ArwingFan
Starfox seems to be very experimental as a series, but why is that? Starfox and Starfox 64 are exceptions, both are pretty similar; campy on-rail shooters. However 64 has a more western twang. Adventures changed completely and became a tribal adventure game, Assault went for a more weird, pointy look and became a third person shooter. And lastly Command was, Command. And it seems like the HD game is going to change things up even more.
Ori
As cited somewhere in the old forum topics but I'm too lazy to look, Nintendo has the habit of always making a SF game accompanied by a new gimmick of the console. Super FX Chip, Rumble-Pak, GCN graphics, and touchscreen controls respectively to cite a few. You can also argue that Nintendo's writers aren't good in keeping consistency but then again it might be just they don't really prioritize it in StarFox games. Xidphel
64 added all range mode to a few bosses/planets. Assault took that too but also gave Fox the ability to run and shoot. Also, I'd like to see an example on how things are gonna change in the next one.
TCPeppyTc
Idk really. Is it that much more inconsistent than say the Zelda franchise where the timeline changes/is reversed with nearly every game? Its just a game thats trying to sell itself so the folks at Nintendo try to think of something different each time.
Dr. Orange
First off, remember that Star Fox on the SNEC was just an experiment at the time. Only fully finalized by 64. It's a rail and yadda yadda the end. Adventures was different only because the project was taken over by Nintendo and they were all like "nyeh foxman." similar with Assult. It was an attempt to bring back good ol' Starfox 64 while keeping some of the on ground game play. That and command was just ... yeah.
Drasiana
The only game that was really inconsistent in terms of game basis was Adventures, really, and that was because it wasn't conceived as a Star Fox game. Assault felt like a pretty natural (if poorly-executed) progression, a rail shooter with some on-foot segments (keep in mind the on-foot unlockables from SF64), and Command pulled a lot from the unreleased Star Fox 2 so it wasn't quite as out of left field as it might appear. As for Star Fox U it again seems like a natural progression rather than inconsistency, appearing to be going back to rail shooter roots but with some twists in there to suit modern hardware (gamepad co-op gimmicks for example). Like it's been mentioned, many of the games have been based around some kind of new hardware mechanic or gimmick. As for the writing, they've all had different writers who haven't communicated with each other on character continuity and long-term arcs
Giladen
Separate development teams with visions for the series. Even the games with Miyamoto's involvement are inconsistent.
Joseph.
The series only felt inconsistent when Adventures came out and it was amazing. As for the next Star Fox installment, I'm getting a feeling it will probably play as Star Fox 64 with some twist here and there. As for the teams roster i feel Krystal is going to be left out. I don't know why but after seeing the new Star Fox stage taunts in Smash 4, Krystal is completely left out unlike in brawl where she said a couple of lines
InfinitySquared
I dunno, the Mario franchise has done pretty much everything, but then again, when you have that many damn games you can do anything you want and not raise any eyebrows. As others have said, Starfox was born out of showing off gimmicks, so it's only natural that all the games feel different. Assault was probably the least gimmicky title, since it really didn't do anything but look pretty and try too hard to be 64.

Mario also has it's sub-series clearly marked as such with their being games like New Super Mario Bros. to draw in Mario who are looking for 2D Mario. Drasiana
Assault was supposed to tie into an arcade release that was silently cancelled at some point. Mario as a series isn't really comparable because it has entirely different goals as a series and its simplicity makes it a little more versatile than a series like Star Fox, which has a more rigid narrative structure. I wouldn't necessarily write Krystal out of Smash yet since we haven't seen what happens when Fox and Falco are in the battle. She probably replaces them in the taunts. Smash probably isn't the best place to base your speculation on SFU though. I think that's all the points I was gonna make yea yep ok

Eh i don't even know anymore. I'll just wait to see if shes in the taunt once the game comes out. However, we got Smash 4 for 3ds and the trophies give us new character background information. (Information never given to us in any star fox game) Strange Huh?
Battlechili
Perhaps it has to do with Star Fox's popularity; its not as big and popular as things like Zelda and Pokemon, so Nintendo has less to lose should changes put people off, so they feel more comfortable making more varied games and experimenting a little. I kind of like the inconsistency and hope Nintendo continues this trend.
