Talyl Landmaster
Hello. For those who don't know, back when Star Fox: Assault was announced for the Game Cube, another project that was announced was an arcade game for the Star Fox Franchise. But to this day, nothing else was said about it, so it was assumed scrapped. My question is, what do you think the arcade, if it were to be released, would have been like? How would the game play work, how would you play with others, and what else could have, or SHOULD have, been included? All comments and suggestions are welcome just as long as they are polite. Thank you.
Drasiana
I always figured it was just a companion to Assault. There's leftover code in Assault for stages/characters that were never used that I assumed were unlocked through cross-compatibility between Assault and Arcade. I can't remember if it was speculation or official statement but at some point something was going around about how you could plug your memory card into the arcade game to unlock stuff/progress. That would have been interesting.
Terramax
Depends on who was developing it. There's obviously a very high chance it would've been Namco. And Namco's track record for arcade games is only beaten by that of Sega. Therefore, it's likely an arcade Star Fox would've been freakin' awesome! Actually, thinking of what it would've been like isn't that hard to imagine if you play any Namco arcade games in a Japan arcade over the last few years. Only the other month I played a 4-player tank game game with some friends. it was co-op, and we went around 3D arenas killing off enemies, before a giant boss. Wouldn't take much a stretch of the imagination to think of what it would've been like with Star Fox's tanks. And considering Namco are perhaps mostly well known, besides fighters, to make 1st person rail shooters like Time Crisis, I suspect something among those lines for the flying sections. Perhaps something like Star Wars Arcade. However, if Nintendo had any sense, they would've approached Sega to have made it. Seeing as this is during the time Sega made the awesome Gamecube and arcade F-zero title, which literally pushed the Cube to its limits, it's clear Sega and Ninty were on good terms. Sega also, being the grand-daddy of 3rd person rails shooters with games like Space Harrier, and the more recent Panzer Dragoon, mean they'd know exactly what to do with the Star Fox licence, as far as gameplay goes. Man, just thinking about a Sega-Nintendo Star Fox Arcade makes me throth at the mouth.
Drasiana
It was Namco behind it. Pity it fell through.
2Tie
Well, F-Zero AX was co-developed by Nintendo, Sega, and Namco, so I can only assume that Assault's companion would be likewise. What that means is that it would have most likely been stupendous. I always thought Assault felt more like an arcade game than a console game, so it makes me really wonder what the actual arcade iteration might have been like... Co-op and versus modes seems very plausible, and i'd imagine it'd share the same control and gameplay (ridiculously fast running, vehicle swapping, linear stage progression, etc.) as the console, albeit with less of a story.
