(In all seriousness though, this is Steam. You should be able to figure out WHY we like it so much by yourself. )

Yes and no.

The FAQ pages on Steam official site might suffice for future reference.

Steam is the technical term for the gaseous phase of water, which is formed when water boils. Technically speaking, in terms of the chemistry and physics, steam is invisible and cannot be seen; however, in common language it is often used to refer to the visible mist or aerosol of water droplets formed as this water vaporcondenses in the presence of cooler air.

To genuinely help (I was new at one time too :P), Steam could basically be summarized as "Xbox Live/Playstation Network/Nintendo Network for PC". It's a program you download and install which allows you to buy games online and download them to your PC. All games you buy are linked to a Steam account which allows you to download them as many times as you want on any computer you log onto Steam with (Outside of any other logins the game itself may contain). It typically has many games on sale, mostly indie games you'll buy for $0.99 to $5.00 and end up never playing for much more than a half hour. Steam also allows you to chat with friends, and whenever you play a game, it has an "Overlay" you can access by pressing Shift and Tab at the same time, allowing you to chat with friends without having to close or minimize your game.

Steam is such a common gaming platform on PC that many games, even boxed games you can buy at a store in real life, will register to Steam.

There are many other programs with similar uses such as Origin (Owned by EA) and uPlay (Owned by Ubisoft), though Steam is the most popular due to having been out for a far longer time and having the largest catalog of games, alongside many seasonal sales.

Hope that helps, I tried to avoid confusing bias other than the joke about Indie games. :)
