The Television Thread!

There's a general movie thread, so why not a general television thread?

This is the thread to talk about television, as you'd imagine. For things you wanna say or discuss, but that aren't quite ready for their own topics.

So let's start off...what are your favourite tv shows? Looking for something interesting to watch?

Me, my favourite show of all time is The X-Files. It kinda jumped the shark after season five but hey, it had a great atmosphere and the standalone episodes had brilliant writing ranging from terrifying to downright hilarious. The acting was stellar and had the perfect blend of character development woven into the creepyfactor, something much appreciated on both regards. I could honestly talk about TXF all day so don't tempt me.

I just finished watching Carnivale. It was a slow-paced, short-lived series from HBO about a dustbowl-era carnival and the weird stuff that happens around it. I liked it; it LOOKED gorgeous and some of the characters were brilliant, but I'm kind of glad it ended after two seasons, I don't think they could have carried it on much longer after that. Check it out if you like atmospheric, ambiguous shows, but you might want to skip it if you like action.

I'm about to start watching American Horror Story tonight. I know literally nothing about this show other than that it's creepy so hey why not? I'll probably talk about it a bit more once I've watched a few episodes so let's see!

I watch mostly anime and cartoons, whether its on TV or not, but for things that aren't anime or cartoons, my favorite things to watch are The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, and Dr. Who.

The Big Bang Theory is a nice fun comedy with a lot of nerdy references and jokes, which is great for people like me who are nerdy and can get a lot of those jokes and such.

The Walking Dead is a nice fun zombie show with a lot of drama, but after the first season I kind of fizzled out of watching it. Perhaps someday I'll catch up. The action is nice and a lot of the drama is very believable.

And Dr. Who is a very, very fun British scifi show that also has some drama every now and then, but I love that its filled with adventure. I haven't watched too much of it either, and when it first started airing in the early 2000s it seemed very low budget, looking like a scifi original type bad budget, but it still did well with great writing.

And yes, I know that Dr. Who actually originally started airing decades ago, but I'm not familiar with the old Dr. Who.

EDIT:

I've heard of American Horror Story, and it's pretty popular it seems. I'm guessing its a pretty good show.

I have to say one of favorite shows of all time is Star Trek TOS. For all its plywood sets and its "Goes Nowhere Does Nothing" pipes in the backround, this ambitious series with its clever plots and philosophy was ahead of its time. Its really a shame it was cancelled after three seasons, but only a foretaste of what was to come.

As many of you know judging from my failed thread in the Picture House, the Battlestar Galactica re-imagined series runs in as a close second. This adult scifi pulled all the stops a with gripping story, intense action and humanities epic struggle for survival against the machines (Cylons) they created. Unlike other scifi series' BSG's characters could be written or killed off at anytime, heightening the level tension and drama. A must see.

Doctor Who is by far the best and longest running scifi series ever! It is in my category, undisputed and if the series keeps getting better I might even shelf Star Trek from being fav 1 on my list.

I'm actually not very open to new shows. I don't watch a new show if there is no reason for it (like other people saying it's more than worth watching). Of course I like all the standard stuff.

Lots of cartoons. Well not lots, basically Spongebob back when it was great, I love Butch Hartman's cartoons. Can't wait for the next series of T.U.F.F. Puppy (sue me). And of course, the Seth McFarlane cartoons. To be honest, they don't have as many jokes, but the quality of said gags along with the randomness make me easily prefer them to the Simpsons or Futurama.

And for another cartoon, I like Phineas and Ferb a lot. It's got the exactly right kind of humour.

Then there'd be TPoM. In the aftermath, before I found out, I'd never figured it was full of brony refs. I didn't even know what bronies or MLP was, when TPoM was new to me.

Years ago, I used to watch CSI, both Miami and Vegas, but when CSI:Depression started airing, I gradually stopped watching all these shows altogether.

For srs face shows, there isn't very much I like. The only serious show I bother watching is Dexter. I won't go into detail with that one though.

Everyone wants to convince me to watch this Game of Thrones thing. I don't know. I did promise a friend of mine to watch an episode of it. But beyond that, I won't at all. I hate serious fantasy settings. Actually, I hate everything that tries to refrain from being silly. (On second thought, I think the Grumpy Cat would be a more suitable Avatar for me than Brannigan)

Ah, forgot the standard sitcoms: The Big Bang Theory and How I Met your Mother.  About the first of them: No matter how I try (I have friends  who like it), I always considered 2 1/2 Men a downright awful show. No other way to describe it. I never would have guessed that the people who made that were capable of making a show that is genuinely good. And the references they make in TBBT...I'm often really amazed at how accurate and specific they tend to be.

And then of course there's DW. I'm an absolute DW fan, because the format is pretty much the best for a TV show I can think of. Took really long until I realized how great it is though. That's basically, because my father initially tried to interest me for it. But the old TV show..at least the early bits of it...was...so...terrible. I keep remembering the very first episode. Why would I want to spend one and a half hours watching cavemen talking about how to convince the stranger (the doctor) to make fire? Maybe I'll bother watching some of the old ones later on, but only if I can get my hands on them.

Ah, completely forgot about that. I liked Stargate a lot. At least SG1 and Atlantis. It was kinda the same for me as with CSI, when Stargate:WorseAndWorse started airing. Yes, even the last two series of SG1, as much as I liked Farscape. I liked Farscape even more, to be honest. It's really a pity they broke it off and just rushed the end in one big film.

And in case that question pops up: Yes, I watched an entire episode of Firefly. I hated it.

Yes, I'd say that pretty much sums me up TV-show-wise, except for stuff I liked when I was younger. It's a pity not all childrens' series rearrange themselves to appeal to their original (and aging) fanbase.

Hogan's Heroes is the best TV show of all time IMO, and if anyone hasn't watched it and has a good sense of humor, you're seriously missing a lot of laughs. I've seen every episode 10+ times. Some more like 50 times. Completely honest.

They just don't make things like that anymore.

Another awesome TV show is The A-Team. I've seen every episode of that one too, probably a good few times. It's just so over the top and hilarious.

I also loved Lost, and am currently only following The Walking Dead and Sherlock.

....some MLP too, but not very seriously.

I keep getting recommendations for Supernatural, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Dexter, etc. I don't know if I have time to get into any more shows, though. They eat up a lot of time if you have to catch up on them..

Oh another thing about the walking dead. I use to live in Georgia. And it's nice to see the scenery and such. Although its shot in mostly small towns and places I've only passed through I still can recognize the land scape and it fills me with pride that my own home state stages center for the zombie apocalypse....

No, but it is a thread to talk about your favourite TV shows. The 50th Anniversary is relevant to my interests as one of my favourite shows, but now we have a Who thread, so we can talk there about it. :3

Okay I finished the first season of American Horror Story.

I'm going to write a more fleshed-out review but

Let's just say it would have been a really great black comedy. It wasn't, it was played completely seriously, and it did not work at aaaaall. Disappoint. But apparently season 2 (Asylum) is far superior so we'll see.

I will admit that I haven't been watching as much television as I used to, though I never really followed any schedule for showtimes of a particular show.  The only two shows that I have watched somewhat consistently are Top Gear UK and COPS.

Thought I'd share this [somewhat NSFW] clip from an earlier episode of COPS.  You can't make this stuff up. O_o

COPS is one of my favorite shows, EVER. Laying the whoopass on thugs and lowlifes. Epic crime-fighting without the aid of Batman or Superman.

Whenever people bitch about how harsh the police are here, I show them this vid.

Also, look what my dad bought me when I was sick. When he said Spiderman, I thought he meant...you know...the Amazing Spiderman series from the 90's. Turns out I was SO wrong.

Glad to see that I'm not the only hardcore COPS fan around here.  The 25th season has been great so far! :P - And congrats on that 60s Spiderman DVD; I imagine while the animation will be horrid, it can easily garner a few laughs with the aid of this macro gallery; http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/60s-spider-man/photos

I'm not really sure I have an all-time favorite TV show. There are quite a few I like and love, but I can't really name them all off at the moment. However, one of my absolute favorite types of TV shows from when I was a kid were the robot combat shows. Battlebots, Robotica, Robot Wars, I watched all of them and never wanted to miss a single episode. They actually inspire me to create my own robot and take it to these competitions (though I haven't since I don't have the technical know-how).

Sadly, all three of those shows completely disappeared from TV. Today we have SyFy's Robot Combat League, and while the fights are somewhat entertaining to watch, they aren't as much fun to watch as the wheeled robots with sawblades, pincers, flamethrowers, and crushing claws. it is sadly just another stupid reality TV competition show. The competitors didn't even build the bots themselves, they were just assigned bots built by another guy. It is nice to see WWE wrestler Chris Jericho as the host, but that's just a gimmick to get a bigger crowd in.

Has anyone here watched Lexx? I've started watching it on Netflix and I like it. Wish I knew about this when it came out in 1997.

Started watching Supernatural again. I dropped off around the beginning of Season 2 for some reason and now I'm just past the beginning of Season 4 and presently watching the black-and-white Bavarian vampire episode and laughing. Fandom is scary as hell, but the show is just dudes punching ghosts and it's great at doing that, and a lot of fun in general. There's the occasional plothole but honestly it's definitely one of the better scifi/horror/fantasy shows on television right now.

Lately I've been watching BBC reruns and run across The Black Adder. If you haven't seen it and if you like British humor, its a treat.
