PS4 confirmed to be, that leaves Wii U as the only POWER-based system, which adds further disincentive for multiplats to port to Wii U.

3. Too much price point focus. Allowing an extra $50 in price probably could have allowed a faster CPU and perhaps another 2GB of RAM. This would have future-proofed the console a bit.

Will the Wii U be a failure?

I think that depends upon how you define failure. It most definitely won't top the PS4 or Xbox 3 in the minds of the core gamers. Such gamers declared WiiU dead before Sony's PS4 announcement was even finished.

Will it recoup its R&D costs and make some profit by the end?

I think so. Especially if Nintendo brings their A game when it comes to software. So far they haven't but the console is young and there is time. Though there isn't much time. I really hope we're going to hear some stuff at E3 about what Nintendo's Q4 software plans are. There are some AAA multiplats and the PS4 and Xbox 3 to contend with in that period.

So, to recap, Nintendo can salvage the slump, but even if they don't, a Wii U failure won't force the, to "Go Sega" as Nintendo is not really in trouble as a company.

Another thing that not only Nintendo is doing wrong, is its reluctance of opening up. If Nintendo would make their sdk available for download, and either reduce license fee or just flush them, that would most likely attract some positive attention. All the other console manufacturers have been complete dicks with non AAA developers, with Sony taking the palm by far (hardware DRMs, and temper proof hardware, also flushing linux in an update when people were actually using it [ Sony is a member of the RIAA and their umbrella organizations, and it shows ! ] ).

I really think if they'd do a kind gesture to these devs, they'd get something in return. But that's my opinion..

And besides, getting double crossed by EA is probably much worse than opening up your business :troll:
