Predator and Prey

Ashlin didnt have time to stop, nor was she going to. Bracing herself, she shouldered into the soldiers,  knocking one down and pushing the other ine aside. Coming out ofthe encounter sprinting, she frantically tapped on her data pad and accessed her ships controls. The engines came to life a few feet infront of her and the docking lock disengaged; the canopy raing to reveal the cockpit. A little hope began to raise inside her, but just like the smirk it quickly disappeared as bullets erupted around her. The soldiers had recovered quicker then she thought and looked pretty pissed. Tail whipping back and forth, the desert fox began to climb up her ship, but as she reached the cockpit a disruptor shot grazed her side and sent her head first into the pilots seat.

(Just so you know, the Tal Shiar troops aren't using ballistic weapons - they're using disruptors, unless you mean to imply someone else that you control shot Ashlin.)

(What effect do disruptor weapons have against an organic material? )

(I cannot find a site that accurately portrays what effects Romulan disruptor weapons have on organic material. All I can tell you is that they are high-energy weapons that leave the victim with severe disruptor burns, much more severe than Phaser or Plasma burns, and when set at maximum setting [which these Tal Shiar troops do not have active, thankfully] can vaporize a target in a second or less. They are weapons not to be taken lightly. If Ashlin was hit with a disruptor beam or pulse, assuming it didn't hit a vital area, she would have a nasty burn and some bleeding to take care of quickly. I hope this explains what you want to know.)

(That's my cue!)

A look of relief flashed over Neil's face as Tovan successfully activated the beacon and orders of a hasty tactical retreat were given.  There was no way that they'd be able to hold out for much longer here, or at least not without large-scale reinforcements with heavy artillery to boot.  Breaking into a sprint to keep up with the others, all that met his ears was the sound of boots pounding the pavement.  Allowing the adrenaline that he had built up to take hold, the raccoon turned and fired his pistol back at the persistent Tal Shiar, afterward putting the rest of his energy to getting toward the front of the pack.  What he lacked in height and stature, he made up for in speed and relative agility!

"Where...the...hell...are...these...things...docked...anyway?" he called out between breaths, not entirely sure what direction they were supposed to be heading in.  He made the mental note of keeping his tail as close to his body as he could; he didn't need to inadvertently get it caught somewhere.

( Yes it does thanks! I edited my post above.)

"Son of a bitch!"

Ashlin righted herself and smacked the button to close her canopy, a few more shots flying around her ship. She let out a groan, not wanting to touch or even look at her side, the smell of burnt fur and skin reaching her nose.

"Trask, Im at my ship. What is your location?" She barked through her comm, raising her ship from the docks and taking off.

''Ash! You made it? About damn time, if you ask me,'' Sal said over the comm, running to keep up with Trask, keeping
his surroundings in check to make sure we aren't ambushed. ''What's your st...'' Sal begun, but when he saw Ash's ship
lift off into the sky, he grinned.
''We have an advantage now,'' He mumbled. He exclaimed when he saw a group of hostiles hiding on the roofs. Sal pointed
toward them and brought his rifle up.
''Contact on the roofs up there! There's four of them!' He shouted, beginning to fire on one of them.

"Forget 'em!" Trask exclaimed to Sal as they stepped into a clearing where one of the shuttles were landed. "Get on board! Now!" As he ushered the others on board, he spotted a pair of Elachi drones and a team of Tal Shiar troops. "Contact rear!" he shouted. "Get on the shuttle! I'll cover you!" he opened fire on the Elachi drones with the disruptor of his weapon, nailing the drones as they made for the group. The Tal Shiar noticed, and started shooting. Trask was quick to fire bursts from his weapons main gun, sending them scurrying for cover. "Get on!" he shouted to the others.

"Trask,  I need to know..." But her question had already been answered. Ashlin spotted the groupin a clearing running for the shuttle, soldiers and drones closing in on them. "Im coming in." She steered her ship over to the Tal Shiar troops on the roof, hailing a rain of green bolts down on them, hitting some and sending the others to the ground. Letting out a grunt of pain, the fox piloted her ship up and began a circle pattern around the shuttle.

Sal bounded up the ramp into the shuttle, taking potshots at the Tal Shiar's that were on the roof. He gave up and slumped down into the control seat of the shuttle, keeping his rifle held in one wing. Scanning the controls with his beady eyes, he could tell he had no idea of working this advanced techonlogy. He groaned in disgust. Wait, maybe that racoon...

''Hey! Neil!'' Salto shouted. ''Could use a wing here with the controls!''

"Don't bother!" Trask exclaimed, firing another burst at the onslaught of Tal Shiar troops and Elachi drones, "I'll be flying! Tovan, Neil! Get a move on!"

"Why?, these guys are the friendliest folks I've met this side of the colony!" Neil muttered sarcastically as he ducked into the ship, but not before taking a few shots upward at the incoming enemy troops.  Maintaining his position just behind the door in case they were boarded by hostiles, he turned at Sal's call and pondered the query.

"I would give it a shot, but I don't think Trask'll be too happy if I scrape it against the curb!"  Humor was one of the raccoon's coping mechanisms to tell the truth; a laughing facade hid a scared-shitless existence!  His tail hung limp behind him and his ears laid back against his head - he was more than ready to never see Virnat again.  He had just enough knowledge of ship flight and control to get them by if the circumstances called called for it, and he sincerely hoped that he wouldn't need it.

"C'mon guys, we wait any longer and none of us are getting off this planet." She swooped low again, firing at the troops around the shuttle before pulling up to miss a building. Shots hit her ship from the back and she banked left hard, noticing a few drones tailing her.

"Tovan! Into the shuttle!" Trask called out. He reloaded his weapon, then fired short, controlled bursts at the advancing enemy as Tovan dashed into the shuttle. Trask was the last into the shuttle, pushing Neil along to get inside and behind the controls. The doors shut, the cabin pressurized, and Trask and Tovan piloted the ship up and out of the atmosphere. As he did this, Trask opened a comm line to Ashlin. "Ashlin, I hope to god you can keep up; follow me to the Retribution's Thunder." Trask led several other shuttles away from the carnage ravaging Virnat, to an area in orbit that, though hidden from sensor scrutiny by high-metal content asteroids and wreckage, seemed to hold little of value.

"Where is it, Trask?" Tovan asked. Trask didn't answer directly, instead switching to a coded radio band.

"Clara... yIchu'Ha So'wI," Trask said. Tense moments ticked by as nothing happened.

Finally, a female voice responded to Trask's command, "Glad to see you haven't forgotten me, Subadmiral." At the same time, a warship de-cloaked before them:

"Comrades... welcome to the Retribution's Thunder," Trask said.

"I thought this ship had been decommissioned," Tovan commented as Trask piloted the ship toward the hangar bay, unaware that the team's radio was transmitting to Ashlin.

"It didn't feel right, letting this ship be decommissioned," Trask explained. "So I bought it. Turned it from a military ship to a mercenary one. Set me back significantly, but it was worth it... good thing, too, considering what happened today. Ashlin, did you take any hits? Do you require medical attention?"

The wheels were in motion now, and as Neil brushed himself off after recovering from being shoved aside, albeit for a good reason, the thing that met his eyes was unlike anything he had seen before.  Unable to hide his intrigue, the raccoon moved up to get a better view through the canopy of their current vessel at the significantly larger one before them.  The Retribution's Thunder was a sight to behold, that could be said with certainty.

"I bought it, he says.  How much does it take to pick one of these up from the auction block?" Neil murmured as he glanced around their small transport shuttle for anything that might be useful in the future.  Spying the tin box of a first-aid kit behind one of the clear cabinet doors, he strolled over, retrieved it, and casually slipped it into his coat's interior pocket for safekeeping.  Of course, he couldn't resist taking some of the silverware next to it as well; they were nice and shiny, after all.

Ashlin followed the shuttle all the way to the Retribution's Thunder, gazing up at it with awe. She would of liked to take a better look at it, but the still seering pain in her side pushed her to land in the hanger. Biting her bottom lip, she held back a wimper, trying to push back the pain and hide it behind a stone face.

"Uh, y-yeah. I got hit." The canopy raised on her ship and the vixen half jumped half fell out onto the hanger floor, hunching over and grabbing her side. "And it kinda burns like a bitch."

(Sorry, been busy again. You can blame my work experience this time around though.)

Salto could do nothing but stare in wonder at the massive ship that had just materializeed out of nowhere, and was
now looming before them.
'''...Mio Dios...'' He murmured, clearly at a lost for words. ''I never thought that warships could look this big
up close, and I've seen some big stuff in my life.'' He commented, preening back his head feathers covering his eye.
Sal could feel something wet running down his forehead trickle onto his wing. Sal looked at it, and gasped. He was
bleeding!
''Dah!'' He exclaimed, alarmed. He never took a hit during that firefight down on Virnat, so how did he get it...?
Then he realized. A full half hour without realizing?!
Sal looked at Neil and gave him a snide look. He was annoyed that that racoon had caused him an injury by knocking
him down. Sure, that action saved his life, but he was now bleeding because of that.
''You owe me a handful of nuts for this. And a bandage,'' He sneered, covering his bleeding forehead with his wing.
When heard Trask ask Ashlin if she needed medical attention, Sal piped up:
''Don't mind fixing me while you're at it?'' He asked. ''I got a bleeding forehead here. Doesn't seem too bad, but
this is beyond the minor cuts, scratches and whatnot I had to put up during my nomad life. Gotta keep my wings in
prime form, or else I'll be stuck on the ground.''

"I'll keep that in mind," Trask said as he landed the shuttle in the hangar bay. Other shuttles landed nearby, all filled with terrified refugees.

"Ashlin, head for medbay - the holographic crewmen will show you the way," Trask said. He looked to Sal and added, "You might want to head there, too. Once you and Ashlin are patched up, head for the bridge. Tovan, Neil... follow me. And don't worry that the hangar doors are still open - the Hangar atmosphere is contained by a magnetic containment field."

Trask exited the shuttle as it powered down, slinging his H1M1 as he went. The hangar doors closed slowly as Trask headed out of the hangar, but Trask never once looked in that direction. Once the hangar doors closed, the Retribution's Thunder shimmered as it engaged it's cloaking device, and was gone again. Inside, nothing changed as the cloaking device engaged.

Ashlin nodded with a grimace and followed the crew member to the med bay.Once she was there, she finally built up the courage to look at her wound, removing paw. The fur on her side was singed  and there was a bald spot where the bolt glanced her. The vixens flesh was red and blistered, burnt and melted in some spots. "Shit" She growled.

"Disruptor burn," the holographic medic said. "You're lucky the beam only grazed you; most patients don't survive a direct hit by a disruptor beam." he went about treating the wound and asked, "Who are you, if I may ask? I've never seen you before on the Retribution's Thunder, and I know everyone who's ever been here."

Trask and Tovan kept leading the way through the dark and dimly-lit halls of the Reman vessel. "I hope you can forgive the darkness," Trask told those behind him. "Back in my stint in the Romulan Military, the Remans that served here weren't comfortable in the light."
