Assault's Multiplayer. Could online have been good?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I thought that Assault's multiplayer to be quite fun. I used to have buddies over to my house when I was a young tyke, and we would spend a lot of time blasting each other in the Landmaster and Arwings, mainly on Corneria or Katina. Once in a while I'll play against friends and still find the game to be quite fun.

But there's one thing I noticed, some of the levels are gigantic, Fichina, Titania, and Corneria being the biggest. Sometimes that's just too big for a 4 player on foot match, though in the Arwings it's not that bad.

Even though online and LAN support for the GameCube had been abandoned long before Assault came out, the GameCube was still capable of it. Also, Assault was originally intended to be multiplayer only.

This makes me think, does anyone here think that Assault's multiplayer would have benefitted from having LAN or online play? The different game modes in the multiplayer would have been nice in an online environment if you ask me.

While you do maake valid points on the subject of maps and Assault's origins as an Mplayer game...

Aassault's "fun" value stems almost entirely from its party-style design. It was NOT competitively designed or well balanced, and most of the fun that I had from the game wasn't actually playing the multiplayer, but from the laughs and joys that were had sitting on a couch with my three siblings and goofing off. Online removes that personable aspect of multiplayer, which is a shame because its all but died out in these days, and it was that personable aspect + the outright banality of the Mplayer that made it fun.

Online Assault would've just been a lot of raging and anger over people playing as Wolf and sniper rifle instantkills.

8v8 online would have been really cool, especially if they added more vehicles and even larger maps Battlefield-style. Assault really needed more players on those huge maps.

So yes, online would have made Assault a more definitive GameCube game.

The fun of Assault's multiplayer was the simplicity, yet complexity of it.

Arwings, Wolfens, Landmasters, and all kinds of ridiculous weapons. Arena-like maps. Just a lot of great, unbalanced, fun.

Online would be cool, but the GCN wasn't really capable of that, and so I hope we can get something a bit like Assault's MP in the next Star Fox game, only online this time.

On one hand I think playing Assault with 8 buddys would have been great, but on the other the game did have some real balance issues. Playing online with strangers would suck.

Just like Metroid Prime Hunters.  HEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Online sounds good on paper but the OP characters/vehicles/weapons would make it super unfun.

Yes, I agree on that. If there had been an online multiplayer, they would have had to do a lot of balancing changes. But with these balancing changes, I feel an awesomeness emanating from an alternate present. The one with Assault being online.

I hate to do this but, the Gamecube could play games online....just with a lot of tweaking...

^^^That video shows someone playing SSBM online (about 6 years ago) and it is real, because you can see the immense amount of lag on the stage while the match is going on.

I think it would be very easy to fix the "OMG cheap Wolf user" problem. Just make it so that Wolf is not a selectable character in the online modes.

Really I feel that Assault only needed online multiplayer to literally become Nintendo's equivalent to Halo (at the time).

Well, I said it "wasn't really" capable of online, as there were only like 2 (?) games that officially had online support.. I think.

So it didn't really have the whole streamlined online capability that the Xbox and PS2 had.

However, yeah, people have found ways to unlock it and play MK Double Dash and SSBM online, maybe even a few others.

If I'm remembering right Assault was meant to be cross-compatible with the cancelled Star Fox Arcade project. Not online, but something a lot more than it was. Apparently there's left over code for other characters too :/

Hell yeah it would have been better and more popular, I really enjoyed it, though my friends were limited to only two people and they didn't like playing it anyways.

It could of been been a much better game with online multiplayer. Instead of a four split screen, you would have your own making your visual experience much better. If it was online they would probably have more players than just 4. In my perspective of things, online gameplay would benefit this game in great amounts.

If starfox ever becomes online then expect tons of annoying people shouting quotes from 64. You know the ones.

Not to mention server lag.

There were many a time I spent playing online games and found it pleasurable to single them out kill them over and over again, spawn camping them til they left completely.  :pimp:  Guilty pleasure without the guilty part.

I adore Assault's multiplayer mode. So much fun and laughs with friends to this day.

I think an online component would have been awesome if the GCN was more compatible for it. Maybe the next Star Fox will have a similar and improved multiplayer mode similar to Assault's with a killer online system. :D

I have many memories of playing assault, the personal part of it is though is the memories made with friends/family. if the GC couldve been online/lan for assault, it wouldve been a bit better, though one thing i find saddening is today gamers only play games for competition, not all do like myself. I play for memories, for fun. I hope there are more SF games with engaging story and fun local/ online multiplayer.

An online mode for Assault's multiplayer would have been awesome. Then again, I'm also someone who wishes it was possible to play against computers in VS mode, so...

Assault's multiplayer was a blast. Basically all they need to do is rip everything from that game mode, port it over to the Wii U starfox THEY HAD BETTER BE MAKING, add a few new levels, touch up the current ones, make Corneria City larger, add in a few more characters and give us a 6v6 online multiplayer mode. I would willingly buy 3 copies of the game if they did this, or something like this.

To be fair, isn't this the case with ALL such battle games online?

I think online was still relatively in its infancy at the time and I don't think Nintendo and Namco would've had a good handle on it. Both companies aren't well known, even now, for good online experiences. If they wanted online, they would've been better either with a western dev, or Sega (having experience with teh Dreamcast and everything).

Also, there was not voice chat with the gamecube. Texting wouldn't be convenient in such a game, and I think the game wouldn't be anywhere near as fun playing against strangers.... then again, I feel that way about most online games.

I myself personally didn't have many opportunity's to play the Multi-player mode since I lived in such a remote Area, and friend's were few and far between that actually played video games. So yes, I myself would've loved to have an online version at the time. :-P

I do agree though that wolf's stats were by far the most frustrating aspect in terms of balance, so if there was a ever a collecter's release of the games, re-mastered like wind-waker recently was, then I'd say him as well as the other characters would need a few tweaks.

I think online would be a great feature for a next generation Star Fox game, with sweet new graphics! :D Even for Star Fox Assault I think online would have worked for the fact that it was a simple multiplayer and it was easy for anyone to pick it up.

I keep forgetting that Star Fox assault was intended to be a multiplayer game only. I personally feel that the game was much better with the story mode, being only a multiplayer game would take away from the story. (Well the way the multiplayer was there would be no story hah..)

I'm going to have to agree that Wolf is cheap...something would have to balance that. :P

Hey, someone quoted me!

I feel the need to reiterate mypoint and elaborate upon it some.

Assault's multiplayer was fun, yes. It was fun because it was stupid. High energy spastic couch game. Online fails here because:

1: You lose the personal aspect. Sure, laughs aren't impossible online (I made my TF2 career off of them), but Assault's banality would quickly lose charm when sitting alone in front of your TV.

2: It was unbalanced. A lot of people are just taking this as "lol Wolf", but Wolf is merely the peak of the pyramid. Sniper Rifles are one-shot-kills on any part of the body (except for Wolf) and cause the character to flop about in a daze that, guess what, gives the sniper enough time to line up a second shot (if they're Wolf). There's handicap weapons (Demon Launcher/Sniper) which auto-kill EVERYTHING. The maps are not competitively balanced: Titania was essentially a huge open field with a mountain for people to sniper-camp on. Fichina was a huge open field with a tiny building in the center, so Arwings dominated there. Really,it just sucked to use the Landmaster due to the awkward controls and slow speed. Krystal and Peppy were super-gimped (Peppy's x4 charge shot almost made up for it), and Falco isn't far behind. Slippy was solid but specialized in the tank which just blew ass. Wolf was the only character skilled at using the Wolfen. The only modes were Deathmatch and Stock Battle. The list goes on, but I haven't played in years.

These are not the makings of a solid, lasting, enjoyable online multiplayer experience. Sure, it might've been goofy chaotic fun, but it would've died out within weeks or months because it would've gotten old, fast. It wouldn't have saved Assault, just prolonged its lifespan artificially.
