LoneWolf
On Sunday morning at roughly 12:40 AM, the Hayatt Hotel was evacuated following reports of a strong odor of chlorine gas. The hotel was hosting the annual Midwest FurFest, a very large furry convention that draws several thousand attendees annually. 19 were hospitalized for nausea and other medical issues brought on by the chlorine gas, which was found to be emanating from chlorine powder either scattered in a stairwell or in some sort of glass jar (reports vary). Fortunately, everyone who was hospitalized seems to be doing fairly well and it seems no serious injuries occurred. It's unfortunate that this would happen and I'm blown away by how sadistic of a person you'd have to be to do something like this (especially considering that there are other nonfurries staying in the hotel which could include families with young children, even infants, who would be much more susceptible to the gas). The incident is being investigated as if it were intentional until proven otherwise. For who it may concern, the media has been fairly neutral regarding the fandom and is focusing on the fact that it's a gas attack rather than choosing to scrutinize the fandom. StarFoxfan-FUR_ever
That's gotta be horrifying for everyone involved. Like you said, there were sure to be tons of people at that hotel, ranging from babies to elderly individuals. This could have easily become a huge disaster had it not been discovered in time. Shouldn't this be classified as a WMD attack in the sense of mass poisoning?
Snys93
Damn, this is low. The species can be a hateful one indeed. Its stories like these that make me want to adopt a puppy or feed someone who needs a hot meal or something.
Who Knows
This Seems like an attempted massacre since they had no way of directing the Chlorine gas towards an individual And for the people affected by the Chlorine gas hopefully they recover soon. Clearwater
Oh, hell, I can't believe that really happened. I mean, who in the name of bloody hell would want to do such a thing? I mean, I see nothing wrong with Furries in ANY way. I'm glad to hear those who were hospitalized are doing just fine.
Okami Kitsune
How far humanity has come to attack a furry convention for no reason? This all makes no sense. I just want people who fell ill get better and it does not happen again.
LazerMaster5
It saddens me deeply how people are willing to kill others based on their interests. Seriously, people? What gives you the right to kill innocents that never did anything to you?
Brutus
It was probably a furry who had a beef against the convention for some personal reason.
Ori
So let me get this straight: > people implying furries ever did something for this 'retaliation' (?) >> "furfags pissed me because [insert reason] or no reason at all so gotta kill them" >>> goes through the trouble of finding a fur con and acquiring toxic chemical >>>> causes large disturbance with chemical that can potentially kill people (<-?!) >>>>> people implying furries are equally bad somehow ...I'm fucking done. In the most honesty I'm led to believe the attackers are missing a brain or really deserve a brutal revoking of their genetic poll participation. I have been around the fandom for long enough and last I recall of history, conflicts of interest in humanity being taken to warfare are frowned upon and not generally desirable. Especially when it involves barbarities such as usage of potentially lethal chemicals. Seems like people conveniently forget that there's no known excuse to 'remove' variations because it causes butthurt on people with negative brain mass. I can fairly understand disliking a concept because it doesn't ring good bells on you or if it's just not interesting, and it's just fair to not like something that doesn't match your ideals. But doing a terrorist act against those things crosses the line more than enough times and is pretty much in a head-on course towards a moral event horizon. Gassing people because they act like or say things you don't like isn't anywhere near being an acceptable way of showing your disapproval. I suppose it's hard to führerget how it went before. DZComposer
A very inept and ineffective attack. No attempt was made to aerosolize the chlorine. It was simply placed in the stair well on an upper floor rather than in the convention hall. My guess is that the victims were probably either asleep or going back to their rooms, given the time of the incident.I'm guessing it was a prank rather than a serious attack intended to kill or injure convention goers. Whether this prank was "for teh lulz" or an attempt to damage the convention's reputation remains to be seen.

The shortsightedness combined with the fact that it seems relatively spontaneous makes it seem like a stunt 4Chan (or at least, the stereotypical sadistic 4Chan user, perhaps not actual 4Channers) would pull, taking into consideration Cut4Beiber and some of their other "pranks". Mostly I'm just frustrated at their ignorance of the effects on those most susceptible to the gas. But then, that's pranksters. Ignorance + Danger to others + Prank now apologize later = Hilarious Hijinks

Robert Monroe
Anyone blaming 4chan is being silly. 4chan doesn't have a cohesive, collective structure. "4chan" doesn't "do" anything. It's merely a big, massive box where various people of all sides of the internet come to do a massive variety of things and interests.
TrishaCat
I saw this and I was surprised someone may have actually tried to hurt somebody or at least go through the trouble to do this. Its unfortunate however. This just isn't right. Ah yes, the good 'ol 4chan praise, even though plenty of raids, CP, and hashtags like #CuttingForBieber have been attributed to those who frequent there. I promise you 4chan is NOT a very structured ground full of people who actually would do this and plan this together. Things have come from there sure. In fact, I believe a decent bit of it comes from /pol/. But /pol/ is dead now so even if such did come from there it likely won't happen again. Furries aren't even that hated there. I may or may not go to that place regularly
Xortberg
Yeah, I wasn't actually trying to blame 4chan or imply they're all CP-trading scumbags or any of that shit Just mirroring Draco's defensive post with one that points out that 4chan has plenty of bad associated with it that justifies a lot of peoples' issues with it and that isn't made void by them doing the occasional good thing.

LoneWolf
Really I just wanted to throw out my idea of what sort of person would do this in some sort of colloquial way. Sorry if I offended any of you by doing so. I'm sure there's plenty of decent people over there misrepresented by the 1% of psychotic people that make the news. I was referring to the 1%. Understand that I'm not attacking you or even the site as a whole. Let's move on. Doesn't look like there's any news regarding this right now. Basically out of the media at this point. Fortunately, most sites refrain from bashing furries and some even reprimand those who are doing so because of this attack e.g. whoever created a Know Your Meme page the day the attack happened. Most sites are also referring to it as a terrorist attack, which, while it's partially for clickbait, also conveys how seriously this is being taken.
