PC problems, could use some help.

WOLFjr

Question

Recently, something went wrong with my laptop. For some reason, all of the media players on it won't work at all. Windows Media Player, iTunes, even PowerDVD won't work properly. Does Anyone mind helping me out with this, please?

Here's the details on the problem: Every audio and video file I try to play on Windows Media Player, I keep getting the message that it could not play the file. With iTunes, the files just don't start playing at all. And with PowerDVD, there is no audio even when I have the volume turned all the way up and the video just moves slow like it's buffering or something, when I put in a DVD too.

Try re-installing the driver for your sound card.

If that doesn't fix it, download these:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=507

http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm (Watch the installer, it will try to install a browser toolbar unless you uncheck the box)

Both were tried, but neither worked.

Update: The problem has been fixed. While searching through my installed programs, I came across one I did not recognize (possibly from my HP updates) called 'IDT Audio'. Looking at it, it was installed around the same time all my media players stopped working. I looked up the program and turned out someone else had this same problem. He offered a simple solution, I followed it, and now my media players all work again.

Have you checked to make sure those programs are enabled within Windows?

I know they're enabled. Let me go into detail. Every audio and video file I try to play on Windows Media Player, I keep getting the message that it could not play the file. System/Software updates? I've never had this problem before, so I'm really just putting in the basic fixes.

Also try files and file-type association. What types of files are you trying to play primarily? MP3s, .MTS, .M4v? Any of that?

I mostly play MP3s,MP4s, and FLVs (which I want to point out DID play on Windows Media Player on my laptop).

I'll try and update my system and software and see if that works, though I haven't a sinking feeling it won't.

Did you install any video codecs, a new media player or anything ? And does it gives you an error message when you try playing the file ? If you click on the speaker in the taskbar, and click "mixer",  and then look at the volume level for each programs, is the volume for the players you're using higher than 0 ?

Then go check what is your preferred audio device, and make sure its your soundcard, and that its not de-activated.

No, I haven't installed any video codecs or new media player at all. Yes, I always get a message whenever I try playing a file on Windows Media Player that simply states, "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file."

As for the last part, it's obviously not the sound card cause I still get audio when watching internet videos.

You could try doing a System Restore/Recovery. Sounds drastic, but I once did that as a last resort and it worked.
