New character information in SSB3DS Trophies.

Andross's state pre-64 seems to be a plothole even in the main canon--64 states that he tried taking over Lylat before he got banished (which would align with the trophy's description), Command disputed that.

e: Peppy's trophy says he was an army officer that became a navigator, and that Leon is a sniper and Wolf's "most trusted ally". This is really interesting, they're actually making an effort to include character backstory details here.

Double posting for organization. Here's the character trophy descriptions as I find them, because I'm bored:

Fox

Fox is the leader of the mercenary unit Star Fox, often enlisted to defeat the evil Andross. His piloting skills are top notch, but in Smash Bros. he brings speed and fast attacks to the battle. His reflector move allows him to turn projectile attacks against his foes, increasing their power for a punishing blow.

Fox (Alt.)

Fox is at home in the air, and many of his moves, like his up smash, Flip Kick, will send foes up there. It's great for KO'ing a damaged opponent. Another handy move is his up special Fire Fox. The flames that surround Fox deal damage to nearby foes, and you can launch yourself in any direction once charged.

Falco

A talented pilot and part of the Star Fox team, Falco can be a bit rough around the edges. He once led his own galactic gang before joining up with Fox. In Smash Bros., his ability to jump high and deal damage in the air makes him a powerful threat, and his thrown Reflector can catch foes by surprise.

Falco (Alt.)

Falco's Blaster looks identical to Fox's at first, but actually it's quite different! The beams Falco fires deal more damage and cause the victim to flinch, but at a slower rate of fire. Considering Falco's lineage, it's not all that surprising that he can fire faster while airborne.

Krystal

As befitting her name, Krystal was once imprisoned in a giant crystal. After rescuing her, Fox welcomed her into the team, where her telepathic abilities proved invaluable. She and Fox also became romantically involved. Did her telepathic powers help or hinder that relationship?

Slippy Toad

This mechanic is a valued team member, analyzing enemy shields and spotting mines. That might seem like a job for a calm, cool soldier, but Slippy's more of a frantic, panicky type. This behavior only annoys the Star Wolf team...right? He and Fox are old classmates and good friends.

Peppy Hare

A former army officer who's since become a navigator. The instructions he transmits to Fox and co. have proven invaluable time and again. Peppy was part of the team when it was led by Fox's late father, James, and Peppy supported Fox when he took over leadership of Star Fox. Perhaps he knew this was James's last wish.

Wolf O'Donnell

Wolf used to fight in Andross's Army, where he tangled with Star Fox in many a dogfight. After Andross's exile, he went his own way and formed a mercenary team called Star Wolf. He and his eternal rival Fox have even fought on the same side from time to time... but inevitably, they always meet again as enemies.

Leon Powalski

Star Wolf's resident sniper. When he finds his mark, he takes them out with--what else?--his long chameleon tongue!...OK, you got us; he uses a rifle. Maybe. We haven't watched him do it. Anyway, he's a merciless foe you don't want to cross, but if he's with you, he'll never let you down. He's Wolf's most trusted ally.

Andross

A gifted scientist who worked for the Cornerian Defense Force. Banished to the planet Venom for his extreme research methods, he attacked the Lylat System to exact revenge but he was defeated by Star Fox. When summoned, he will aid you in battle by spewing polygon slabs from his mouth.

Andross (True Form)

The true final boss of Star Fox 64, Andross has turned himself into a bioweapon. His face and hands have exploded, revealing a giant brain with eyes that move independently and fire laser beams. When he goes down, he'll self-destruct and try to take Fox with him!

This is certainly interesting. Forgive me if its something I should know already, but do we know how trusted and high ranked Wolf was in Andross's army now that we know this?

Oh! And I didn't know Leon was a sniper. That only further peaks my curiosity.

I wouldn't count on that. Miyamoto has already explicitly stated that the new game will not be focusing on story. (Probably for the best.)

Do you have a source? That would kill me, as that's one of the things I so badly desire. Assault left me wanting even more after how story focused it was.

I imagine that it was the same as rank that Starfox is to the cornarian army. Or at least General of some kind I bet.

Double posting for organization. Here's the character trophy descriptions as I find them, because I'm bored:

That's weird because my Falco trophy says:

"Ex-gang leader, ace pilot and comrade of Fox, Falco Lombardi might play it cool, but he's burning with passion on the inside. In this game he excels at jumping and aerial combat, and the way his Reflector move flies forwards can catch foes off guard. Add to that his balanced array of attacks, and it's clear that Falco's a real threat."

Guys, the Wolfen trophy:

"Star Wolf's all-range fighters were designed by an evil scientist (Andross) and a truly shameless mechanic (Pigma). Still, leaving aside the designer's personal qualities, the Wolfen's performance and careful design make it truly stand out. In fact, its turning ability and high-gravity resistance surpass even the Arwing."

Huh, the European copies must have different text. It's basically saying the same thing but phrased differently, that's kinda neat.

Pigma says the following on JP Venom II when he's blasted without being shot down:

"It's no use! I put lots of cash in this."

Yeah that's totally cool! I'll try and collect EU versions for comparison and maybe I can make a chart in the first post of this topic for reference!

Its strange how they gave new background details on certain characters....

I want to get exited but i can't knowing how smash has nothing to do with the series's future but i remember Melee had trophies of upcoming games like Pikmin and Animal crossing. It was cool how the developers were advertising by using trophies in-game,  so its a possibility that these descriptions may actually be meant as cannon unless the next Star Fox game will be a reboot.

So, two claimed trophies popped up on Arwingpedia. Here's Pigma's:

“Pigma is many things. He's a traitor who betrayed Star Fox and then convinced Wolf to form his own mercenary team, Star Wolf. He's greedy and cowardly, and eventually Wolf kicked him out of the team. He's also got some good traits, though! Like...um... How about...? No, that isn't…â€

And here's Andrew's:

“A former member of mercenary Wolf O'Donnell's commando unit, Star Wolf. As Andross's nephew, he's not shy about throwing his weight around despite being an inexperienced pilot. This chilled his relationship with the rest of the team, and eventually they gave him the boot.â€

Wait, so they're claiming Pigma designed the Wolfen?

I really need to find some more Japanese canon stuff and get it translated.

Why would Nintendo bother giving new character background information on a franchise they barley create games for?

Why shouldn't they? Number of games shouldn't dictate character building.

The things I've recently learned about Pigma make me see his actions in SFAs a lot differently. Sure, his motivations are the same, but he's not the opportunist I originally thought he was. He plays the long-game. If the trophy's claims are true, he probably rivals Slippy in intelligence. He's cold and calculating. Seeking to manipulate others to increase his own wealth and influence. This explains his actions in SFAs. He tried to play the Aparoids. Unfortunately for him, he didn't know their true nature until it was too late. It makes me like his character more (though not him as a person).

This series seems to love its flawed geniuses:

Andross - Genius, but seems to have lost his grip on sanity

Slippy - Genius, but puts little forethought to his actions, getting him in trouble

Pigma - Genius, but blinded by his own greed

Pigma does quip that ''he put lots of cash'' into the Wolfen II if he's shot without being taken down on JP Venom 2. That suggests he did play a part in building those ships.

Anyway, of all the original Star Wolf members Leon is the only one who has no confirmed tie to Andross before Star Wolf.

Sorry for not clarifying this but i meant why would Nintendo give new character background info on smash trophies if they barely did with their past games.

Also now that you mention it, its interesting how the series does have flawed geniuses.

The only thing in the trophies that I have seen so far that I haven't seen in the lore somewhere is the thing about Pigma designing the Wolfen. Though, some of that trophy stuff comes from Japanese sources. Now, my knowledge of the Japanese lore is a litte weak, so it is possible there is a source for that, too.

I hope to someday have some kind of translated version of the complete Japanese lore, but that will take time and probably a member who speaks Japanese who is willing to help the cause as i don't have the money to pay for getting things professionally translated.

What about Wolf being a member of the Venom Army?

Finding someone who can translate Japanese to English is great but isn't there an app that can translate foreign text into English? Not sure if Google translator is the best fit tho

Most widely available/cheap software cannot match the intricacies of language that a bilingual human speaker can comprehend. You'll usually get an Engrishy translation if you use Google Translate for Spanish to English, for example.

Things like google translate -while useful-, aren't what you want to use for accurate translations. They'll get you in the ballpark of what is being said (most of the time), but exact phrasing and tenses will be off, resulting as OneUnder stated:
 Engrish

You can also try asking for help other forums like reddit, Japanforum, etc. Granted, things would go better if you showed your work and stuck to portions.

Your absolutely right but im sure you can understand the context unless you want a perfect translation just to be safe

Finding someone who can translate Japanese to English is great but isn't there an app that can translate foreign text into English?

These apps suck. For example, Google translates this:

"トレーニングモードに登場するタヌキを知ってる?実はアーウィンを開発した事で有名なスペースダイナミクス社のヤル・デ・ポン社長なんだ。"

as this:

"You know a raccoon that appeared in training mode? Actually, I'm a dial de Pont president of famous Space Dynamics, Inc. that it has developed a Irwin."

Sure, you can kind of get the jist of it, but some bits of text are worse.

If it's an image, you're kind of screwed because Google's app fails to recognize the text if the background isn't a plain color, and even if it is it misses letters a lot.
