Subbed or Dubbed?

I liked Korra. I liked how similar to anime it was, and how it stuck to a story and had little filler. I liked the art too.

And as far as Gurren Lagann goes....Gurren Lagann is amazing. It's really great.

 

I liked Korra too, but I just had too high of hopes for it. It was still a really awesome series and I'm looking forward to the next season.

 

And did you guys ever here of the anime Ghost Stories? Supposedly the subbed version was so bad, that for the first dub they told the actors to just adlib and say whatever they want, because whatever they would come up with on the spot would be better than the actual script.

From what I read, it was the ADV dub that changed it to ad-libbing, though they say that the series' original license holder okay-ed the changes.

 

The Animax dub stays true to the original version, apparently.

I don't watch anime often, but when I do, I sometimes check out the dub first.

 

And if it sounds like crap, I just look for the subbed version.

I usually never watch dubbed, however, I will acknowledge the great dubbed version of Dragon ball, which I consider it better than the original. Specially the Latin American Spanish version. English version has the best Vegeta voice acting tho.

I feel bad for people whenever they say they can't find good dubs. I should make a list sometime of some really good dubs. TTGL, Madoka, and Durarara come to mind.

I don't hate dubbs, but I'd like it if they didn't hack and slash the animes up and then show us whats left.

That doesn't happen a whole lot nowadays, but with kids shows it could still happen. It used to happen a lot with kids shows or done to turn shows into kids shows.

I believe I have heard of it, and wow.

There are plenty of shows with good dubs. More than bad nowadays, I think.

Don't forget to throw Cowboy Bebop on that list. Bebop's dub is amazing.

Also, FMA:B had a good dub.

Bebop and Brotherhood both had excellent dubs! My favorite part of Bebop's dub was Steve Blum, but Beau Billingslea's voice was also enjoyable.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Mainly for Crispin Freeman and Johnny Yong Bosch)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Best dub in the world right here)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (This show is the reason Cristina Vee is in my top five voice actors)

Durarara!!

Fate/Stay Night (Sorta rocky at times, but Liam O'Brien is in top form as Archer)

Persona 4: The Animation

 

There's the list of all the best dubs I can think of. They run from simply being acceptable (Persona 4) to being some of the most amazing things I've ever heard (TTGL, which I can't fathom watching in Japanese after seeing the dub).

 

So, to anyone who has trouble finding good dubs, give some of them a shot. Maybe a little bit down the line, I'll also put together a list of dubs to avoid like the plague. I've seen plenty of those, too XD

When I saw "Digimon" on your list, I was like "Digimon? Good dub? Whaaa?" and then I saw "Tamers" and I was like "Oh. That makes sense."

Don't get me wrong. I like the original Digimon's dub. But to say it's a good dub I think would be off.

As for Tamers, I've not seen much of it, but it's newer, so I would expect it to have a much better dub.

Tamers has a couple of mediocre performances, but Melissa Fahn as Rika and Derek Stephen Prince as Beelzemon are fucking fantastic. It also has Jamieson Price and Steve Blum, so there's some real good names tied to it.

It really depends. I usually end up seeing the subbed version first, and then I try and find dub clips.

 

There's some anime that have been dubbed very well (Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin really stick out to me here.), and then there's some that are quite lacking (Puella Magi Madoka Magica's dub wasn't terrible by any means, but it wasn't very memorable either.).

 

Overall, I prefer my anime subbed.

Disregarding the fact that I do kinda like TV-Nihon's subs (if only because they don't translate "henshin" in their Kamen Rider subs, and that's how I was introduced to the series so seeing Over-Time actually translate it is weird to me), that's not what the discussion is about, at least up to this point. I sort of just assumed that everyone in this topic was aware that some sub groups aren't that great at what they do, and thus the talk wasn't about the quality of the subs so much as whether or not they like the performances to be in Japanese or English.

 

But, since you bring it up, there indeed have been instances where, for whatever reason, I wanted to watch the sub instead of the dub, but the subtitles were really awkwardly translated, written in an extremely unappealing font or color, or had weird little distracting quirks. I recently watched through the first two seasons of Shakugan no Shana, and despite there being a couple of people in the English dub who I really liked, I didn't like that they were going to be replaced by different VAs come seasons 2 and 3, so I watched it subbed. The subs, though, were pretty ugly and had this thing going on where if 2 lines of dialogue were onscreen, there would be a couple of weird boxes at the end of the first line.

 

So yeah, I guess you do raise a point that sometimes the subtitles themselves can negatively impact an otherwise solid performance on the Japanese side of things. The question is whether or not that's a deal breaker for the individual watching the show. It's not really, for me. I've watched enough anime that even if something is translated a bit strangely, I can tend to figure out what the characters are trying to get across from the context of the translated words, and I can deal with ugly fonts.

I like dubbed, but subbed can also teach you some japaneese. I sometimes just watch sub because I would like to learn some japaneese phrases. But sometimes sub can get annoying, so I will watch dub, if you know what I mean.

I prefer dubbed if it's available. I like watching my anime without having to pause and rewind every now and then just to read the subtitles. I've never really come across a bad dub, since I have low standards. There are a few anime that have annoying dub voices, but thankfully those have been restricted to more kid friendly anime (I'm talking about you, Beyblade: Metal Fusion, you horrible piece of crap!).
