Arashikage
Okay, so I've been debating this for a while, but I never seriously considered getting one until last night. So why should I get a 3DS? What does it offer me? And what are the things that it can do that my phone or other surfaces(PS3, PSP, tablet computer, laptop, etc) can't? Obvious things aside like the 3D screen. Is the 3D screen a gimmick? How often is it actually used, and how often do you guys use it? Are the games any better for the 3DS than they were for the regular DS? Are the graphics better? Is it a beefier system in terms of hardware? Is the connectivity any better? Do they have more features than Pictochat and backwards compatibility with the GBA and GB? And what games would you recommend to get someone into the 3DS? I have so many questions, and my birthday is in 18 days. If I have the money by then based on everyone's suggestions, I might or might not go buy one. Please help me out, I haven't heard a lot about the system.
Geo Stelar
Are the games any better for the 3DS than they were for the regular DS? Are the graphics better? Is it a beefier system in terms of hardware? The newer games are great, and besides, the 3DS has backward compatibility for DS games. It has better graphics, and since it's a newer system, it is better, I think, in terms of hardware. Do they have more features than Pictochat and backwards compatibility with the GBA and GB? And what games would you recommend to get someone into the 3DS? It does not have backward compatibility with GBA games, only DS and DSi software. Games to recommend include the upcoming pokemon x and y, animal crossing: new leaf, starfox 64 3D, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Donkey Kong: Country Returns 3D, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time 3D, the LEGO games, Super mario 3D Land, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate/Monster Hunter 4. Lots of choices really. Including the working title on SSB.
CrypticQuery
Because if you do, Miyamoto-san will be VERY happy. -- Otherwise though, I dunno. I haven't really gotten decent usage out of a portable gaming console in quite some time - primarily because I don't go anywhere. xD
DoctorAllosaurus
Right off the bat I'm going to say yes to the 3D being a gimmick. Graphically there is a big improvement, I'd say you're getting Gamecube quality graphics out of the thing. Connectivity is much better, no more having a different friend code for each game, instead you only have the one for everything.
ballisticwaffles
If you get a 3DS you will have something to do on the crapper. /Thread
Hidi
You buy a 3DS to subject yourself to eye hurt and ear rape (Since those speakers aren't amazing). Primarily a sarcastic post, but Fire Emblem awakening is the game I'm looking at right now.
Fana McCloud
I haven't really gotten decent usage out of a portable gaming console in quite some time - primarily because I don't go anywhere. xD Somebody's been living in his parents' basement for awhile. But as for the actual topic, I mean if you don't have the original DS then it's a way to play portable Nintendo exclusives. Just depends on how much of a fanboy you are. For me personally there's almost no reason EXCEPT Star Fox 64 3D, and that's not enough of a reason to buy hardware and then a game that's a remake of one I loved when I was 13 years old. A completely new Star Fox game? Maaaaaybe... very SOFT maybe. I'd rather just get an Ouya though, see if anything good will come of that. Not portable I know but maybe with it being Android based you could take some of those same games on your smartphone too? I dunno if that's really so true but some games might be able to cross from controller to touchscreen with minimal changes to port it. I was kinda surprised that Square Enix actually had the cojones to back Ouya with a version of Final Fantasy 3 on the thing. So yeah, I'd say pass on the 3DS unless you're really in love with Nintendo franchises.
Arashikage
Well my DS's triggers broke a while ago, so I gave it to my cousin so she could play Brain Age 2 or whatever. I couldn't play Animal Crossing Wild World on it with the triggers in their state. Nor could I play GBA games. I'm currently using my sister's DS, which she keeps telling me she wants back, but I'm like "I'M ALMOST DONE WEEDING MY TOWN HANG ON" I also really really want New Leaf which has just come out. I figured it'd be a good idea to get a new system to play my DS games and be able to play some newer games like New Leaf, that new Mario Kart game, and possibly play online with some of the people here. I know lots of people here have 3DSs. But yeah, a new DS Lite goes for about $100, and for thirty or so bucks more I can get a used 3DS. It seems workable to me. If I have the money by then based on everyone's suggestions, I might or might not go buy one. Please help me out, I haven't heard a lot about the system. Q:Why buy a 3DS? A:It's got plenty of nice games on it, and, by the looks of it, more to come. Q:Can it do anything your phone and stuff can't? A:Play some of the video games on it... Q:Is the 3D a gimmick? How often is it used? It's pretty gimmicky. I don't own a 3DS, but I have played one, and the 3D isn't really something that's necessary. At times it can get in the way. I probably wouldn't use it too much. Q: Any games better for the 3DS then DS? Are the graphics better? Beefier hardware? A: Normal DS games are usually not much, if at all different from the 3DS. However the 3DS is an entirely new handheld. 3DS games are very different from DS games. They seem to have much, much better graphics and seem more fit for 3D games. (By 3D, I mean games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time as opposed to say, Zelda: A Link To the Past) The graphics are greatly improved on the 3DS, as 3DS games look WAY better then DS games. I would assume this means beefier hardware. I will say that apparently Pokemon Black and White have more features on a 3DS. Q: Is the connectivity better? Are there more features then Pictochat? What about backwards compatability? A: I don't know about the connectivity. There definitely seems to be more features then Pictochat. AR games seem to be a big one. The 3DS can't play GBA games, at least not by using a GBA cartridge. however, I believe you can buy GBA games in the 3DS store. The same applies to GB games, I believe. Q: What games would you reccomend for it? A: Cave Story 3D if you don't mind that its almost exactly the same as Cave Story + but in 3D(in more then one way), plus the original is freeware online. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D if you want Zelda:OoT and Zelda:OoT Masterquest in better graphics plus a boss battle mode. Star Fox 64 3D, which I believe is just better graphics Star Fox 64, possibly with a few minor edits. Kid Icarus Uprising is fun if you can handle the controls, I believe. Pokemon X and Y are probably brilliant. A new Rune Factory game should be coming soon, and its a fun series. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is probably fun. Fire Emblem Awakening is probably fun. Really, game wise the system has a lot to offer, plus Nintendo's E3 announcements are soon to come so that could mean more. I think I heard that the new Smash Bros. game will be on 3DS and Wii U. Redeemer
I love my 3DS. The 3D is quite good, but it can vary from game to game. It's especially amazing on OoT 3D. It's not for serious gaming, but it's portable and has some awesome social things, like Street Quest and Puzzle Swap. It's fun, and it you want fun, get a 3DS. :
CrypticQuery
Somebody's been living in his parents' basement for awhile. Having a basement to myself would be a luxury at this point, ha. --- I did mess around with the 3DS in Gamestop once; the 3D was admittedly quite nice although I do imagine that it would give a decent headache after awhile. Anyone experience that?
Vy'drach
I did mess around with the 3DS in Gamestop once; the 3D was admittedly quite nice although I do imagine that it would give a decent headache after awhile. Anyone experience that? Not me. I tend to keep mine just a tad bit off of max, though. You get less screen blurring for practically no change in 3D effect this way.
Arashikage
Q:Can it do anything your phone and stuff can't? A:Play some of the video games on it... Yes but my phone can play some really good games on it. Why should I get a 3DS for just a few games when my phone plays good games already was my question. But yes, I think I will get one if I don't for my birthday. It sounds like something fun to have.
Terramax
The 3D is terrible. A waste of time, and drains the battery like nobody's business. You should only get a 3DS if you like many Nintendo franchises. That's the bottom line. If you don't, I recommend a PS Vita instead. I personally enjoy that console 10x more. After getting a Vita, I sold my 3DS 3 months later because I was never playing it. Haven't looked back.
Arashikage
So I think that I should follow up on this, I did get a 3DS, and I love it. I got Animal Crossing New Leaf with it, and I really really like the 3D, and the multiplayer is good too. New Leaf is a direct improvement of Wild World. But I love my 3DS! Hidi
Stop making me remember that 3DS games are far out of my gaming budget right now. Say, have you had a chance to play Fire Emblem Awakening yet? I really want to play that. Animal Crossing.....Maybe, but given I've spent countless hours on that, I'm putting it off.
Xidphel
If you like challenges, I'd recommend Etrian Odyssey 4 for 3DS.
Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted July 4, 2013 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted July 4, 2013 Not only do you get to play 3DS games, you can also play DS games as well. Don't forget about the virtual console aspect as well - you can play some classic NES games, Gameboy and Gameboy Color games ( I bought a few - Megaman 2 (NES), Link's Awakening DX, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons - very fun).
