So, Microsoft wants you to upgrade to Windows 10. And they're damn serious about it.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft held the consumer announcement for Windows 10. It was stressed repeatedly that they wanted everyone to upgrade. So they offered an incentive: Anyone with w Windows 7 or Windows 8 license can upgrade for free during the first year and all Win 10 licenses will be upgradable for life of the device (though I want to see some clarification for custom-built systems, I hope they don't make me have to buy a new license every time I buy a new motherboard or HDD).

Well, today they quietly revealed just how freaking serious they are: They will be pushing-out Windows 10 to Win 7 and Win 8 users through Windows Update! In fact, you can install the current Tech Preview through Windows Update if for some reason you want to run buggy-ass pre-release software for your primary OS (NOT RECOMMENDED), but for the moment you have to download a small file from Microsoft first.

I don't think I've ever been this genuinely interested in what Microsoft is doing.

While what I've seen so far doesn't answer all of my gripes about Windows 8, it does answer my biggest ones. I'll definitely be watching what happens. I really hope the shitty Microsoft ended with Steve Ballmer's stint as CEO.

What if we don't want Windows ten? since Windows 8 sucks, why should I even bother with your number ten series? 7 works just fine -_-

That's like saying, "Oh this M16 we made is fabulous!" *it sucks*

"Oh now our tenth model totally works! no joke!"

Yeah uh-huh sure, I believe that as far as I can throw you people.

To be fair, Microsoft has always been a shitty company. Remember that whole Internet Explorer controversy that happened in 1997-1998 where they actively went out of their way to kill Netscape and went to court for it?

Anyway, as for Windows 10. From what I've heard from beta testers, the reception of the OS is shaping up to be pretty good.

My only complaint from what I've seen of the OS, is the GUI. Why the hell does it look so primitive? It's a huge step back from the Aero interface in Vista/7, and looks even less detailed than the Classic interface.

Yeah, why not just let us all have oh I dunno, FREEDOM OF CHOICE? I like my Windows Seven just the way it is thank you.

Why are you so curious about it?

I agree, it really looks boring as hell. I thought they'd go for something just slightly more 3D, maybe similar to Windows 3.1, but for now it seems to be the exact same look with no other options.

I don't know why everyone is bitching. As a CS student, Windows 10 has more security options and is more optimized than 8 or 7. I'm currently running the test build on an extra computer and it works fine.

BTW: I don't think they ever forced the option on you. Hell, I had to dig in order to upgrade to 8.1 from 8. Why is everyone up and arms about A FUCKING OS UPGRADE?!

Because judging from a lot of reviews, Windows 8 is horrible.

Because it was meant for a tablet, not a desktop. People raised hell about it because they either A. Dont own a touch screen or B. have a stick up their ass about the fact that the UI changed.

Dude, it's different. Yes. We know. Calm thy mammaries.

The flat look is "in" right now. Even OSX Yosemite looks like that, and that's from Apple, the company where looks mean everything.

That's Windows 8, we're talking about 10 here.

Looking at what 10 is all about, it seems to be interesting.  I might take the upgrade, it depends how well it runs on older systems.  If it runs well, I'll have to put it on my laptop to check it out.

I don't really care that they're pushing it on Windows updates.  If I don't want it, once it goes live I'll stop my computer from updating automatically, just like literally everyone that doesn't want 10 is going to do.  Once 10 goes live they probably won't see the need to keep updating 7, because everyone that wants to stay in date will have 10, which is the most up to date.

Just for clarification, it would be pushed as an optional update, not an important one.

Will they make it so we can try it out, and if we do not like it, we can go back to using Windows 7? Windows 7 is well optimized for most games, and I like the feel of it.

If you want to use DirectX 12, you'll need to update.

Though DirectX is declining in relevance.

Windows 10 is going to allow your computer to come to live to exterminate you.

That's why they are so serious.

It's the apocalypse.

I've been hearing from a couple media sources that those who upgrade from windows 7 and 8 won't be able to get free updates compared to people who actually buy a commercial license. Is there any validity to this?

I'd suggest making a recovery drive before you install Windows 10. That way you can reinstall Windows 7 without loss.

There is not.

Sorry for the double post.

There was initial confusion with this because during the announcement they used the phrase "free for the first year" without furhter clarification and then proceeded to use the phrase "Windows as a Service" repeatedly.

Software as a Service (SaaS) usually means paying a subscription fee (Like with Office 365), so the "for the fist year" combined with "as a service" made it sound like there was going to be a fee involved after the first year.

Microsoft has since come out and said this is not the case. Your Windows License will receive upgrades for "the life of the machine," even if you upgrade from Win7.

So what you are saying is it is a free upgrade, no strings attached? Damn, if Windows 10 is as good as Windows 7 is now, I may have to consider upgrading.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "no strings attached," as there are still some things I'd like to see clarified, specifically with custom-build gaming rigs and what happens if I buy a new motehrboard or HDD.

But, it isn't some scheme to hook users into a subscription plan. Besides, Microsoft really didn't sell many upgrade licenses to begin with. The vast majority of Windows license sales are OEM (with new PC) or SLA (enterprise).

MS is seriously implying that this will be the last Windows [insert version name/number here] OS. I'd reckon that in a few years, they'll quietly drop the "10" from it and just call it "Windows."

Well, so long as Microsoft don't screw us over with Windows 10 starting directly into that Metro start page we all
love to troll from Windows 8, I think we'll be just fine.

It only does that if you're on a touchscreen device. It's kind of neat, actually. It can switch between touch and kb/mouse centric modes on-the-fly.

In KB/Mouse mode, there is a start menu again, though the items on the right side of the menu have been replaced with live tiles. The start menu can be maximized to take the whole screen if desired.

I built my PC, so I still have the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM installation disk I ordered off of Amazon a while back. I wonder if upgrading to Windoes 10 makes that disk obsolete, or if I can revert back if issues pop up.

I highly doubt they'd invalidate your Win 7 license. Microsoft has never done that with upgrade licenses. Not even shitty Microsoft of 15 years ago did that shit.

They specifically stated that if you want to revert back to Windows 7 or 8 to keep a system image or backup drive ready. Basically, you boot from a disc and format the drive, using your windows 7 install to overwrite the Windows 10 software.

But I think the important part is ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP DRIVE.
