The Next Star Fox Game: Speculation and Ideas III

What if instead of another reboot, they do a prequel? I'd like to see James Mcloud's backstory and how and why Starfox was assembled in the first place. And when the mk-1 Arwings were new and state-of-the-art tech.

Yeah idd. And ofcourse how James died. And not like the stuff from the Nintendo Power comic ;P

Is a prequel really necessary? The James arc is resolved; his death was avenged and Fox filled his shoes. I mean it would be nice to see the details of it but I don't think we really need it. The only prequel that I think would work is one that not only details the James thing but shows us why Star Fox and Star Wolf are rivals and maybe the thing about Cerinia but in all honesty I don't think any of that is deserving its own game.

Ideally what would happen is either this:

  • A new (reboot) game where the tutorial level doubles as a prologue, involving James

OR

  • A new (reboot) WiiU game alongside a prequel game on the 3DS.

What I want most is a sequel with the last pages of the 'StarFox novel'. All the holes filled, but still with an end that could be continued. So that over the years... maybe another StarFox will be released.

Here's my ideas. The story could continue after the easy ending causing an alternate universe I guess. This means we wouldn't have to ignore Adventures, Assault, and Command for those of you who liked those games. It could take place a few months after Fox defeated the fake Andross and now Corneria is trying to hunt the real Andross down. Andross has set up a base on Meteor sharing a similar look to the base he had in Star Fox 2. Since the Cornerian fleet is sent out all over the Lylat System looking for the mad scientist only a small portion of the fleet is defending Corneria. Andross' army is sent rushing in out of hyper space wiping out ships one after another enabling them to enter Corneria and to get revenge...again. General Pepper calls upon Star Fox to hold off the enemy fleet until reinforcements arrive. After doing so they head into Corneria where the enemy is going after General Pepper, save him, and go through entire Lylat System once again. As for the gameplay I think the U Pad can make things interesting. For starters, you can use the U Pad to command your team what to do. Each pilot has a certain ability they can do on your command. Slippy can repair your ship, Falco can help you shoot things down, and Peppy can tell you the best way to kill an enemy by telling you where their weak point is and how many shots it would take to kill them depending on what kind of lasers you're using. Even characters like Bill and Katt can have their own abilites such as Bill using his squad to do a Nova Bomb air strike and Katt gathering enemies on her tail making it easier for you to not get fired upon and get bonus points. You can switch between vehicles as well depending on the planet you're on. The way I see a Star Fox game with a longer story mode is to add acts like in Sonic the Hedgehog. There could be 3 acts per Planet. Remeber how in Sector X how there were parts where you could choose to go left or right? Well I think they should add more of those for each act so you could find secrets and stuff adding some replay value. That's my ideas for a new Star Fox game. I don't really see a prequel about James McCloud working out cause they just went straight to Venom to find out what Andross was doing, Pigma betrayed the team, and who knows what really happened to James. Okay, now I'm done...

Not only did you double post, but you also typed the paragraph twice.

Aside from that, that sounds like a interesting concept. I too have had the idea of having a split in the current timeline.

It's okay. SF-O has been running really sluggishly for the past few weeks.

I have an idea, no sure if I already shared it or not.

What about a Cornerian Civil War? I mean, who or what else is there in Lylat left to fight? The Venomians have been the antagonists for three games straight. They dealt with Dinosaurs, then the virus-like Aparoids and fish and squid people from Venoms oceans.

The only logical path of the new game is to break ground begin anew and find a enemy possibly within the CDF ranks.

Whoever makes it, I'd like Krystal out of it.

I just dont think she added too much except for being Fox's girlfriend. I also think any attempt to flesh out her backstory would distract from the rest of the game. She felt sort of tacked on, so I think its best she is removed.

Another question to be asked though is what would next games plot be, apart from " some enemy is threatening lylat, kill him and his soldiers?"

:x remind me of the days of my youth, So much blood shed over comments like this one.

I like Krystal( dur, I think we all knew that), so to move quickly past it. What I really think is admirable about her is her potential. She seems to draw me in, i have an unquenchable desire to learn about her past, and to understand the source of her powers, the destruction of her planet, and what lead her to look for answers on Sauria. She does need some broadening, or stability rather in terms of her character, but so does the rest of the cast. If anything I kind of see her as the future of the series. She needs to step up and become a bigger character. Well not become the main character or anything, but her roles in adventures and assault seems to cast her as a side kick. Don't get me wrong, she was there, but hardly significant. Thats disappointing after only having a paragraph of dialogue or something out of her in adventures. I was really hoping for the next title to detail her. But as with all back stories and plots holes there wasn't any evaluating, or deepening of her character.

So that is what i'd like. Also, i want to see the bonds of the team stressed like in command. I want to see them pushed to their limits with each other. Now command did a horrible job with all of it, but it put what i find to be a creative cast of characters into an intense situation. It shakes us out of that feeling we get in 64 and assault, where the team is stressed to save the world yes, but there is little conflict with in. I find it to be a little dull. The closest we got were a few select moments with Falco telling fox to keep it in his pants.

Yeah I'd like to recall back to the olden days, but whats done is done. Krystal's going nowhere.

A more arcade sorta game which tests skill not storyline. Lylat Wars (SF64) was great because it was flowing and the storyline explained itself and wasn't overly complicated. So a new game like that. Maybe with a few more planets.

Hence, why I am making my own game. I'm sick of how they downgraded her, and made her a veritable piece of videogame furniture.... Falco is a sniper... and yet never uses his rifle?? And slippy is useless! I think the whole thing needs tweaks and fixes. Basically keep everything that's there, but stop trying to make it young children only... Make it available to a larger demographic. I'm not saying I want an 'M' rated game, just 'T'. It's be nice to see a serious SF game, instead of cheesy puns, movie quotes, and cookie-cutter gameplay.

EDIT:>> Same reason I no longer play Assassin's Creed. After a while, I get tired of the same old mechanics, game in and game out...

slippy is useless!

Slippy should be strictly the technician and weapon specialist. He just takes up the space of an Arwing seat.

Another reason for Miyu and Fay to be in the other games.

Personally I think they should keep Slippy as the mechanic and engineer for Star Fox, or leaves the team and becomes married, but still makes appearences as a resercher for the Corneria Army.

The timeline, plot, and characters need to be refind. With the re-release of Star Fox 64 on the 3DS we have a new generation of video gamers. This might be an ideal time to somewhat restart (not completely) the series and make the game and the characters more broader. After a new game or two, do a prequel with James McCloud and his need to start a mercenary company after leaving the Cornerian Army. You could pump all sorts of issues into that kind of story (I have several).

In any case there is work to be done, but I think it is still salvagable (I'd like to keep Krystal, but maybe push her down the story line and fix her background a little).

Regarding the characters, there's some stuff that obviously need to be changed. What I think in particular, is that Fox should be put a bit more of a personality, other than just being the stock hero pilot. Also they really messed up at Assault, made him sound kinda like a robot.

Also, sometimes Falco can display nothing else than being an utter moron jerkass. I don't think there's more to be changed, besides the all-around fact that none of the teammates do much to actually help the player.

Slippy IS NOT to be a flight teammate. Every time he appears in battlefield, he's a practical annoyance-overdosed Red Shirt. Maybe staying for the position of tech geek he has a potential use when(if) the SF pseudo-science-y stuff kicks in, but actually, not everyone needs to be in the spotlight.

Miyu and/or Fay are obligatorily led to take a participation in the story by taking his seat. Also there's the major problem of 'Should SF be kept as 4 craft squadron or add one more?' that may lead to only choose one of them.

 --animated_bar.gifanimated_bar.gifanimated_bar.gif--

My takes on Krystal below. You have been warned.

 --animated_bar.gifanimated_bar.gifanimated_bar.gif--

And as much as I think that Krystal could be a character with a lot of potential, there's interest conflict from others and from myself when it comes to keeping her at the main series. Contradicting? Heck yeah. I agree that there are some points that can be 'salvageable' (such as past events, like AJC noted, and what Morris is trying to do, etc) but here's the thing: Like people said before, her debut was supposed to add an actual character, but instead, the tight deadlines, plus the fact that nobody was thinking of SF as an potential deep-story game and that Rare was in charge of the thing AND that there wasn't even the least of effort put in it, the chain reaction reduced her to status of 'Ms. Fanservice' (As in 'well, you know') for furry perverts.

Quote: "Krystal from the Star Fox series is an obvious example [of the 'Ms. Fanservice' trope]. An exotic blue vixen who goes from an Amazonian look (wearing little more than a loincloth and a bikini top) in Star Fox Adventures to a skin-tight, high-heeled flightsuit [...] in Star Fox Assault. And then the base fractured." Unquote.

Application:

Krystal's base-breaking managed to hit the rock-bottom status of

Played For Drama: Krystal is pretty much the talk of the entire fandom. Although there are a lot of other interesting characters out there, everyone is talking about Krystal and when the writers ask what else they want or improve, everyone stays silent, realizing that they can't think of everyone else because of how much of a Base Breaker Krystal is. The character gets cut as an result of writer's block with many fandom warfare ongoing and cliffhangers remaining.

TL;DR: It's not possible to make a game featuring Krystal as protagonist and getting positive feedback from everyone, since she'd need to be re-introduced to the SF universe in a way different than "HAI GUISE IM THAT GIRL THAT GETS FROZEN BUT IM EYE CANDY LOOKIT ME"

I think that what may -with a very off chance- fix this can be a canon spin-off from the series. (I.E. A title dedicated NOT mainly to Krystal, but to the backstory of her homeworld's destruction instead) Of course there would be still some people bashing N for putting her in.

Now, unless Krystal herself objects from the in-game universe to the Big N guys in order to "not be subject to criminal abuse", I don't think you change her canon status. And she'd get beheaded upon saying that line.

Plus, the fanon status is even more unchangeable, because once again, well, you know. Still, not everything Krystal is weird pornographic shit...

Let me start by saying that this is my first post here and that this website is fantastic! Also that I am glad there are so many starfox fans like me!

Now, I don't have time to say much but here are some thoughts hovering around my head now:

They should bring up something similar to Assault, and ignore the very existence of Command (just extract the characters, I liked them), continue with where SFC left off.

Also, not to compare, but they should do a Twilight Princess style of game for Starfox, you know a little bit more serious (with some nice graphics like TP had in it's time) a little dark and with a really consistent story and characters that capture your feelings

And last but not least, let me play as Wolf hehe my favorite character of all time!

I think that would be a shame. Krystal looks great and her personality fits the game. I not that every time a woman comes into a game, it becomes the girlfriend. Krystal could just be a badass StarFox member, that happens to be female.

Krystal must stay imo, but not in the same way as in many of the Command endings. I like her best in Assault.

If Krystal is to stay, then I agree with the point of changing her. Drastically.

Assault Krystal was closest to being something than in any other game. Granted, she was in fact practical Lieutenant Obvious and wasn't of much use ether, but wasn't half of stupid than in the other stories.

The Command Krystal(s)? HECK NO and should stay as non existent. Granted; One of "them" actually has potential.

Kursed? She should have a good reason to turn into an evil emo, and getting kicked off a team and breaking up is NOT. Better reason; She doesn't get kicked or break up. Granted; someone *hint* very close to her is killed. Right in front of her. *Cue Romulan mode, followed by time travel and death pursuit of assassin, saving someone and killing the assassin right in front of her... SELF. PARADOX TIME!*

She doesn't turn evil emo at all. Granted, anti-hero is still acceptable. It's just my opinion, though.

My thoughts:

-STORY-

Takes place after the destruction of the apparoids with the team staying the same as in SF:Assault. I can't decide between Peppy retiring or not, but ROB is still in Great Fox, of course.

-GAMEPLAY-

Like assault - space (arwing) and ground (landmaster and on foot).

The player sees Fox 3rd person view, like in Assault and has radar, communication and other options displayed on the GamePad.

Here's the idea for the stuff on the GamePad: Health and Sheild and Bomb HUD display which can have horizontal bars, but vertical bars and bomb display stays on the TV along with the HIT score which is on both screens.

Messages are received on the GamePad, but you get a sound warning along with a display warning on the TV bottom. Radar is displayed only on the GamePad along with the stats of other characters.

Unlike before, the player should be able to contact the others by his own free will asking them for help, health or Slippy's shield display, or just if they are all fine.

Speech recognition would be nice so that the player can contact the characters with the given sentences/questions.

Fox (the player) should also be given more chances to make a choice, like at the begining when he should be able to decide who is in the Arwing, Landmaster, on foot, who is with who and so on.

-MORE-

More missions, challenges and online play definitely.

Maybe a Versus stage builder that uses the gamepad.

Computers in VS mode. More characters in versus mode.

Playing story mode as someone else.

The option to upgrade your weapons and rides in story mode would rock. Payment could be given at the end of a mission depending on the number of HITs or by completing an achievement/side mission.

I can't agree a 100% on that, but I think see what you mean. She needs a little more personality to add to the team. Though I think she's a great character, already since Adventures, I wouldn't mind seeing some more of her history. The plain text in the intro of Adventures was not so clear. But I think that if they made her a little more mysterious it would do fine too.

And Kursed? I like to forget all about that 'Krysanate'.
