Welp.... NASA is building the enterprise

No, seriously, they are

The plan is to send the crew to alpha centauri, and using theoretical physics, they think they can develop some kind of warp technology that will get them through the 4 light year journey in about 2 weeks...

...wat...

Am I in the future?

Is this actually possible in my lifetime? If so, where do I sign to participate in this?

wow, that thing looks awesome. I wonder what they will do next when they're done with that thing.

We must keep Patrick Steward alive.

Then we film him on the Ship.

Then he says "Make it so."

???

Solve world hunger and world peace.

Profit.

Its a concept piece but its being talked about as being actually pretty possible

It looks promising though!

Don't worry, you will all be dead before this thing goes into testing phase. Not plausible at all.

NASA doesn't have the resources to build one of these things, it would require a lot of funding, which they don't get . Not even saving up for 50+ years would accomplish this.

Private companies have a better chance of getting this done, on the next century or two.

Babysteps first.

Babysteps first.

Yo steve, ol buddy, ol pal..

I got you a sun-tour ticket, man. You know, those seats have really been on fire lately.

---------

But I think the baby step here is that they can finally start talking about bending space with known physics, a serious look on their face, and a job to come back to in the morning. I can die happy with that.

I am glad there is a remarkable aesthetic here. Space travel really should have that spunk as it has always been that last frontier that was simply not possible and not even imaginable to early culture. It is imperative that a jab at conquering space should be done with such a statement.

Also, tell me, why does only Curiosity get the most kick-ass landing sequence and astronauts still land of the coast somewhere? Not to worry, SpaceX is on the job.

Last I heard acceleration beyond light speed was impossible as the very universe works to keep you from breaking the 99.999999999999999999999999999...% light speed mark, but achieving this speed does affect the flow of time for those on board. I forget the rate at which it was affected, but I think it was something like 20 minutes on board the ship would be hours for Earth. How Hawking explained it. But a 4 light year journey in 2 weeks would require travelling exponentially faster than light.

That is physically impossible last I heard. As impossible as flying by lifting up the chair you're currently sitting in. Physics just doesn't allow for that at all.

(What time is it? High's Science time!)

So Vy got a good portion of the reason why this won't happen soon. E=MC2 prevents breaking the light barrier since more mass would be required for the enormous mounts of energy. More energy would be needed to move the extra mass and this goes on into the infinite. so FTL ain't going to happen unless the ship is going to literally be a tachyon.

But the ship in concept doesn't have a need for speed. It's going off the ideas of Miguel Alcubierre and his Alcubierre drive. The concept of this isn't obtaining enough energy to move faster than light but to have enough energy to bend space-time, and in the case of the Alcubierre drive, a large ripple. So to visualize, take a piece of paper. This is space-time. Add enough energy to make the paper fold a bit and you have the idea of this concept.

What's even better to help rebake Red's hype pie is that the mathematics for this theory are valid. So if this is the case that NASA uses for massive space travel, it is possible but there are still a lot of elements to test to make it safe.

... I was going to explain this but Exec beat me to it...holy schitt

But yeah, the vessel's "jump drive" dosent rely on traveling faster than light, it basically tells the universe to look the other way while we exploit a loophole in its programming and bend space and time to our will.

Aw yeah gimme some dat hype pie.

I'd love to live long enough to see this stuff happen, but then again it could very well backfire on us. xD

Yeah, Gaben could not count to 3 for his life.

And when that time comes and this ship is fully functional, this reference will finally have a true purpose:

I....honestly am not sure what to make of this. This is like some Galaxy Quest-level stuff right here.
