I've said it once and I'll say it again, this looks like a retarded trapper keeper with buttons. The only people buying this are probably parents with young children that probably won't be able to reach the oddly placed shoulder buttons.

That's kinda the point. It's an entry level system without the 3D features, meant for younger kids. 3D can damage developing eyes, so it's a more appealing option for parents who are worried that their kids will turn the 3D on anyways because duhurr when do kids ever listen to their parents? That way kids aren't exactly left out of the games the 3DS currently has to offer.

I'm fine with it being 2D, the problem is that it's very poorly designed, no kid is going to be able to hold that thing comfortably. What they should have done was make it look like a chunkier original GBA, or at least something that can be held comfortably.

Ah. I heard about some news fail on this story, didn't see it until now, though.

I don't know how I was able to bear listening to it. It's so horribly sad that it's hard to even laugh..........

And the Wii system is going to be $50 dollars cheaper!

Although, just a note to people looking to buy a Wii this holiday season, don't buy that 32GB Wii for $300 when you could get one without an HDD for $200 less. It'll be black, a bit smaller than the $300 version, and it won't have that annoying touchscreen controller, but instead, some little remotes. Be sure to get that instead. No reason to spend $200 more for something you don't need.

I think the Wii can compete with Sony and Microsoft's offerings this year. It's only a generation or two behind. Shouldn't be a problem as long as people remember to buy the $100 dollar model instead of that dumb $300 version.

(And now that I'm done joking around)

The 2DS is an absolutely brilliant idea. Cheaper, simple, sweet. Quite a bang for your buck, if you ask me. I've never used the 3D all that much. I don't care for it, and I don't like the way it feels looking at 3D.

The price cut on the Wii U is definitely a good idea. It's now $300 for Nintendo, $400 for Sony, and $500 for Microsoft. Things are looking up.

People can't video game consoles. For many, any console is still a Nintendo. The fact that they even know what the names are (or at least, close) surprises me.

Go play some mario on your cubebox 2 or whatever

Though the entire gaming community is having a conniption about the 2DS, I think it's a good move. I have a small but select group of friends that don't even use the 3D on their 3DSes. It's not an appealing feature to them. So for $40 less they can get something that gets rid of this feature but still uses the same game library. $40 is two games. I do agree that the ommittance of the clam shell design is strange but I lug my tablet around all the time, why not lug a flat gaming console as well? Also from what I've read from the few existing hands-on tests people say it's pretty comfortable.

I think it's actually a really great move for the entry level gamer, as well as those who don't find the 3D as appealing. It also looks more ruggedly designed for children.

Keep in mind that this is NOT MEANT AS AN UPGRADE for the 3DS. IT IS DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT ALREADY OWN ONE. People need to get that through their skulls.

Also looking forward to finding out what the battery life is like hmm yes.

I just want that Samsung Watch. That looks stylish.

But back to topic. I got with what Lone says. A cheaper, No-3D version of the 3DS. To be honest the one reason I don't want to get the 3DS is because it was expensive and the 3D hurt my eye sockets. I might want to get this paperweight of a portable console just because of the initial starting price alone. And without the THREE PAINFUL FU**ING D, I DON'T WANT THE D!

It does look uncomfortable though to children hands from just looking at it. The more adult hand seems to fit better but I don't know just by looking.

In short. Haters can hate, but I not.

All the interviews I've read have people saying the 2DS feels great in their hands, so ergonomics are not a problem.

Also, they're rolling this out as the entry level version of the 3DS line, cheaper than the regular DS, more oriented towards children, with Pokemon X and Y right around the corner.

Lodes e mone in Nintendo's pocket.

You'd think they would have offered the economy version up front...you know before everyone else went broke over the 3ds.

The amount of whining going on towards this across the internet is fucking stupid. I might actually get a 2DS! You know why? Because I can't look at a fucking 3DS screen without getting a massive headache. Yes, even with the 3D turned off, it's something to do with the way the screens are layered. Wow, a console so kids and people with vision problems can enjoy the same games without causing eye damage or massive discomfort! Nintendo is clearly just a bunch of sellout jerks.

But Apple can make a smaller Ipad and a Bigger Iphone (with no other significant upgrades, mind you) and none of you would make a sound. Bunch of hypos...

I can understand taking the 3D effect away since this is probably like everyone has said "its made for younger children so the 3D effect doesn't damage the developing eyes." Not to mention it also allows lesser battery power since the 3D effect burns more energy.

My only problem with it though is the fact they made it solid and not foldable. By making it solid, that increases the chance of those 2 screens getting seriously damaged. This also makes it less portable, making it not be able to fit in a pocket.

So yeah, I like the "2D only" thing, but I still wish they kept it in the shape it was before.

Children can really fck up the folding screen. Which is why my niece is not allowed to touch laptops or my 3DS.

This system was not made with older users in mind, though the fact that some will be able to enjoy it is definitely a positive.

Someone on Tumblr put it best I think, they said something along the lines of "if you think this is a stupid move, then this system was not meant for you."

Why are people losing their marbles with this? These days it's almost mandatory to put out a cheap small version of an article. Nothing new. It's not a next step, it's an alternative current step. I don't see a problem with the exposed screens. Tablets and smartphones are always sold screen-out and many prefer it that way instead of buying an unorthodox skin. Plus, folded or not, it's stIll going to break if you throw them to a wall. Point is, Nintendo isn't a novice company, they surely worked that out

The shoulder joint on my old DS exploded off of it for no reason whatsoever so maybe it'll do me good not to have a folding one anyways :B

At first, I thought this was a joke.

On a closer look, I think I'm happy to have saved up for a 3DS! I cannot see how holding that thing can be comfortable, and with the advice of other 3DS users, keeping the 3D off is enough for me, though I do sustain less eye hurt when I wear my glasses, but I try and wear them when I use electronics anyway.

The hinges on the 3DS felt a little more flimsy than the DSLite ones, but I prefer something that folds itself away. I'd rather a scratched exterior than a screen covered in chips (If your stylus hasn't done that already). For me, it's more worry-free to stick something with a degree of protection around the most important parts than to have something exposed.

To be honest, I kind of like this DS. If I had not already got a 3DS, I may have considered getting this one. I only use the 3D feature about 5% of the time I play it, and I could have saved some money by buying this DS. :-P

I am not to much of a fan of the design though. I guess it is mostly because it looks nothing like any of the previous DS designs. I will admit though it is pretty interesting that they are releasing something with a design that is out of the ordinary. :-)

My initial thought was that it was a horrible design that leaves the screens exposed...but then I realized almost all handheld consoles have this problem so I have nothing to complain about in that arena. So really all I'm left with is saying that it just looks ugly. It appears to be rather large but not very thick, making me concerned about the durability of it like a Samsung Note. Something about this release screams to me Gameboy Nano since that was also an attempt at making an economy level handheld...

I dunno, just the way you grip it looks awkward and uncomfortable in comparison to the traditional DS feel. Personally for me though, I tend to death-grip whatever device my hands are in when I'm gaming, so smaller like the DS bottom is better for my hands to grip.

Here's a photo of the 2DS next to a 3DS-XL;

2ds.jpg

The 2DS seems to be about a quarter smaller than the 3DS. Its lack of a hinge means the system can't fold up for easy portability, but it's much smaller than in initially appeared. The 2DS will fit well in laptop bags, purses, or the school backpacks of its intended younger audience.

I like the idea of the 2DS, just not the name.

The facepalm was for the clueless newsroom that failed to go to www.nintendo.com and look at the product page before writing something up about it.

I've been reading around online about this, looking at pictures and reading an interview with Reggie on nintendo3dsblog.com, and such.

It's been stated that the 2DS is for children under 7, which personally I think is great. Children under 7 are not advised to look at 3D because their eyes and optic muscles are vulnerable to damage, so why give them the option? Safety first. Also the open and closing function of my 3DS is clunky and to be honest, if I was a kid with small hands and weaker arms, I'd probably struggle and damage the hinge.

Also the 2DS doesn't look so awkward to me. I still have my old Game Gear, which is massive, heavy, and awkward to hold but I still remember it with fond nostalgia. This 2DS is smaller, slimmer, and more comfortable for smaller people, which I would have preferred around the time I was playing my Game Gear.

So yeah, I'm not going to get my jimmies rustled over this because it's not affecting me directly. I wouldn't choose a 2DS now, but if I was shopping for my young son or daughter, I'd most likely purchase one.

People somehow think this thing is massive. I've seen pics of it with the rest of the 3DS family. It's smaller than an open 3DS, and definitely smaller than the XL.

Also, the amount of people complaining about screen damage potential.... It seems that the internet is now populated with people who never had a Game Boy.
