New XBox does not require internet connection

To be completely fair, a NeoGAF forum user isn't exactly what I'd call a reputable source.  If it was not considered, why didn't MS outright deny it when Orth spoke on the subject?  With that said, I'd wait for official word as opposed to speculating any further.

I believe it's Adam Orth you're referring to, btw. I take that site with a grain of salt, but I like what i see so far, although I don't like the fact it MAY not have an optical drive. About 75% of my Xbox library is physical discs. Unless they come out with a way that you can convert your discs to an online format, that may not sit well with me.

At first I thought you just re-posted the topic I made lol.

And I think it was because of Adam that this happened. Congrats Adam, you sacrificial lamb you. Hope all of you learned a valuable lesson: Sometimes Education, Spotlight and Public Opinion CAN BE (or just plain ARE) more powerful than freedom of speech, so don't abuse it.

Well, it seems the new Xbox still has potential against the bland (as of this date) Sony proposal.

I'll be honest, this whole "console war" nonsense is really turning into a battle to see which system has the least problems and inconveniences. I can see myself turning into more of a PC gamer in the very near future if the big 3 don't realize they are forcing old gamers out of the market with their business practices. I thought the removal of backward compatibility from hardware it had existed on was bad enough, but it's all gotten out of hand. At the end of the day, knowledge is power. I'm not going to allow them to rip me off.

And I know it may not be completely relevant to the topic, but this video explains pretty much exactly how I feel about the gaming industry at this point (minus the parts about tablets and other portable devices). {first 3 minutes are about the console wars, then he goes into the state of the industry as a whole, then he talks about "mobile gaming", but I don't agree with his argument there} As a fair warning he does curse a couple of times.

I can understand the removal of backward compatibility, though especially in the case of the PS3/PS4; the PS4 operates on a completely different architecture than the PS3, thereby making backward compatibility expensive as well as a pain to institute.  As consoles further become more and more PC-like, the problem will further be compounded in the future.

The best bet at the moment if your finances allow is to have a gaming PC and whichever console has the best exclusives.

Also, backwards compatibility is actually a very niche area. Yes it's convenient, but not everyone gets rid of their current system in favour of the new one. Hell, I think most don't, actually (pretty sure there was a study on that). I for one still own, in the Sony area, my original PS1, two PS2s (three if you count an unworking one), and my PS3. If/when I get a PS4, I'll still have all the former, plus a new PS4.

Backwards compatibility ups the price of the system for everyone, generally, can be spotty and unreliable (many games may not work or can have severe performance decreases), and is overall just a matter of convenience but is not necessary.
