ballisticwaffles
HEY GUYS, REMEMBER WHEN SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS WAS A FUN GAME THAT WASN'T THAT HARD? GOOD THING THAT GAME WASNT FUN AT ALL, RIGHT? Game difficulty has nothing to do with how fun it is. This whole modern mindset that a game must be hard to be fun is both disgusting and insulting to games that are fun without being miserable to slosh through. Arashikage
Jeez, what did I get myself into, alright but here's my thoughtful comment on this. When I play a video game, I want to have fun. If it's easy, but fun, I will enjoy playing it(IE Lego Star Wars, Lego Marvel, Just Cause, ORION, Sniper Elite). If it's challenging but fun I will also enjoy it(Planetary Annihilation, DayZ, Victoria II, Crusader Kings II, PAYDAY 2, Watch_Dogs, ARMA 2, ARMA 3, Mass Effect 1 2 and 3, and Starbound) This being said, I also disagree that games are becoming too easy. Sure, you have the no skill required easy games, but we've had these games forever. Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Tiny Tower, but some of those games are actually fun. I have been known to have some fun on Tiny Tower, or Call of Duty MW2, but that's because of the content. If you have a game that's fun, it doesn't matter whether it's easy or hard. What it sounds like when you complain about something like these is someone who goes "BACK IN MY DAY WE HAD TO WALK TO SCHOOL UPHILL BOTH WAYS IN THE SNOW FIGHTING OFF THE INDIANS" which is exactly what grandkids look at and go "Okay Grandpa, now go back to bed."

Vy'drach
She's saying you're babbling now, basically. You're saying things with no coherence and then when she asks for clarity, you repeat lines that have nothing to do with anything. And it's been explained time and time again that difficulty =/= fun. Extremely difficult games are a category of gaming that some find fun, others not so much. Take for example what sits upon the throne of the difficult games genre, the Souls series. They're not the most difficult games, but they're certainly very popular with a rabid fanbase that adores them, myself included. The Souls games at no point hold your hand, quite the opposite actually. You play through them asking when they're gonna fuck you over next. However, as much as I love the Souls series, it's not the difficulty that made them great, it was the game mechanics, the PvP (which I'll elaborate on in a minute), and the setting, which includes the interpretive story and stand out characters that actually didn't have a whole lot to go on but still carved a place in your heart (sometimes rather literally). The PvP in the game works like this, if you're in human form in Demon's/Dark Souls, you can be invaded by another player, they enter your world and their sole goal (usually) is to kill you. Enemies in game (which normal enemies are often times harder than the bosses of some other games) are on their side and can't hurt nor be hurt by them. Sometimes you can be invaded by multiple people simultaneously. In Dark Souls 2, you don't even need to be in human form, you can be invaded regardless. And btw, not being in human form means you have less maximum health, considerably if you've died a lot (not that hard to accomplish). However, I have played easy games and had just as much fun. It's not the destination that matters but the journey, and as long as it was a wild ride to the end that's what matters. Now stop sweeping people saying this under the rug and insinuating it's off topic. Are games too easy nowadays? No. In fact, there's probably more hard games nowadays than before simply because back them, difficulty was artificial, usually through the extra lives and then game over system. Nowadays, we have games in the same genre that have unlimited continues that make the older ones seem like they play themselves, utilizing actual difficulty often times developed through better development systems. For example, compare Super Mario Bros. to Super Meat Boy.

LazerMaster5
I also believe difficulty has not much of a correlation with fun. For example, Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis is so difficult, it is impossible to get past the first level, yet it is so much fun and keeps you coming for more. A better example would be comparing GTA IV to Saints Row the Third. GTA is amazing, yet its gunplay is such a challenge, for you do not have much more health than your enemies. This keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to survive the shotgun cops who take you out with one shot. On the other end, in Saints Row, you have significantly more health, and the enemies die so easily. You also have more cash and cheaper ammo, making large shootouts no big deal. It is over the top as minibosses come to fight, choppers cloud the skies, and your fellow gansters join in. This is more of a big blast sort of the game, over the top to the extreme and not too difficult. That being said, both games are really awesome, and I highly recommend both. Different games in the same category but different difficulty can be equally awesome. Difficulty does not dictate enjoyment or fun, although tougher games make you more aware of what is going on. DZComposer
I really don't see this thread going anywhere positive, so I'm just going to put it out of its misery. Also, Protip: Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them off-topic. :lock:
