PS2 Networking

Snys93

Question

A group of my friends in town wanted to have a Star Wars Battlefront 2 fest. The problem is we're not too sure how to network them, since using an ethernet cord clearly wasn't enough. Plus we only have a newer slim and an old fat and I don't think they are compatible. Can someone help me?

How do I network slim and fat PS2s? Do I need a router for it?

Define what you mean by "Network." Trying to do a LAN or just get them all on the internet?

If you're trying to LAN without a switch or router, you may need a crossover cable. If you have a switch or router with a built-in switch (will have more than 1 ethernet port).

One basic rule of networking is that devices on different networks cannot talk to each other without a router in between. Best thing to do for LAN play is to set-up static IP addresses.

It works by using an IP Address and a Subnet Mask (sometimes just netmask). I like to advice people setup game console LANs using the Class B Private Address range, which is 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255. Reason is Class C (192.158.0.0-192.168.255.255) is often used by home routers, and Class A (10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255) is also possibly used.

What we're going to do is use a Class B address with a Class C subnet mask:

Example Network:

Machine 1:

IP: 172.25.0.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Machine 2:

IP: 172.25.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

EDIT: I BRING NETWORK DIAGRAMS!

I meant just linking them together so both devices communicate during gameplay. Star Wars Battlefront 2 on PS2 is only two players and I though by just networking two PS2s together it would make it a four player game on two TVs, much like a Halo Party before Xbox Live.

Unless the game explicitly supports LAN games, you can't do that. If it has online play capabilities you might be able to use whatever matchmaking service PS2 uses for online games so long as you have an Internet connected router to connect the two machines to, and then just have everyone join the same lobby/game.

And even with games that support LAN play, you need either a router to connect them to, or a crossover cable like DZ suggested.
