psy_commando
So, yeah, its pretty rare that I attempt drawing anything, given it doesn't really end up very well in general, but I felt inspired I guess XD I stumbled on some scans of Japanese pokemon merchandise, and there was this one that caught my attention(3rd column, 4th row) : http://pokescans.tumblr.com/post/31383135797/pokemon-amada-stickers-from-japan-i-have-at-least And since Poochyena is one of my favorite pokemon, and actually the pre-evo of my favorite, I decided to give it a try. I can't count the amount of times I redrew this thing ! It seems I can't texture fur, or draw fluffy things though And the arms may be a little too big in comparison to the hind legs, or maybe not.. I haven't really seen a dog puppy nor a hyena cub from up close.. Well, besides really long ago.. And my dog is kind of a bad example given his arms are a little weird, and I don't know why but I never get a good sense of depth from 2d picture... I was wondering if anyone had anything to say that could help me improve ? Critique, comments, etc.. Also, tell me if the image doesn't work. I put the link to my DA as backup, just in case.. EDIT: I updated the image on my DA so here's the old one : http://gamios.deviantart.com/art/Poochyena-452557685
Redeemer
It seems I can't texture fur, or draw fluffy things though Since you referenced an official art, you were heavily influenced by the Pokemon style. Sometimes their pokemon don't look fluffy, but you can find fanarts where the artist has made them look super fluffy to add some extra cuteness. You see this a lot in Pokemon such as Eevee, Vulpix, Meowth, etc. Although I once saw a fluffy Squirtle and although that makes no sense, it was still adorable. xD If you like, as a favour I can redline this (that is, drawing over it and showing you how I'd do it) and I'll try and show you how to make it fluffier. Even so, you've done a great job. Considering the image was super small, I doubt you traced so well done on working with what you had. The only thing I'd watch is how some of the colour has escaped the lineart, but otherwise this is very nice, very neat and you should be proud of yourself!

Well, the tail and the puff of hair on its back is kinda fluffy in the official art. I didn't really want to really add to that. Well, besides making the light gray areas textured to look a little less bland, because it looked like a clipart when I first tried coloring it XD And Squirtle with a hairy tail makes sense, well, at least according to the pokedex XD Squirtle's tail is supposed to be hair basically. It shows even more on wartortle ! And sure, if you want to do that it'd be awesome ! Though, you used the word favor, is there something you wanted in return ? And nope, there's no way I could trace that thing ! To be honest, I actually tried XD This was going to be a simple tracing exercise to get a better feel with drawing precisely with a tablet, given I pretty much only used it to make it less tedious to paint textures. And I wouldn't have bothered posting it. But, then I just decided to go straight to actually drawing XD Here's how I did it basically: I don't know if there's an easier way though. But most drawing tutorials I read talked about drawing a skeleton first and then tweaking and going from that. So I just went with that, and gut feelings XD Also, could you show/tell me where color escaped the lineart ? I thought I fixed that And, I'm a little creeped out by the fact that the morning after I post a drawing of a Poochyena, an early Gen3 Pokemon, they confirm the Hoenn remakes XD Hoenn Confirmed ! BTW..
Redeemer
Though, you used the word favor, is there something you wanted in return ? I said favour as in I'll do this for you! I'd have said trade if I wanted something in return. Also just around the tail and back legs, I can see the colour bleaching from the lineart. It's not too noticable but you wanted feedback so. x333 And official art can portray fur but it's not exactly fluffy. Can you send me the lineart, perhaps over Skype or something? I'll show you what I mean.

I also got the Gimp project file too if you want it. Well, as far as pokemon official art goes, that's pretty fluffy ! But I guess I get your point XD

But I guess I get your point XD I'll show you exactly what I mean. xDDD And don't worry about the colour leak, that's completely normal. I do that sometimes too, it's a bad habit. xD What I recommend is, once you're done, give it a background of bright yellow and then another of black to see what shades are leaking. From the looks of things it was your highlighting or lighter colours that leaked, which is the most common culprit! You used GIMP to do this? I recommend finding a GIMP colouring tutorial because there is a way you can block colour within your lineart. I do that in SAI sometimes but it's never 100% perfect and also sometimes my lineart doesn't connect properly so that messes up the selected area. I'm better off doing it by hand. xD

I'm better off doing it by hand. xD I'll try to look for one then ! But usually I just select the region, and grow the selection of 3 pixels, then paint only in there. I did that with textures too usually, well not always, given UV maps really make it less of an issue to leak outside your lineart/template. However, sometimes I'm too lazy to do it, or just forget about it XD Also there was another issue with the coloring that I only found out later.. It wasn't fully opaque because of the brush not being fully opaque, so the second you'd put something not white behind, you could see through the colors on the character.. I really can't think of a smart way of fixing that, so I just did it all over again, starting with a flood fill first.. Actually, my workflow is really dumb. I re-did some of the lineart, but after each little thing I ended up repainting accordingly, and then I'd notice I had to fix the lineart again, and so on.. XD Also, after I gave you the new lineart, I repainted it completely and made a little crappy background And did a little variation:
