Tricky - Annoying or Awesome?

Well he was very useful and good to have around (at least SLIPPY wasn't following me around >.>), only thing that was annoying was his voice. Bu then you could say he was a child, so that's why. Otherwise he was okay-kinda like the Red Shirt that doesn't die and happens to be a handy comrade.

I think one of the things that people who hate him have a tendency to forget is that Tricky is a child when we first deal with him.

 

Children, generally, are loud, and don't always see things logically. They prefer to have things their way. They will wander and try to do things on their own. They are more easily distressed then things go wrong. They like to pull pranks or just be comically insulting, only to hide behind a stronger, trustworthy figure when actually threatened. They can be saddened and excited within seconds of each other. They get upset and unwilling to do things when tired or hungry. They're impressionable.

 

Tricky laughs at Fox and teases him when they first meet, and he immediately "hides" behind his father when Fox threatens to hit him. He becomes distressed when his family is in trouble (And immediately looks to Fox for help.), and is beyond relieved when they are fine. He wanders off and tries to take on enemies bigger and tougher than him. More often when he talks, his voice is loud and forceful, demanding attention. Tricky will not do things unless he is fed enough. And of course, if you hit him, he won't tolerate it for long and will fight back.

 

On the other hand, he is very willing to help, and clearly thinks highly enough of Fox even not that long after meeting him (I would say for me personally, between meeting Fox and curing his mother, it would have been at least an hour/hour and a half - and after all that, he's very quick to praise Fox, saying to his mother, "I told you he was good! Starfox, yeah!"). He wants what's best for the planet and his family. He's sad when Fox has to leave, but is very quickly excited to find that he's been made an honourary member, running circles, asking if he'll get his own spaceship.

 

When he runs into Fox years later, he's clearly quite happy to see him. Once again, he wants to help, but is reassured that he's needed on his own planet, and he agrees - making sure to make a jab at Fox and his relationship with Krystal afterwards. It's a sign of maturity, but it also harkens back to the older days.

 

Ugh, I'm running out of steam here. Should have just left it at the opening sentence.

 

In closing, it's not really a good argument in saying that he's annoying. He's a child who matures into a young adult years later. He's still learning the ways of the world, and it'll be a long while before he becomes some old wise man - who'll probably still be cracking good natured jokes all the while.

You said it pretty well! Tricky's pretty much just like a little brother, sometimes annoying, but still your little brother. I get people being annoyed by him but he was really just a little kid that had to deal with his parents being injured and kidnapped and enter this big scary war-torn world himself and Fox is basically the only friend or guidance he has. It's...compelling in a really weird way, I guess.

I've been playing through Adventures again recently. Tricky was crying out for help in the Darkice Mines, and when he was finally released, he was found rolling around in the dirt singing.

 

I love Tricky.

I do think that Tricky is annoying but not in the level of Max Rage(Goes berserk and kills everyone), its more like Annoyingly Nice(it was fun to make him change his color), whereas The Shopkeeper... Grr... makes my rage rise quite quickly.

Aha! How funny that annoying has the least votes. I kind of expected it to be the other way around.

 

I'm pretty much neutral. Other people argue and say he's stupid... I don't really care a whole lot. I don't really think of tricky as a character being stupid. Well, maybe a little. But he didn't really irritate me at all, nor did I think he was awesome. So yeah, another vote for neutral.
