Ori
There's always the time where you stumble upon that one level where you look and say: "those guys put heart into this." The levels that are generally awesome or just hit a deeper chord on you. Then again, there's That One level which instead of hitting a deeper chord on you choses to downright hit extra hard and act punishingly. You might not hate it, but it hates you all the way to hell and back. And of course there's just those: the shitty levels. I'm curious as about what are the ones of people on SFO. As for myself: Best: Too many to name definitely, but unordered out of the very best; -Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies; Megalith. Everything in it. You get a squadron renamed after your callsign, the epic battle and THE MUSIC. -Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War; Sea of Chaos. Come on, I don't need to say why former enemies joining up side by side into a huge battle (followed by a massive joint strike in the enemy last stand) is awesome. And that freaking song. ;w; -Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War; Mayhem. Awesome BGM as Ace Combat standards dictate, huge air battle and enemy pilots shitting their pants as you earn your title, "The Demon Lord of The Round Table", add to the long list of things that make ACZ one of the most badass games of AC series. If not the one topper. -FEZ; the forest area ("Nature"). I don't know, there's just something moody about that one level that's just really soothing to play (as general rule of the game). -Mass Effect; Generally the whole game, but in special, Virmire. Most Difficult: -Portal: Prelude; The whole mod as default. -FTL: Faster Than Light; With the game's standards, The Last Stand. That fucking mothership. -Monster Hunter 3; Anywhere in the Volcano areas has overcomplicated, quick and generally asshat enemies to add to freaking heat/lava lingering damage. -Breath Of Fire IV; Fou Lu's Tomb. Won-qu, followed by "I" and "II". Maybe I just suck at that game but I always take quite a beating at those. xD -MegaMan X5; Zero Virus stages. ALL OF THEM. Worst: -MegaMan Star Force; Gemini Spark pre-boss stage. I might be bad at the game but the bulldozers coming of random, the random encounters and the objective changing places is rather annoying. >w< -Sonic Generations; Classic Crisis City. It's just somewhat boring to be honest... -StarFox Assault: Sauria. While not a huge sinner it keeps having you run in circles around the map. -Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War; Lying in Deceit. Refer to Assault. Just not a personal favorite, but what's glaring is that it's in an Ace Combat game, so that's saying something. Open maps are cool, but this one is just too open and targets are spread too far.
Owner/Technical Admin Sideways Posted November 30, 2014 Owner/Technical Admin Share Posted November 30, 2014 I agree with AC04. Megalith was greatly thought out. Renaming the whole squadron after your character, the music.. it was epic.
geoprimedonna
Best level: Starman Jr. in EarhBound and Goras in SFX64. Most Difficult: Andross in all the Starfox games. The worst: Tabuu. Pronto!
Vy'drach
Let me take a crack at this: The best for me, is the Maiden Astraea fight in Demon's Souls. The fight itself isn't anything spectacular, it's mostly against Garl Vinland, who fights like a standard NPC, just a rinse/repeat fight. The thing that makes it so great is the mood for the fight. You are the aggressor, you are the one attacking the characters who entered the swamp for altruistic reasons, attempting to stem the plague and help the inhabitants of the swamp by absorbing a Demon Soul and using the power to halt the plague, and Garl Vinland, her loyal body guard and implied lover. They are not aggressive, not attacking you unless you draw too close at which point Garl Vinland will attempt to repel you, the entire time they are pleading with you to leave and leave them in peace, for this is nothing for you to plunder there. For the first time in the game it's presented to you that you may not be the hero, your quest for power may not be a righteous one. It can be a truly heartbreaking fight, and that theme carried over beautifully into Dark Souls, where you encounter several tragic characters, the main ones being Crossbreed Priscilla and to an extent Chaos Witch Quelaag, who herself is evil, but her sister is not, and you have to kill Quelaag to continue, but she was the only one left for her sister, Quelaan A.K.A. The Fair Lady, who took pity on the people in the swamp and against her sister's orders took the blight into her body to cure those stricken, leaving her blind, sickly, barely surviving. But anyway, back to Maiden Astraea, here's a video showing the fantastic music with the dialogue added in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtE5CwOu07c And here is the actual fight: And a transcription of the dialogue, spoilered for size. When entering Go forth, Garl Vinland. May you be unharmed. Leave us, slayer of Demons. This is a sanctuary for the lost and wretched. There is nothing here for you to pillage or plunder. Please, leave quietly. If attacked This is our home. We have done no harm to you. Dear God, have mercy. Is not your abandonment of us punishment enough? How long must we weather this cruel fate? Cruel Lord… What more can you possibly take from us? Dear Lord… You are too cruel. You have abandoned us, is that not punishment enough? If you talk to her while Garl is alive Please leave quietly. Lest you face the wrath of my loyal follower. If you killed Garl Vinland You… You killed him, didn't you? Very Well, I can no longer resist you. Do as you like. Take your precious Demon soul. Garl Vinland You will not turn back, will you? I shall let no harm come to dearest Astraea. May you rot in the deepest depths of this swamp. How dare you persist in intruding upon our haven. You abandoned us long ago; what right do you have? We live humble lives. Leave us be! If you fall into the swamp Plunge to your death… And let the acid melt the flesh from your bones! When killed Dearest Astraea… I have failed you. If he kills you Ye covetous ones, let it be known. We shall defend our heart and home to the death. This moment from the game is one of the most memorable I've ever had in gaming history. I just felt downright... deflated. Just felt so down after that fight. This just sums it up nicely: For hardest: Once again, Demon's Souls. Specifically, Flamelurker. He's not the last boss in any way or anything, and he's not even a hard boss on paper, I just can not solo him for some reason, and I can't find a decent picture of him from in-game so here, have this fanart making him look way less "hnnnnggggg" that he actually is for me. And worst: Lemme see... Call of Duty: World at War, the last level on the hardest difficulty with the never ending stream of Nazis with their unlimited grenades and you have to destroy three AAA guns, and it doesn't checkpoint well. You will legitimately have like thirty grenades on the opposite side of the box you're hiding behind.
Drasiana
The Good: Obligatory Star Fox mention goes to Sector X for being creepy as balls, Titania and Aquas for being gorgeous, and Venom I for being an amazing climax. Dragon Age II's Legacy and Mark of the Assassin DLC missions owned hard, and makes me a little sad because the vanilla game could have owned that hard too if EA hadn't crunched them on release date. Lots of good atmosphere, funny writing, and stuff to do. Tossing in a mention of Sonic Adventure 2's Pumpkin Hill since tiny Halloween-obsessed me spent an ungodly amount of time fucking around in there, goofy rap soundtrack be damned. Oblivion's Shimmering Isles expansion because Sheogorath. Likewise, Skyrim's Daedric Relic mission for Sheogorath. Also for Sanguine's, since The Hangover: Tamriel was something I never knew I needed. Despite the endless dicking around, Twilight Town from Kingdom Hearts II had some of the most gorgeous, peaceful atmosphere in any game I've ever played. The Hard: ...I'm actually having trouble thinking about this one uhhhh I remember being completely stuck as fuck on the final boss in the first Lost Kingdoms for like, months. I beat her immediately after trying again after not playing it for awhile so I dunno what happened there. Dragon Age II gave me a weird annoying bit towards the final battle. I breezed through the final boss no problem but before her, you're fighting through random swarms of enemies, and for some reason this particular swarm, which is like a blood mage and a bunch of the same pansy-ass demons I've been fighting the entire game, completely slayed my ass every time I approached it. Like, destroyed within moments. I managed to survive it once I altered Fenris's behaviour so he'd stop charging headfirst into the demon swarm and getting himself owned, then proceeded to cut through Meredith like a knife in hot butter. Who knows. On the topic of Dragon Age, the dragons in Inquisition are terrifyingly hard even on the easiest difficulty. It's fun but jesus. The Ugly: Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts II. What human being with ears consented to allowing those godawful songs into the game? Fuck that noise, literally. Wait, not that literally-- Dragon Age: Origins had some really long-ass boring grindfest sections that really hamper the game for me still Gonna second Sauria from Star Fox Assault. There was really no point to that level, it was obvious filler that didn't even care enough to end with a bossfight. Just a halfhearted "go shoot these things to win the mission I guess" that rewards you with dumb shipbait and immediately segues into the game itself noting that Sauria was a useless distraction so the plot could develop offscreen.
CrypticQuery
Here's an example that will forever be seared into my memory due to untold amounts of trauma associated with it. Driver, on the PS1/PC, is an excellent game. Its tutorial level, however, is so stupidly difficult that I've only beaten it a handful of times, perhaps twice if I remember correctly, and that was out of countless tries. How the hell is the tutorial level the second hardest level in the game? (The hardest being the final level, which is to be expected.) This accurately sums up that frustration. On that note, one cool thing about Driver is that its intro cinematic was inspired by the first chase in the 1978 movie The Driver, which also partly inspired the opening to the recent movie, Drive.
Clearwater
I'm definitely agreeing with Orbi and OneUnder's posts above. But so many games, where to begin...? The Best: Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2/PS3): That game is pure crossover heaven. Square Enix have done a cracking job, especially with the one-on-one boss battles towards the end. Mario & Sonic at the 2010 Winter Olympics (DS): That freaking Adventure Tours mode... BEST. OFFICIAL. CROSSOVER. EVER. Ico (PS2): A great game with a very touching storyline. The Hard: Shadow Of The Colossus (Ps2): Finding each colossus can be hard and a little frustrating, seeing how you have to gallop from one end of the map to the over. Figuring out how to get to the top of each colossus is even more so. Super Hexagon (PC/Smartphone): We all know the reason for this one. The Bad: Spyro - Enter The Dragonfly (PS2/Gamecube/XBox): Oh God, there is SO much wrong with this game I can't even bear to begin teeling you what's bad about it. Hacker Evolution - Duality (PC): Don't get me wrong, this game is a great game, but with the devs ditching the console interface I'm more used to, this sparked a fair bit of controversy... valkiriforce
The moment I saw this thread I immediately thought about the last level of Gradius 2 for the arcade; mainly because I have Gradius Collection for the PSP and I'll never forget how many hours were wasted trying to get past that first barrier of gun turrets inside the mothership. The checkpoint is a little before that and it's got to be one of the worst checkpoints I have ever had to endure. To this day I don't think I've ever beaten that level. I have a better chance of just starting the whole game over again and playing through it in the hope that I'll fair better around those parts when they come along. Anyway, I think there are probably too many good levels I've played over the years that it's hard for me to filter through everything and sort it out in brevity here; I will say though that Contra III has always stood out in my mind if even just for the intro level. You have aliens jumping through windows, buildings crashing down, tanks, planes bombing the area, a giant alien turtle boss, all that jazz. It's just one explosive moment after another and it still impresses me after all these years ever since it first came out.

Dude, I LIVE for Driv3r. (Driver 3) But... In the game, there is a level where you have to basically race a semi, while doing that, you need to steal three cars, then you need to park them in the back of the semi. It was always THE hardest level for me. I've only beaten it once. Anyways, In Pokemon R/S/E, there is a battle with your rival on the route below cycling road. That was always the one Pokemon Battle that made me quit. I would take at least ten attempts before finally beating them. In the remakes they were pretty easy though, but dang. In Pokemon R/S, (again) I loved going into the Cave Of Origin and venturing into the deepest part of the cave to save the world. The music they put in there, and just that plain feeling of knowing you're about to save the world from a horrible death, is just plain awesome.
mjakob42
BEST Metal Gear Solid - Fight Against the Cyborg Ninja https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBzfERq-kBc To be 100% honest, the entire game could be my best gaming experience, but if there's one moment that really stands out it was the fight against the Cyborg Ninja. I remember getting to this boss battle and finding out it was quite difficult to beat this guy: I try every single gun, do an extremely low amount of damage, not working out. Let's try a different strategy! So, I cycle through the rest of my weapons and items...AHA! Chaff Grenade! The thing's a cyborg, so I should get plenty of good shots in while the Chaff Grenade is in effect!...aaaand he ducks so I can no longer hit him (this is the PSX version, remind you, so I can't go into first person with my weapon). So after, I shit you not, weeks of trying and exhausting every possible strategy, I go all-out and break down to hand to hand combat. "Good! Now we can fight as warriors - hand to hand! It is the basis of all combat. Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon!" HOLYSHITITWORKED. No walkthrough, no suggestion from a friend or backseat gamer, discovered all by myself, and it was a great feeling. That sums up my entire experience with the first MGS, but this moment stands out the most (also spoiler-free). HARD Doom 2 - Icon of Sin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPn1qBubb-0 I'm prepared to argue that this is the hardest boss in video game history. I've been playing the Doom games for a little over 10 years now - I hate to brag, but I know pretty much all of Doom and most of Doom 2 like the back of my hand, and earlier this year, I actually beat Doom 2. However, it's not gotten ANY easier - when I marathoned Doom 2 that weekend, I played the final level overnight trying to beat it. 8 at night to about 5 in the morning. 'Nuff said. Also, any Doom players here? Looking to marathon co-op sometime. WORST Kane & Lynch: Dead Men - Havana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H507ajsufK0&index=11&list=PLNAl-DRTtZVMY62nIjOmq8jqJQATQmvDZ Okay, I actually think this was a fairly underrated game - don't get me wrong, it has its issues, but this was always the kind of hard-edge crime-drama game I've always wanted (if only the flaws were ironed out).Yeah, the game has an awkward cover system and the hit detection can be extremely frustrating, but the level design is incredible ('dat dance club level). The characters, while (intentionally) not likable, are fascinating. The gritty atmosphere...the good outdid the bad for me, and I was really enveloped into this game. And then...you go to Havana... Right off the bat, I cannot find myself to be able to take this seriously - we went from gritty urban crime drama to super-soldiers in a generic third world country setting. In other words, we went from Heat to Commando. So, while I feel let down BIG TIME, I still need to beat this SOB of a game. Remember all those problems I mentioned earlier? This is where they really shine, so to speak, and then some! So, you've got enemies shooting at you with machine guns literally all over the place and they're commonly hiding behind rubble and in ruined buildings, so you really have to be on the lookout for the bad guys. And, like I said, awkward cover system and bad hit detection make this level way harder than it needs to be. Luckily, you have AI partners that can bag some baddies for you...right? Well, yeah, you do, but they get gunned down the moment they cross through enemy fire. Even worse, you need to keep your AI partners alive or else you have to start the level over again. Granted, you can revive them, but in this level, they die out in the open, and to heal them is a suicide mission - you're going to get slaughtered the moment you even try. I did manage to beat this level, but I had to command the AI dudes to stay put in a safe spot and I had to do this whole thing single-handedly, which took hours. Not saying anything new here, but there's legitimate challenge, but then there's challenge because the game's broken. No excuse. NO. F'ING. EXCUSE. InfinitySquared
I'm sure I can think of other accomplishments later, but I just beat the original Starfox at 2x speed on Path 3 (on an emulator). Ori
One to add to the difficult list; Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War - Mission #SP: The Gauntlet. You get to fight against all the aces you've previously seen. In one level, sequentially. And as a bonus you also have to beat freaking Mobius One himself as a last one. Really. The entrance of this last one into the level is also badass as hell by getting a quad-kill on YF-23 fighters. The reward for the mission borders 80k credits each successful run but still. It's quite the challenge. Also, if you fail, you get nothing at all. And you have to start The Gauntlet all over from the beginning.

It's quite the challenge. Also, if you fail, you get nothing at all. And you have to start The Gauntlet all over from the beginning. Are you sure? I didn't think it was THAT hard, I completed it on Hard difficulty on my second go around. I have the PS2 version of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War in case you were wondering. Here's a few more to add to the list: The Best: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (DS): While this game isn't as good as the vastly superiour Explorers Of games, it's still a cracking game in it's own right. AND THAT TWIST, where (SPOILER ALERT!) you get framed as the cause of the natural disasters and go on the run... Epic in every sense. Sonic Colors (DS): Fast. Furious. F*****g fun. T.R.O.N 2.0 (PC): A fantastic game, taking place 20 years after the events of the original TRON film. Some very, VERY original ideas, but what a pain in the ass that Disney Interactive no longer support that game. WHY?! The Hard: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee & Exodus (PC): Both games are classics in their own rights, but hell they are hard as frozen carbonite. I rage quitted about 5 times in the space of 3 hours with Oddysee during the trial at the Paramonia Temples. Kingdom Hearts 1 (PC): That final string of fights against Ansem are a pain in the ass, mainly because if you die ONCE, you have to start from the BEGINNING. And have to sit through the unskippable cutscenes. The Worst: Star Fox 64: I never liked the Aquas level, but it was the only way I was going to be able to get to Zoness, my favorite level in the game. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords (PC): Peragus. 5 hours of going back and bloody forth to find Kreia and Atton, board the Ebon Hawk, and get the hell off the mining station. Ugh, I hate it.

Clearwater
Man, and I liked the Aquas level. It was the best water level ever, and you got to fight a giant clam from hell! The problem I have with Aquas is instead of holding down the A button to fire lasers, you had to pummel it and the B button at the same time. Doing that for an extended amount of time wears my controller out. Plus, the entire level is mostly pitch black. If I didn't turn up thr brightness on my TV, I couldn't be able to see a bloody thing. Here's some more: The Best: TF2: Frontier's my favorite map. I like that feeling you get when you and your team are on BLU, the area you're in is cleared out and you're on the train. If you're hunched up next to the controls, looking behind you and crouching down, you feel like you're ridin' shotgun. The Worst: Mario Kart DS: W00t! Final corner of Rainbow World on 150cc Mirrored, first place! *blue shell explosion* Correction... Last.
Hidi
So, I played through Stair Fax Temperatures....Spent most of that time laughing at how terrible the Stair Fax aspect of everything was (We know why). The game was pretty good up until...Andross...Seriously, I have hated that boss so much. You lose more health than you can possibly hope to ever regain or work with long enough to defeat him half the time. I'll go watch a walkthrough....Or play TF2.EDIT: Oh, oh, but I'll add my best gaming experiences..The many glorious things that have happened as a result of playing competitive TF2.Seriously! Ori
Adding some to the list here. Best: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - The game in general, but we all know how File R-00 is; the MG RAY Fight. RULES OF NATURE. I know it's just the intro level of the whole game, but that doesn't make it any less badass. The whole boss fight with MG RAY was insanely over the top and basically the brainchild of the cyborg-ninja-fights-giant-mecha fans' deepest wishes. Add the perfectly timed and fitting soundtrack and you have a definitely badass experience to play through. And that song goes with LITERALLY EVERYTHING. XCOM: Enemy Unknown - The game in general. Tactical warfare games are a new one to me, and after getting brutally owned by the game AI (in easy no less! SHAAAAAME!), further attempts led into a successful result. Even on Easy, the game provided a decent challenge to me, and definitely hours of tense, engaging gameplay. Starbound - The game in general, but especially more since v. Upbeat Giraffe. A proc-gen sidescrolling sandbox with lots of new content and a huge modding community. I won't run out of things to do there anytime soon. Most Difficult: XCOM: Enemy Unknown - The game in general. It won't hold your hand through the rest of the game other than the tutorials. And it'll make that clear by brutally killing your soldiers due to your little mistakes until you get your shit together and get to the game's level. Jeroscope
Best: Space Armada from Star Fox SNES. Music, tension, and blowing through a motherf***ing dreadnought! Clearwater
Worst: FIRST LEVEL OF STALIN SUBWAY. THAT GAME SUX. You don't say. XD The Best: Lumino City (PC): As a game in whole, LC just ROCKS. The animation is utterly brilliant. Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast and PC): Just tearing around the city, not giving a flying s**t to the cops chasing you. How better can this game be than any Tony Hawk game? Much better. Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2): Those two boss fights at the end of the game where you go up against a horde of Metal Gear REX's, then that brilliant swordfight against Solidus Snake. Some of the best bosses ever. The Hard: Unreal Tournament 2004(PC): If you go up against the Skaarj clan lord at the end of the game at Skilled or higher and prepare to BEG for mercy. Sonic Heroes (Various; I play it on PC): The end of the Power Plant level, where you have to escape the rising energy tank. I suck at that bit. Robert Monroe
Just the most recent best moment for me right now because I can't be assed to think really hard about my 20+ years of vidya gaming to recall all the details. Just this year I finally got ahold of a Wii and a copy of Metroid Prime 3, some almost 7 years after it came out or so. I was a huge fan of the original Prime and Prime 2 is probably one of my most favorite games ever, and I always lamented my inability to play the conclusion to the series I so dearly loved. Being able to finally do so was cathartic on an almost spiritual level. I can't even remember the last time a game engrossed me so well and so completely, and how much I just had pure unfiltered FUN playing it. I went into the game knowing almost nothing because I refused to spoil myself hoping I'd get to play it one day, and that day finally came. 200% worth it, made me happy on a goddamn primal level. LazerMaster5
The best, worst, and most difficult moments can all be found in TF2. It is awesome to be MVP on a winning team. However, after a while, you get tired and start to struggle, to the point that it is no longer fun. Dying repeatedly without getting any kills or assists sucks. It is very difficult to leave spawn when the other team is camping you. So yeah, TF2 is the best, worst, and most difficult for me.
