Illegal Slot Error (Sega Saturn)

AuroraCave

Question

Not sure if there is any Sega Saturn collectors here, however I've recently bought a Sega Saturn for a minimal of $60 and it's in top notch shape as well. The model is a MK-80000 (Model 1-US) and I have no ram carts in with me at the moment. Which could be the explanation, but I'm still slightly new to the Saturn.

The error seen here is a Illegal Slot Error PC=(random numbers and letters.) Picture is below. I have no idea if this is an internal or external error for the Saturn and if it's something that could be replaced easily. The game running is a brand new factory sealed copy of Daytona USA.

I couldn't find this error in relation to the Saturn specifically, but I did find a dissertation about the CPU used in the Saturn.

Basically, this is similar to a segfault. It's a software bug. The software tried to access an instruction slot that was not allocated to it. I guess theoretically it could indicate memory failure but I don't really have anything to base that on beyond conjecture.

So, knowing now its a software bug. Is there any way of reversing such a thing to launch the game normally? The Saturn itself works fine normally and then proceeds to boot the game for about couple of seconds before freezing the software with this error popping up.

The only solution I saw in relation to this was to unscrew the screws in the bottom of the cart slot and even it for cart insertion and possibly for compact discs to recognize.

EDIT:

The console is now working and formatted itself as the result of the bug.
