The Legion of ponies server. I am not a brony, yet I still enjoy the server, for some truly crazy shit happens on it.

Friend of mine is the co-owner of the server atm but he told me that despite his best efforts the server kinda went to shit.  LoP used to be a lot better back in the day but now it's just stupid pony crap with no real regular game play like 99% of pony servers nowadays - only real exception being pf2.

Any particular reason why, given the usage of the server over the past several months, you actually needed a VPS?  I understand the benefits and drawbacks of vps vs dedicated vs shared, but in SFO's case it's not worth the added extra expense given our use.  Furthermore, VPS's are not best suited for FPS type games, it's better suited for things like Minecraft.

The goal was to run multiple games. I was running multiple Source-based servers, Minecraft, BF1942, Wolfenstein ET, and Starbound servers at one time during the life of this server. It also ran the database server for HLStats and SourceBans because Dreamhost doesn't like persistent DB connections from outside their network.

That makes no sense at all. Pretty much ALL of the shared hosts use VM's. VPS is simply a marketing term for leasing an entire VM to someone. Plus, VPS'es are given more resources than shared hosting so I really cannot see how VM's are not "suitable" for FPS servers. Cost effective? That's another story, but there isn't any technical limitation to FPS servers by running on a VPS.

I must have misread the dialogue that was taking place then on the other site.  It was a discussion with people from companies who rented out servers for gaming about servers and their various uses in certain gaming genres.  One of them said that FPS games were not as well suited as opposed to something that could be more "intensive" like minecraft.  Clearly, I didn't post up all the relevant information in my post and I'm too lazy to try and find the original FAQ topic.

Regardless, why not just pay the $20-25 per month to continue to run the server and not have all the bells and whistles?  Right now we don't need HLstats (is that even still updated?) and most of these servers give at least some free hosting anyways right?  I know I had webspace and what not for fast download and sourcebans when I picked up my server for my team a year ago or so.

Because it's still $20/mo that I can't afford to spend. Seriously, I'm even cutting off my cable TV right now.

Damnit, I wasn't able to save an image of my stats signature. Not sure what I'll put there instead.
