Xbox Mod

hoo

Question

So I recently have gotten my stuff to mod my original Xbox console. I have 007: Agent Under Fire (I like the James Bond franchise, so I just happened to have it. The normal one too.) The controller outlet thing, a female usb port, and a flash drive.

However, the female outlet has 4 ports. I have seen people mod with the flash drive and female port method, but everyone had a single port outlet. Will it matter if I have 4? I was wondering if it would, considering everyone had just one. I don't want to splice the cords if it won't work.

Kind of a dumb question, but ya' know. Better safe than sorry.

IT WILL NOT WORK!

You need one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-A-Male-A-Female-Extension-Cable/dp/B001TH7GV4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409862570&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+extension+cable

The 4-port device is not a "cable," it is a hub. The USB ports are soldered onto a PCB and there is circuitry to allow a device to see it as multiple ports. The Xbox probably can't drive the hub, so it won't work.

Also, make sure you do the splice right. Modding forums are notorious for telling people to splice wires the wrong way, usually twisting the wires together and then taping over the twisted wires. Twist-n-tape is a terrible way to splice. It gives inconsistent electrical connection and can easily slip and become disconnected.

Use solder and some heat shrink for best results. Tin the wires, make little hooks, put the heat shrink on, solder the hooks together, slide the heat shrink over the joint and heat it up with your iron to seal the splice. If you don't have heat shrink, you can use tape, but heat shrink is better and you should solder it. If you've never done this before, practice with some scrap wire first (IE wire from the rest of the cables you are sacrificing).

BTW, use one heat shrink for each USB inner wire and then put a larger one over the whole joint.

Wait I don't understand. What exactly do you hope to accomplish with these odds and ends?

Splice the cords, insert the drive with the hacked save file, copy it to the hard drive, load the game, load the save, then evo X will boot. Somethin' like that. I was just wondering if the number of female usb ports would mess it up.

Your guess is as good as mine. Why not try it out for yourself? It would be silly to be asking if something would work when you have the means to do so, and there is no risk.

Alright, I was just wondering because this isn't my cord. I didn't want to mess anything up or else I would be screwed.

Well a hub is a hub is a hub. The number of ports really shouldn't matter long as you don't plug anything else in it besides what you need.

Thanks DZ. I'll just go to the local Walmart or Walgreen's and pick one up rather than waiting for one to ship.

For me, that doesn't seem to be an option, I don't have access to any of this stuff. I'll just have to stick with the usual "twist-n-tape" and try to make it work. If it does, I'll just have to keep it still to avoid any slipping and screwing it up.

I didn't realize at all what you were trying to do, so sorry I couldn't be much help.  Looks like DZ got it handled though, so good luck to you!
